star 69 - Hard Act To Follow

Bastard Jazz is happy to give a first look at mainstay Japanese producers Aru-2 & Kzyboost's  full length album "Hot Pants" (August 13) with a special 7" showcasing a couple of favorites from the album. On the A side is "Shooby Dooby", a slice of future funk with a bubbling analog synth bassline and Aru-2's signature talkbox vocals, while on the B-Side "Boost Step" takes things a little more downtempo into instrumental hip-hop territory, still rife with funk vibes, and synth solos. 

Aru-2 and Kzyboost are both Tokyo-based producers, known for their work in the Japanese underground hip hop scene. Aru-2 got his start producing for prominent J-hip hop artists like ISSUGI, SENNINSHO, Tamaki Roy, and KID FRESINO. His first EP, “Arµ-2,” arrived in 2013, and was featured in OkayPlayer, while the collaborative album “TANHÂ,” with Lee (asano+ryuhei) came out in 2014 and was critically acclaimed by Pitchfork. Kzyboost specialises in the talk-box and is one of the best known talk-box artists in Japan. He’s released two studio albums, “Callin’ U” (2019), and “Keep Smoovin’” (2020, fusing West Coast hip hip, and 90s R&B and soul. The two artists bonded over their shared love of music through sessions at Aru-2’s home studio, resulting in the upcoming collaboration.

“Shooby Dooby / Boost Step” is due out on Brooklyn’s Bastard Jazz Recordings in July, ahead of the duo’s debut LP “Hot Pants” in August.

I have wanted to record this mix for a very long time! Precisely that one groovy, funky rap that makes you smile and dance! That's what the real Hip-Hop is about! This is what the real Old School is! Especially for everyone who says Old School to R&B and Rap of the early 2000s, Golden Age Hip-Hop of the 90s, for all those "DJs" who say - "Eminem, Lil John, 50 Cent, Dmx is old school") )
Okay, if those who are under 30 say this, but when you are over 30, the question arises - at what age did you start listening to rap? And what kind of rap did you start listening to? If it was rap of the 90's, it does not mean that now it has become old school)) except for you personally), but in the world this era has a different name, for example, gangsta rap or golden age hip hop, or just 90's hip -hop, but not old school! Because Old School Rap will always be the 80's!
   In this mix, I have collected both famous hits from the 80's and some rare, but nevertheless cool tracks! You know about Disco Funk?, and now you also know about Disco Rap! You can clearly trace this disco line in the mix and understand that the first recorded Rap was exactly Disco Rap or Boogie Rap! Recitative to both disco breaks and bass boogie grooves! 
  This mix I dedicated to celebration of 49 years of Hip-Hop culture that will live forever, and thanks to which many of us found ourselves and became who we are today! Despite the hard times, wars and injustice, I wish you all Peace and Love! This is my message to you!

Here's some newness from the lab that I wanted to share. A reworking/remix of the classic song: The Jets - "Crush on You". A looong time ago I heard a remix of this song, not knowing who the original song was by (I was madd young at the time). After coming across hearing the original song, I felt compelled to create a small remix. I hope you all can dig. If not, it's all good. By the way, the girl in the pic is the keyboard player (Kathi) in the video. I felt like she needed to be seen since she was in the back. =)
