Since its formation in 2001, Novalima has been breaking down boundaries, uniting seemingly irreconcilable genres, communities and generations to create an inspiring movement that has revolutionized the music scene in their native Peru. Founded by four friends from Lima with a shared passion for both traditional Afro-Peruvian music and modern DJ culture, Novalima searches for the common ground between past and future, between tradition and innovation. 

Throughout 2014 Novalima has been recording what will be their new album, Planetario to be released in June 16 on Wonderwheel Recordings. The name of the album reflects its worldwide feel as it has been recorded in various locations around the globe including collaborations by top local and international musicians. A few of these recording sessions were done in Colombia which has given some of the new tracks an Afro-Colombian vibe and takes their exploration of deep Afro rhythms into the future. Collaborations include Sidestepper vocalist Eka Muñoz, as well as members from La-33, Pernett and La Mamba Negra, plus other worldwide artists such as Marc de Clive Lowe (UK/NZ), Panko from Ojos de Brujo, Kumar (Cuban rapper based in BCN). Remixes from the album are already underway with Bomba Stereo, Quantic and Nickodemus already lined up.

The debut single from the album, “Como Yo” (to be released May 19th on digital single and 7” vinyl) pays homage to a fallen bandmember and troubadour named Mangue, telling his story moving from town to town and venue to venue playing music, remembering and keeping something from each place he visited. Upon his passing, his only wish would be that there would be no tears and that all his friends and family would enjoy life as he did while he was on this planet…living it to the fullest. The deep, heartfelt lyrics honoring their friend are underscored by an appropriately celebratory musical vibe with rolling percussion, twinkling synths, and a sing-song chant chorus reflecting the spirit of the song.: “Gozen La Vida Como Yo” -  Enjoy life, like me (Like I do)

Novalima has garnered critical acclaim from mainstream and underground media alike, a Latin Grammy nomination for Best Alternative Album, and a featured spot in cult filmmaker Robert Rodriguez’s hit Mexploitation movie Machete. While their sound is futuristic and cutting-edge, the roots of Novalima’s music stretch back hundreds of years to the times of slavery and Spanish colonial rule. In a far-too familiar tale, African slaves were brought to Peru as early as the 1500s until the middle of the 19th Century, establishing an outpost of African culture in South America. Over the years, the soul and rhythms of Africa blended with the melodies and instruments of Europe and the Andes. The result is rich musical repertoire that has existed for generations on the periphery of Peruvian popular culture.

Lo Fi Odyssey marks MODE's first official release. The track is an entirely original piece and grew from the rolling rhodes chord progression, stumbled across whilst jamming late at night. Having laid down the rhodes with a driving beat and syncopated bass line the rest of the track is constructed layer upon layer achieving a full, rich texture all wrapped up in analogue warmth.

The title is derived from two vital elements of the track. The harmonic foundation lies in the distorted 'Lo Fi Rhodes' whilst the hypnotic solo melody is performed on a 1970s vintage  'Arp Odyssey' synthesiser. Lo Fi Odyssey is the amalgamation of the two. This title felt even more appropriate when considering the links between the track and the story of 'The Odyssey'. The structure and compositional technique of 'theme and development' reflect those implemented in Homer's epic poem. The idea of the track being a journey is highlighted further by the sampling of a train passing by the window of the flat in Hackney where it was written.

Melbourne’s own @LouKarsh steps up for @x-kalay’s 11th release with a fantastic EP of deep acid and techno. Previously, Lou has only released a handful of projects on his own imprint, Lou Karsh Records, and under a mysterious alter ego, Reptant. Here we find him flipping the switch between celestial sounding acid techno and more analogue driven machine workouts, a welcome combination of sounds that are certainly primed for the dancefloor.

The B1, “Robotnik,” was an instant favorite of the Bolting Bit’s staff. Taking cues from acid vets like Paranoid London, “Robotnik” immediately reminds us of the group’s finer material. Heavy emphasis is placed on a monotonous acid line, while beautifully produced atmospherics clang deep behind lines of percussive groove. Karsh shows a masterful use of reverb on this track. As it builds, he increases the depth of certainelements to alter the course of an otherwise straight forward track. Try to listen to “Robotnik” without forgetting where you are, or what year it is. This is a weapon for peak after-hours moments, when sweat induced fog rises over the crowd and brings the dancers together in unity. Finishing at just over five minutes, the track never overstays its welcome. Rather, it beckons a replay.

Keep an eye out for the “Ataraxia” EP, dropping on February 2nd via X-Kalay’s Bandcamp page. The record will be available both digitally and on vinyl so there’s no excuse not to pick this one up!
