Performance of the Gregorian Salve Regina coupled with Josquin DesPres's cantus firmus motet in my own performance edition. 

The motet is a marvel of musical craftsmanship: not only does it utilize the Gregorian chant in its entirety in the Alto voice, but its structure is a strict double canon throughout: Soprano/Alto sing one strict canon; Tenor/Bass sing a different strict canon. Performed by Voces Novae et Antiquae under my direction May 16, 2004, in Philadelphia, PA.

The *Salve Regina,* also known as the "Hail Holy Queen," is a Marian hymn and one of four Marian antiphons sung at different seasons within the Christian liturgical calendar of the Roman Catholic Church. The *Salve Regina* is traditionally sung at Compline in the time from the Saturday before Trinity Sunday until the Friday before the first Sunday of Advent. "Hail Holy Queen" is also the final prayer of the Rosary.

The work was composed during the Middle Ages by German monk Hermann of Reichenau and originally appeared in Latin, the prevalent language of Western Christianity until modern times.

In these troubled and difficult times, it is important to anchor oneself even more deeply in God's love and protection. All human efforts to live in security and all attempts to find solutions in the most difficult crises (however justified they may be) are not capable of granting man a definite and stable security. 

In this video, we sing the Tractus (a chant sung in penitential seasons before the Gospel) which puts melody to Psalm 91 in Latin. We hope that the serene flow of this sacred chant will touch souls deeply, offering them God's comfort, whether in times of epidemic, war or whatever situation threatens us. 

According to the ancient monastic tradition, the Catholic Church intones this psalm at Compline (prayer at the end of the day). However, it goes back much further, to the time of the Old Covenant. Even in our own day it can convey to us the comfort that only the Heavenly Father is able to give us: to dwell in the shelter of the Most High in the midst of all tribulations.

De muziek van Arvo Pärt heeft sinds de oprichting van Kwintessens- nu vijf jaar geleden- een
grote rol gespeeld in de ontwikkeling van het koor. Dat deze componist op 11 september 2010
zijn 75e verjaardag vierde, was voor ons een reden om op die datum ons eerste concert
te plannen met uitsluitend muziek van Arvo Pärt.
Pärts muziek is van een prachtige eenvoud. Door 'ongeoefende' oren gewaardeerd en door 
muziekkenners gekarakteriseerd als muzikale ijssculpturen van een haast pijnlijke schoonheid.
