I’m playing Renaissance Festival this Sunday and I am PUMPED.
When my regular bass player wasn't available, I decided to pivot and bring a bit of electronic bass into the mix. I met Koil Staticat at a party, told him I had four live players lined up and needed a wubs guy, and he said, “I'll be your wubs guy.” Excellent.
Much respect to Koil, but it turned out we had quite different ideas about what that collaboration was going to look like. I handed over my Ableton sessions thinking: bass, maybe some extra percussion, subtle electronic layers woven through a primarily live sound.
Koil put my sessions, arrangements and parts through Suno.
Had anyone asked me beforehand whether I was cool with putting my musical IP through Suno, the answer would have been an unequivocal NO. I have significant ethical, practical and sonic issues with generative AI in music. I think AI can be an incredible tool, but I also think its use desperately needs meaningful regulation, transparency and consent around artists' work.
That said, this was my favourite of the strange little alternate-universe versions of my music that came out of the experiment.
This is Tell Me What You Want — Draft 1: the Suno version.
The song itself is mine, and I've already taken it somewhere completely different: I flipped it with the excellent Contra & Saturna track What Can I Do (the Abstract Sonance remix), which has been living on my SoundCloud for a bit.
But the version I'm REALLY excited about?
Sunday.
Because I've pivoted again and now have an absolute A-team of live players joining me, and I couldn't be happier to be repping for TEAM HUMAN.
Contemporary jazz meets sound system culture: dubstep, hip-hop and jungle rhythms, live voice, instruments, bass and wubs.
This is where I actually want this music to live.
Can't wait to drop it with my band of mofos on Sunday.

So much to do... but first, what should I do?
Just drink a cup of coffee
and figure out the rest after that.

Sarah McDonald evokes cool smoky jazz club atmosphere with expressive melifluous phrasing contrasting with rhythmic dexterity.  She is a singer who has been as influenced by horn players and drummers as she has by the great vocalists. Having delved deeply into music, she draws from the greats of the history of jazz, blues and soul and selects choice standards, along with original, contemporary and more esoteric repertoire that she infuses with a soulful authenticity.

She has had a wealth of experience performing original music in various guises, playing in a range of contemporary original bands, world music ensembles and playing music for circus, theatre and film.
