Sound fragments, field recordings, radio transmissions and the secret soundscapes of machines and building structures are taken apart and reconfigured. The work presented here is the result of such explorations into the sonics of analogue and digital materiality. The music takes the listener on audiological expeditions into uncharted territories. I am a sound recordist/artist/designer currently producing audio-montages and compositions that explore the intersection of architecture, psychoacoustics, social-dynamics and place. My works are constructed primarily from un-mixed and un-edited environmental sound recordings, which I capture using a mixture of straight, extended and oblique recording techniques – probing the various unheard material realities, angles and perspectives of a given sound event, as well as providing a tactile space that has surface, texture and reflection, whereby the listener is sensitised to hearing as if it were touch. Through employing a technologically limited (recording focused) work methodology, I am driven to find inventive recording techniques that re-contextualise my surroundings as well as inspire fresh and idiosyncratic compositional approaches pertinent to the places, situations and events I encounter.

Phil Julian is a UK based composer and improviser active since the late 1990s principally working with modular electronic devices and computers.

Audio works by Julian (and under the Cheapmachines alias) have been published on labels including Entr’acte, Banned Production, The Tapeworm, Harbinger Sound, Confront Recordings, Staalplaat (Open Circuit imprint), con-v, Beartown Records as well as numerous compilation appearances.

He also runs the Authorised Version label.

Julian has collaborated on remixes, recordings and performances with Tomas Korber, Michael Renkel, Jason Kahn, Daniel Jones, Kostis Kilymis, Tom Mudd, Angharad Davies, John Macedo, Dominic Lash, Dimitra Lazaridou-Chatzigoga, Dale Cornish, Ryan Jordan, Maurizio Bianchi, Nihilist Assault Group, The New Blockaders and GX Jupitter-Larsen of The Haters as well as being a member of the improvised drone ensemble Signals with Mark Beazley and Chris Gowers and playing as part of Mark Wastell’s improvising group The Seen.

Shortwave Collective is an international, feminist artist group established in May 2020. We meet regularly to consider feminist concerns within amateur radio and experiment with the radio spectrum as artistic material. We share resources, consider DIY approaches and inclusive structures.
