Once Was Enough is Lucent Lake's second release of 2025. Originally recorded on a sleepless night back in 2023, the song follows the same piano focused style of Silent Figures. Built on a simple repeating structure and melody in F major, the floating synth textures support a reflective and meditative tone.

Once Was Enough

'Great Expectations' is the third single released by Lucent Lake in 2025. Piano-focused but lighter in tone than previous songs from this year, it represents a distillation of two disparate influences.

One: the work of brilliant composer (and fellow Angeleno) John Carroll Kirby, who released a beautiful and reflective piano-centered album 'Conflict' in 2020.

Two: a Japanese TV show drama on Netflix from 2023, 'The Makanai: Cooking for the Maiko House' which traces the heartfelt story of two young women finding their footing and friendship in a Geisha house.

Somewhere over the last few years, the melodies, beauty, and stories melded together and inspired 'Great Expectations'. Like a scale lightly descending (and in no hurry), the song is a peaceful meditation on hope.

Great Expectations

'Still Not Awake' is the fourth piano focused song released in 2025 and carries forward a meditative and hopeful feeling. It was written on April 16, 2023 - the day legendary jazz pianist Ahmad Jamal passed away. The song sprouted from an inspired afternoon session following a reflective and sunny neighborhood walk spent digesting Jamal's seminal 'At the Pershing: But Not For Me'.

The original demo consisted of a playful and looping F# arpeggio with improvised melodies floating in across one take. Refining it further it found a more hopeful tone with chords adding some additional emotional weight. Rest in peace, Mr. Jamal.

Still Not Awake

The 5th release of 2025, 'Somewhere Else' charts a sombre yet hopeful mood in G major. It was written and recorded more recently (in May 2025) and quickly shaped into something simple and reflective; the melody improvised in a few takes. The meditative structure provides the space to breathe.

Somewhere Else

'Broken Approach' is the 6th piano release this year and like previous songs, a pensive reflection on the dark and tragic state of the world in 2025. The song starts with a repeating arpeggio in Eb major that creates a meditative, metronome like rhythm. The melody was improvised in several takes. The languid synth pads create a soft counterpoint to the sharp quality of the melody.

Broken Approach

"Before The Fall" was written in the beginning of August 2025. The chords dart around anxiously, quietly. The melody leads in a delicate but persistent way. Like a tightrope walker swaying slightly before a dismount, so it goes in the precarious state of life in America in the Fall of 2025.

Before The Fall

"From Far Away" was first written on a mid-August evening in 2025 and completed in November. The sparseness of the melody and somber chords create a forlorn feeling... like a vague memory; just out of reach and observed from a distance.
