Melissa Gira Grant and Chardine Taylor Stone join PTO to discuss police and male violence and the murder of Sarah Everard. We talked about the importance of not seeing Wayne Couzen's role as a police officer as merely incidental to the murder of Everard and we also talked about why carceral feminist approaches that seek to combat male violence through the police and the courts are doomed to fail.  We also talked about the social media reaction to the initial vigil for Sarah Everard on Clapham common and how the struggle against police violence and violence against women in general requires the building of a mass movement of collective struggle that cuts across different identities.

On episode 35 of The Electronic Intifada Podcast, Nora, Asa and our colleague Tamara Nassar join Lara Elborno and Michael Schirtzer of the Palestine Pod to talk about the first few days of the US-backed Israeli attacks on Gaza.

“An occupied people has a right to engage in armed resistance against a foreign occupation. That’s it. Period,” says Elborno. “There is no right for a colonial power to engage in a merciless assault against a civilian population that it cages.”

Since we recorded this episode, Lara’s relative, Hassan Elborno, was killed by Israeli bombing in the Gaza Strip. He was a farmer working on land near the eastern boundary line with Israel.


Later on in the program, Nora and Asa talk to Joharah Baker, a journalist and translator based in the Old City of Jerusalem, who discusses the last month of Israeli settler pogroms and attempts to expel Palestinians from the nearby neighborhood of Sheikh Jarrah.
Baker also talks about the complicity of Joe Biden and US lawmakers in aiding and abetting Israel’s war crimes.

“Anyone who looks to Biden as any kind of game-changer … sorry, they’re just delusional,” she says. “The only way that policy will change is through funding. It has to be money, there’s really no other way. But I don’t see that happening yet. But I think that there is a movement … people are the ones who will make those changes.”

For her first album releases as a soloist, nomadic Australian cellist and composer Judith Hamann presents two collections of her sonic inquiries into shaking and humming. Her LP, Shaking Studies, is a collection of iterative cello performance that foregrounds shaking as a generative subject. In addition to an arsenal of techniques for registrable shaking, Hamann’s conception of the term emphasizes micro and macro pulsing, including tremors, vibrato, wolf tones, and complex partial activity. Hamann begins with a sphygmological reading of the pulse of her cello, inciting it to shake audibly and visually as a symbiotic basis for determining the rate of her own left hand’s tremor and consequent direction of resonant frequencies. Following a thorough harmonic investigation of her shaking practice in two parts, she directs us to look outwards, combining beating chordal structures with electronics and recordings of real world shaking. From inner pulse to more macrocosmic quaking, Hamann’s alternative conception of shaking rejects measurement and regularity, order and control, instead alluding to a more responsive and intuitive mode of convulsive sounding.

Judith Hamann undertook her doctoral studies with renowned cellist Charles Curtis, with whom she is currently engaged in a discourse based project, ‘Materialities of Realisation.’ She has additionally demonstrated a superlative capacity for improvisation and engagement with sonic arts through work with artists Dennis Cooper, Éliane Radigue, Áine O’Dwyer, Ilan Volkov, Toshimaru Nakamura, La Monte Young and Marian Zazeela, Golden Fur, Jessika Kenney, Anna Homler, Yvette Janine Jackson, and Lori Goldston, among others. Her recorded appearances include Tashi Wada’s Duets, Graham Lambkin’s Community, Alvin Lucier’s Illuminated By The Moon, and Gossamers, with Rosalind Hall.
