These insect substrate-borne vibrations were recorded with laser doppler vibrometers from local plants in a wet meadow located in Gais, Switzerland. Laser vibrometers are able to detect the vibrational signals emitted by insects that travel through the surface of the plants in the meadow. Only two local insects could be identified by the signals they produced, and those were Aphropora major (a froghopper) and Sorhoanus assimilis (a leafhopper). Over 20 different insect signals were documented during the field study. Although their identity can not be revealed yet, we hypothesise that many of these signals belong to the Auchenorryncha suborder of insects, specialised in vibrational communication. The signals, emanating from the vibrational interactions within the local vibroscape, were extracted from 150 hours of recorded material collected over the course of August 8, 9, and 10, 2023. The research of vibroscapes in nature is rather recent and this was the first time that an alpine meadow was recorded.

Audio Intervention at City Sonic Places Symposium

A census helps governments form policies, businesses target customers, charities fight for social welfare needs and academics and artists find areas of scrutiny. But the onslaught of cuts affecting people with disabilities, families of various configurations and people wanting to leave the renting market leaves the distinct feeling that something might be getting lost in translation. The numbers are either wrong or being ignored, so in an attempt to create a moment of solace, Sense Us takes the binary data produced by census data of the SE1 6SB area (gender, ethnicity, passport held, employment status) and injects ‘living statistics’ comprising voices and sounds from the community and city environment. Sense Us is a pre-recorded piece bringing together personal narratives, statistics, readings of policies and field-recordings of the area. This simple combination, including the live sounds present when hearing the piece, will counter and confirm the characters behind and within the numbers in this playful sound piece.

'Listening and not listening to voices: Interrogating the prejudicial foundations of the sound arts canon' is an peer reviewed audio paper first published by Seismograf (https://seismograf.org)in `November 2017. It was based on a keynote lecture given at 'Sound Art Matters', a conference held in Aarhus, Denmark in 2016.

Abstract
We live in sound, it is all around us. We are implicated in the social relationships and ideologies that we hear reflected back to us. Sound art offers the chance to critique the world that we hear, and to produce new and different possibilities. Are sound artists taking up the challenge of offering new ways of knowing or changing the world, and does this need new ways of listening and understanding? Can sound art act as a tool for radical change by ‘de-conditioning’ our listening and helping us cross linguistic, cultural, geographic, ethnic, gendered, specied and sexual prejudicial borders? This audio paper will consider how new listenings might lead to a richer, more inclusive sound art, that can embrace and celebrate difference.
