A lunar phase or Moon phase is the apparent shape of the Moon's directly sunlit portion as viewed from the Earth (because the Moon is tidally locked with the Earth, the same hemisphere is always facing the Earth). In common usage, the four major phases are the new moon, the first quarter, the full moon, and the last quarter; the four minor phases are waxing crescent, waxing gibbous, waning gibbous, and waning crescent. A lunar month is the time between successive recurrences of the same phase: due to the eccentricity of the Moon's orbit, this duration is not perfectly constant but averages about 29.5 days.

The appearance of the Moon (its phase) gradually changes over a lunar month as the relative orbital positions of the Moon around Earth, and Earth around the Sun, shift. The visible side of the Moon is sunlit to varying extents, depending on the position of the Moon in its orbit, with the sunlit portion varying from 0% (at new moon) to nearly 100% (at full moon)

48 - Dreamlike Journey

Rail Dynamics is a multi-movement work for string trio and fixed media inspired by a defunct rail  line outside of Santa Fe, New Mexico. Across its ten movements, Rail Dynamics explores the  soundscapes of the northern New Mexican landscape while navigating the cultural and environmental  impact of the rail in the Galisteo Basin, ultimately meditating on the slow deterioration of the  rail line and the surrounding landscape's gradual reclamation of its previously inhabited spaces.  Intertwined among these explorations are images surrounding a car accident I was in as a child that  involved a collision with a train. The accident had long faded into distant memory when I first  encountered the abandoned rail while exploring the desert, but it still haunted me on a daily basis  (survivor's guilt, nightmares, seemingly random associations). Being by the rail and in the deep quiet  that characterizes so much of northern New Mexico's landscapes, however, helped me to recontextualize  my experience and facilitated my recovery; the slow dissolution of the rail into the high desert soil seemed  to mirror the gradual vanishing of the scars on my face, and in a strange way I found a deep kinship with  the basin, what remained of the rail, and their deeply nuanced relationship.  This piece is dedicated to my father, who, for weeks following the accident, would fall asleep at the foot  of my hospital bed without mattress or pillow so I would not be there by myself.  ( Rail Dynamics takes its name from a ground-breaking set of mid-century field recordings of  locomotives in New York, championed today by the Smithsonian Folkways. This work was premiered at The TANK Center for the Sonic Arts on September 22, 2024. Loo(p)cy is a project by Italian multi-instrumentalist Lucia Caiazza. She began studying classical piano at the age of eight, later shifting her focus to electric guitar, becoming a rock guitarist and singer during her teenage years and beyond. Over the years, she has released nine albums, with her style evolving along the way. In Loo(p)cy's music, one can hear echoes of classical, blues, folk, and rock influences, all woven together within enchanting soundscapes.
