The existence of dark matter is inferred from its gravitational effects on visible matter, such as galaxies and galaxy clusters. It exerts a gravitational force that is strong enough to influence the motion of stars and galaxies, but since it doesn't interact via electromagnetism, it doesn't emit, absorb, or reflect light. This lack of interaction with light is why it remains elusive and invisible.
