Sacromonte & AFK - Stromboli

In this edition we welcome back Anne Chris Bakker, a musician and composer from the Netherlands. Some may recall 2021’s collaboration with Andrew Heath, with their album ‘How To Breathe Like A Stone’ and we are pleased to be able to present this solo record, ‘A Sketch in Leaving’.

Anne Chris Bakker’s music makes use of electro acoustic sound sources, to create minimal and experimental ambient music. Releases have been made available through labels such as White Paddy Mountain, Dronarivm and Unknown Tone, as well as a further collaboration with Andrew Heath on Rusted Tone Recordings. There were also recordings as Kleefstra|Bakker|Kleefstra on labels which include Low Point.

Bakker typically starts with small compositions created with guitar and for A Sketch in Leaving, a new approach was forged by using a piano and samples so that a new experimental path could be explored. Inspiration has been drawn from long walks in the Norwegian mountains and this album is in part based upon these experiences. The immense landscape, battered and bruised by the elements represents change and loss, as well as the emergence of freshly formed details. The titles of the album are mainly of places, people and concepts all set to the vast Scandinavian landscape, which is placed as a focal point within the packaging artwork.

Music is designed to evoke such feelings and sensations in order to transport the listener to a new dimension: from a timbre perspective, it is a meeting between organic and electronic elements. The line between the two worlds becomes blurred and this allows the creation of a hybrid that exploits the potential of both natural and technological realities: abstract sounds that give voice to the magical and dreamlike aspects of images are contrasted with more refined and relaxed sounds where textures, colors and electronic rhythms are added, by reinterpreting elements of nature in a modern key.

This is an improvisation of mine using a soft felt strip between hammers and strings. This new piano model of our Una Corda series goes to Japan this week and will be presented in concert at the Fuji Festival on July 23! If you enjoy it, feel free to download this track in wave format.

Ben Lukas Boysen has made a career out of transforming unusual sounds into compelling music. His first electronic compositions at 18 were experiments with samplers and tape loops leading to an album in 2003 and the subsequent foundation of his own Berlin studio. Since, he has produced multiple albums (many under the alias HECQ), and led numerous workshops on composition and sound aesthetics, as well as creating custom sound design for films, commercials, video games and installations. Boysen’s first film score for „Restive" premiered in 2011, followed by his debut album under his own name in 2013, and the award-winning score for the Sony Playstation game, Everything, in 2016 as well as Amazon series „BEAT“ in 2018 and the score for the  film adaptation of best seller „The Collini Case“ in 2019.

Retrograde Mixtape V

Italian composer and pianist Luca Longobardi represents the generation of classically trained musicians who incorporate the language of contemporary electronic music into their pieces, which are furthermore strongly connected to the multimedia arts. Born in 1976, Longobardi studied classical music in Italy and New York and went on to earn his doctorate in digital audio restoration in Rome in 2011. His works reveal a strong interaction between classical and contemporary music. The experience he has gained as a theatre musician has increased his interest in the relationship between sounds and spectacle; he has composed music for ballets and films and accompanied installations and experimental art productions (Atelier de Lumières - Paris, Carrières de Lumières - Baux-de-Provence, Kunstkraftwerk - Leipzig). At his multimedia performances and in his recordings, strongly experimental electronic music meets pure, ethereal and simple-seeming piano playing that nevertheless relays deep emotions.
