The last time we saw Massi he was playing an in-store event for us here at Phonica and the crowd absolutely loved it! We’ve always been big fans of him here at the shop for his outstanding productions which have landed on labels such as ‘Live At Robert Johnson’ on ‘Rush Hour’ but Massi has been a DJ much longer than he’s been a producer and the vast amount of experience he has acquired playing at some of the best underground spots around the world simply can’t be ignored. Recently he’s also been welcomed into the Ostgut family with a spot on their agency’s roster and things seem to only be getting better. Massi describes his style behind the decks as an eclectic mix of House, Disco, Electro and Techno. His selection always pays homage to the past while simultaneously pushing the boundaries of dance music into the future. He also reflects this ethos in the studio where he experiments with new techniques on old analogue synthesizers. With a background in Dance and Choreography, Massimiliano definitely knows what it takes to get you moving and we couldn’t be happier with the extended and eclectic mix he prepared for us today.

Exclusive The Magic Ray 'The Tuning of the Road (Simple Symmetry Remix)

Moscow based brothers Sasha and Sergey alias Simple Symmetry have been responsible for some of 2017's musical special treats. The basement inspired duo took on responsibility to remix Adam Port's 'I Never Wear Black' and even get deeper with releases on Disco Halal, Multi Culti, Correspondant and now Dischi Autunno. Latter is run by French DJane Jennifer Cardini and Noura Labbani and just had its EP, The Tuning of the Road by The Magic Ray, released. Simple Symmetry reworked the original, an Indie-Rock influenced song, and added their slightly discoish inspired vibe making the track both: more suitable for the dance floors and paying tribute to a multilayered approach in sounds.

Montreal's Phoebé Guillemot plays records as DJ FATi and is an album specialist as RAMZi. Just this month her fifth full length, Pèze-Piton, dropped and was another beautifully unusual mix of tropical house, dub, future jazz and experimental grooves that are impossibly loose and inescapably infectious. Releasing on cult labels like Mood Hut, 1080p and Rvng Into., her leftfield sounds feel at once completely alien yet also wholly organic and earthy. They are jumbled collages of trippy vocal sounds, squelchy synths and tumbling drums that real new details with each listen. 

Playing live but also DJing under the DJ Fati alias, when in selector mode her sound is just as fresh. This mix is a worldly hour of laid-back beats, jungle house and new age grooves that ooze exotic flavours and tropical vibes. It goes through blissed out and baeachy passages of instrumentals, jumbled drums and shimmering synths that paint a perfect picture of a some imaginary paradise where all there is to do is soak up the sun and dance.

Radio Cómeme - The Dreamcatcher 25 by Borusiade

Techno is Gunnar Haslam’s starting point, but the New Yorker often strays way off grid once he gets started. Mostly that happens when in album mode, where he weaves weird melodies into beatless tracks that are laden with drones. When turning out 12”s for the likes of L.I.E.S., Delsin and Argot, he favours a chilly, slithering sound, and as Romans with Tin Man he cooks up elegantly mournful techno that sends you deep into your own mind. The former psychiatrist also plays live with Mike Servito and Justin Cudmore as Hot Mix, so someone who is always evolving and exploring new territory. 

It’s the same story on his mix for us, which wastes no time in dropping you straight into a bendy, supple techno groove that soon begins to change shape and sound. Along the course of 70 minutes, it becomes skeletal and stripped back, percussive and spaced out then hurried and funky. A pulsing drum line underpins everything while the real drama unfolds in a burrowing top line or mind melting acid squiggle up top. In condensing many different forms of techno into this one mix, Haslam masterfully showcases the breadth of his fascinating sound.

Already a well-established presence on the outlandish fringes of experimental, alternative and dance music, celebrated Israeli duo Red Axes make a surprise left-turn onto Phantasy with a three-track 12”, ‘Sipoor’. Unsurprisingly, the results are as pleasingly out-there as the occasion requires. 

Following on from last year’s self-released LP, ‘The Beach Goths’, ‘Sipoor’ immediately announces the Axes’ uncompromising return to the front and centre of the dancefloor with the raw, provocative ‘Bad Time Story’. Brazen, brash acid triggers this particular tale, as Red Axes briskly modulate their way through a ruff, tuff but never less than musical landscape of 303s and 808s. 

‘Sipoor’ takes a more gradual approach to building offbeat rave tension, featuring an unknown male using his native tongue to request some kind of house, some kind of techno and some sort of release. His wish (and we hope, yours) is the Axes’ command, as the music goes deep before seamlessly unfolds around a throbbing bassline and a playful, familiar keyboard sample, beckoning feet to the dancefloor and perhaps tongues ever so slightly to cheeks. 

Concluding the 12”, ‘Teroof’ takes each of Red Axes’ signature ingredients - deeply rhythmic EBM-inspired drums, spiralling electronics, unapologetically odd vocal distortions - and reconstructs them amid what sounds like the Monaco Grand Prix, as high-velocity motors speed past the soundscape, kicking up some serious dust.

Our baby brother @theburrellconnection closing off the Craigie Knowes room in Berlin’s Wilde Renate from 8am a couple of weeks ago. Despite the recording cutting out after an hour and a half he went right through until gone 12. Big thanks to all the dancers that stayed out until the very end. The last 2 tracks were HN03 -  Doughnut Dollies and Eleven Pond - Watching Trees. 

As this is a live recording cut right from the early hours expect a few bumps, scuffs and crowd noises throughout, but we think it paints the vibe perfectly of what was one of the best parties we’ve had the pleasure to promote and play at. Love to the Lezure, Move Forward and Renate crews. See you next time.

Melbourne’s Roza Terenzi is unafraid to venture into uncharted territory of rave-infused electro, house and techno. Experimenting with bleeps and breaks from alien worlds and off-kilter beats, Terenzi’s productions are prime territory for warehouse rhythms that oscillate between the futuristic and the nostalgic. Her DJ sets have the same sleek weirdness, mixing styles and tempos in a way that brings a unique energy to dancefloors. Listening to a Terenzi set offers a respite from reality, a welcome reminder to stop taking ourselves so damn seriously and get lost in the music.

Katie Campbell adopted the Roza Terenzi moniker in 2016, ushering in a new era for the Perth-born DJ/producer. In the short time since, Terenzi’s career has taken off exponentially. A slew of impressive releases on Kalahari Oyster Cult, Pelvis Records, Good Company, Voyage Recordings and her own Planet Euphorique- a collaboration with D. Tiffany, have established Terenzi as a formidable force. It comes as no surprise that Terenzi has since been in hot demand both locally and internationally: her busy touring schedule has recently taken her on a 3-month tour of Europe and North America. Montrealers, she is playing tonight at Datcha with D. Tiffany :)

This week we welcome M.ono to the podcast, a DJ and producer based in Leipzig and one of the founders of Rose Records which was formed in 2011.

Inspired by the House, Drum & Bass and Hip Hop sounds of the late 90s and early 2000s. His deep love and appreciation for music across all genres and eras are an inspiration for his productions which can be seen as sunny, emotional house tracks often with big piano chords and funky swinging basslines.

In collaboration with his label partner Luvless he has produced tracks for labels like Kolour Recordings, Dirt Crew Recordings, Ors, Ourselves, Traxx Underground, Tsuba and Rose Records under the synonym of ‘M.ono & Luvless’.

Outwith  Rose Records, he's released music on labels like Detroit Swindle's Heist Recordings, Razor N Tape, Dirt Crew, Suol & Night Grooves.

My Essential Mix for BBC Radio 1, originally aired Aug 2018. Here it is without the radio drops.

I’m usually not much of a preplanned mix person, I massively prefer playing to a crowd and interacting with the atmosphere. Combine that with the extremely not insignificant fact that this is one of the most important and longest running mix series around, this was quite a challenge!

I spent a long time gathering these 40 songs and playing with the arrangement (even made a couple new edits). I included songs that have been staples in my sets, plus old favorites from before I was a DJ. Eternal shouts to Nathan Micay, Aurora Halal, Overmono, E-Talking and Koehler for letting me include your dope as hell unreleased new music (plus two unreleased songs from myself). 

The last song is by Oakland band Them Are Us Too and this mix is dedicated to those who lost their lives in a diy music space a year and a half ago. Your music and love lives on. FUCK technocrat capitalist greed in the bay. One of Ghost Ship’s spiritual predecessors, Ghost Town in Oakland, was one of the first gigs I ever played, back in 2011 right around the time when I was realizing that I loved making music and DJing. 

If someone told me then that I’d eventually make an Essential Mix and be touring around the world, I’d be incredulously curious to see just how that would unfold. It’s been wild. Thank you to everyone who has listened and danced with me since then.

Born somewhere in Yorkshire in the late 80s Bleep Techno was one of the first truly British sounding sub-genres of House and Techno. Typified by heavy dub-reggae inspired basslines, haunting choral vocals and samples that bleeped, clonked and clanged their way along, Bleep Techno has remained one of the more obscure strains of dance music. Bleep went on to inspire producers around the world (some of that can be found in this mix) and still sounds like the future despite its age.

This mix is dedicated to Rob Gordon and respect goes out to Sheffield, Leeds and Bradford.

Tribal sounds within House music rose to prominence in the early 90s and permeated through many different sub-genres, from the pumped up high energy of New York Tribal from the likes of Danny Tenaglia and Junior Vasquez to the Tribal Techno of mysterious dutch trio Pyschick Warriors ov Gaia. Tribal House was comparatively short lived in terms of popularity as the sounds saturated clubs over a few years and quickly fell out of fashion, however the traits of the Tribal sound continue to stick around and provide the backbone for many new productions.

I love opening sets.

Opening sets allow the DJ to create the atmosphere for an entire night and are a true challenge (and lost artform) for those DJs, who travel from town to town every weekend playing 2 hour peak-time sets.

Opening sets allow to play tracks (and / or songs) that you usually don't hear in a club when you arrive after a certain time due to the DJs fear of losing people off the dancefloor (so what? :-D ).

For this and other reasons I dedicate this mix to those who tend to come (too) late and to those who come early at the same time and send a huge "THANK YOU!" to those who were participating LIVE in this session. 
Also to those who contributed a few "WHOOHOOOs" in silent passages - one of the many nice things you only get when playing vinyl :)

It was a pleasure seeing the packed floor bouncing...early, did I mention that? 

There is this line in the song "Hello" by The Beloved:

    All you late-comers, just step on board.
    I'm happy, glad you came.
