From experimental electronics and dark ambient to psychedelic pop and blissed-out indie, the direction of each mix is completely of the artist's choosing.

Mix Twelve is from producer, DJ and Circus Company cohort, Dave Aju.

San Francisco Bay Area native Marc Barrite’s alias Dave Aju has become a reliable name for fresh and expressive electronic music over the last decade, combining a deep knowledge and passion for dance music history with a fearless, forward-thinking approach to production and performance. A diverse range of influences, from his jazz upbringing and hip-hop roots to the outer realms of experimental rock and musique concréte can be heard in Aju’s unique sound.

Dave Aju remixes, DJ sets, and live performances are in high demand at labels, clubs, and festivals across the globe. And now, following the success and praise for his debut album Open Wide – created entirely with his mouth, and the acclaimed autobiographical follow-up Heirlooms, Aju is more active than ever further developing his musical universe, including some promising collaborations such as the voice of Guillaume & The Coutu Dumonts’ new band project The Side Effects, new works for Matthew Herbert’s Accidental label and more recently the release of his 3rd studio album, Black Frames.

ABOUT THE MIX

"This is a one-take vinyl mix of a few personal non-club classics that recall beautiful moments and people in my life. From the moment I first saw The Skull Sessions LP artwork in my father's collection as a kid, and being blown away at the first Tortoise show a good friend took me to almost 20 years ago, to landing in Brazil on tour with Arthur Verocai in the headphones, smashing down the 101 South freeway bumping J Dilla in summertime heat, or playing notorious SF bar nights with the Magnificent 7 DJ collective. 

Most of the records were just pulled from storage back home in the Bay Area last month and brought back overseas to Berlin, so in many ways this was like having a nice catch-up session with old friends while introducing them to some new ones I've met more recently. The mix was made in the cave with two Technics 1210 MK2s, a Rane Empath mixer, some pretty nasty back-up needles borrowed from Mike Shannon, and love."

The mask: It was uncovered in a time long forgotten, when heroes were mortal and time was fickle. The martyr, now known simply as “The Masked one,” was framed for a terrible deed he did not commit, betrayed by his most loyal companion, and deemed unfit for this most tainted world. Proclaiming his innocence was futile, and so he was sentenced to death while his wicked persecutors washed their dirty hands clean.

However it was in the cataclysmic chasms of that unknowable underworld to which he was banished that he discovered his purpose. Far from the land of the living, the mask was unearthed - the brilliant, ethereal energy of this dark place moulded into his tangible sense of identity. For the long lost wanderer, it was the moment of awakening: the fusion of his mortal body with the searing, immortal energy of the mask. 

And so the masked one returned -  reanimated, he wandered the eternal deserts of the underworld. Finally he found the crack in the seal, the opening to the better reality. The startling natural light of the living world shone through the void with a beautiful sincerity as the desert sands of the other place cascaded elegantly through the inverted chasm. Though exhausted, he was invigorated, and as he reached out to touch the shifting sands, he fell through, and was reborn. The undead wanderer of the cosmos, the masked one, finally returned to fulfil his ultimate purpose.

One of the most complex and interesting organisms that inhabit the Island are ghosts. As opposed to popular folklore, Sodian’s ghosts do not spawn from deceased living creatures, instead dozens are born each time an earthstar mushroom gets pollinated by glucose rain. These fascinating creatures spend most of their time playing hide and seek in yards and forests undergrowth. Generation after generation their aptitude for hiding improves, single games now last months. For this reason napping is the main activity for anyone involved, waiting for the designated seeker to complete his quest locating the others. When they are not playing hide and seek, ghosts are sleep guardians, they gather around other lifeforms releasing earthberry scented particles in the air affecting the color balance of dreams. During our trip we also notice a different kind of ghost, more pale in color and with a pink halo following, it’s a ghost-ghost: a spectral echo of a regular ghost that can be grabbed from the sonic dimension through a soda ritual (as previously mentioned in Nature Nature and Soda Ritual). Ghost-ghosts aren’t particularly fond of hide and seek as they’re not capable of napping, somewhat contradictory to this they are constantly found yawning. Their behavior is still uncertain and enigmatic to us, further studies are necessary.
