I'd not played piano in years. In 2012 my long suffering Yamaha upright was hauled out of storage and re-tuned. It had been with me since 1980.

This piece is an improvisation over a number of themes, melodies and compositions I'd written some twenty or more years ago and performed for Judi, a friend who called earlier in the day wanting to sit nearby a piano and grieve for former times. It was a humbling experience.

BAMIYARRA - NOT SO STILL(S) SOUNDSCAPE

‘I Circle Around the Studio’ is a soundscape collaboration between documentary producer Lucinda Horrocks and composer George Williams featuring the vocals of soprano Sharon Turley.
 
Structured as a series of audio chapters melding words, actions and music, and recorded, created and performed by women, ‘I Circle Around the Studio’ explores the multilayered experience of women as artists.

A unique melding of documentary practice with funky, stylish composition, the sound work was installed in 2019 as part of an exhibition of women artists called ‘Women’s Work.’ 

Each artist was recorded and interviewed by Lucinda Horrocks who created a series of audio vignettes which were augmented and transformed by George William’s inspired compositions.  

As gallery visitors wandered through the exhibition the voices of the ‘Women’s Work’ artists, combined with layers of music, rhythm, sound and song, followed them in the two-roomed space.  

The effect was an immersion in the strength of women’s voices and a celebration of the passion, frustration, sadness, joy, humour and doubt in art and in life.

About the Women’s Work Exhibition: 
Curated by textile artist and co-contributor Amanda Fewell, Women’s Work brought together seven regional Victorian women artists based in the Ballarat area who made new work in response to the theme ‘Women’s Work’. 
The exhibition featured text, assemblage, audio, textiles and illustration by the artists Laurene Dietrich, Amanda Fewell, Heather Horrocks, Lucinda Horrocks, Emma Lea, Domestic Punk and Kate Vivian. 
The artists explored the issues of women and work through representation, celebration, embodiment and analysis, revealing familiar themes in new ways. 

The exhibition was hosted by the Art Gallery of Ballarat via the Backspace Gallery local exhibition program.

Exhibition dates: 28 March-14 April 2019, Thursdays-Sundays, 12-4pm, Backspace Gallery, 15 Camp St Ballarat. Admission free.

I Circle Around the Studio

Place-we-be is a soundscape created to honour Country and our connection to it through a storying of sounds familiar to all people of Ballarat and Regional Victorian spaces; Australia even.

Immersed with recordings of natural sounds of Country, spaces are created by Deb Lowah Clark, aka deborahN, using ambient synth and guitar by Deb Lowah Clark. Production support was generously given by Dave Clark. In collaboration with those layers, the clap sticks (porrongayn), are played by Sarah Jane Hall and Bonnie Chew, with the iconic sounds of a didgeridoo, played by Tony Lovett. The sound of the didgeridoo is synonymous with contemporary Aboriginal music.  It is used in Place-we-be with due respect and acknowledgement to each Country where it originated from in the top-end of Northern Australia. 

Place-we-be was made complete with the guidance and sharing of Knowledge from Wadawurrung leaders, Tammy Gilson and Bonnie Chew. Bonnie’s voice articulates words shared, bringing hope and truth. They empower the listener to connect in solidarity to this place and space.  Wherever the listener is, this is an opportunity for them to reflect. For this is the ‘Place-we-be’.
