ハーフステップ系の真のダブステップが定着するのは2005-6年。
クラブで射殺事件があったり、2001年ぐらいが末期のUKG。
Wiley作の「Wot do u call it?」（なんて呼ぶ？）のタイトル通り、UKGの死とダブステップの誕生の間に様々なシーンが模索しながら次の音を追求していた。
UKGのラップクルーではGrime、Sublowなど、MC乗りやすい素朴なUKG変異株が流行りだすと同時に、ハイクオリティなトラックメークを誇るDark Garageも進化してきている。
その一方、パラレルで動いていたUKテックハウスシーンでは四つうちがBreaksにシフトしている。
外からその動きを見据え、すべてをインスパイアにしていくBreakstep、UK Industrial Bassというような雑種型のシーンもある。
その前のUKのシーンは一直線で次々とジャンルが変わっていく過程と違って、同時にいろんなシーンが動いていて、何が起きるかわからないような状況。
その状況の面白さをすぐに分かったのはIDMの名門で、この時期にRephlexやPlanet MuなどがUKの新しいベースサウンドをリリースしていく。
たどりつくのはダブステップ。

今回のミックスは、新譜まぜつつ、上記のようなIDM系UK Bassと、Breakstep/UK Electroの曲を多めに収録。

90年代のイギリスのダンスミュージックは猛スピードで進化したけど、その進化過程自体はほぼ一直線だったため、解読するにはあまり苦労しない。
90年代後半のイギリスは進化も徐々に失速しはじめ、2000年代入ってから急に暴落したと感じた人も多かった。
ダブステの誕生はその何年後で、ある意味奇跡的なものでした。
90年代と違って、2000年代前半は並行で様々なシーンが動いていて、それらのシーンが合流した結果ダブステが生まれたともいえる。
明るくてマスアピールで成功したUKGがはまり込んでしまい、そこからもっと悲観的なDark Garageが生まれてくるし、GrimeというMCの様子を強めた音楽にもはずみがつき、Breakbeatを使ったBreaks寄りのGarageもある。
同じくBreakbeatを使ってるけど、Breaksのスムーズさがない、ハーフステップ型のBreakstepもダブステになる直前に現れる。
この時期IDM名門が「Grime」というコンピレーションを出したけど、当時「これグライムじゃなくない？」っていう議論もたくさんされていた。
今になって振り返ってみたらそれは本当にグライムともダブステともブレークステップともいえる。
その少し前だったら「Grime」界隈の中でも「Grime」が正直何なのかわからない。Wileyの「Wot Do U Call It?」ってまさにその時期の混乱を代表している。Eskimo DanceというパーティーをオーガナイズしていたWileyの周りはそれをEskiBeatと呼んでいたし、BlackOpsあたりは自分の音をSublowと呼んでいた。
実はもう一つのシーンがあった。
96年あたりからUK産エキスぺりメンタルテクノとエレクトロを作っていた界隈もあった。
この辺は、UKG・Grime等の関係性でいうとほとんどないはず。このシーンはテクノだけあって、UKG周りと違って同じロンドンではあるが「ストリート」との関係性はほぼゼロ。
でもイギリス人の音好きは「ストリート」でなくても、音楽としての、UKG暴落後の様々のサウンドの良さ・ポテンシャルをよくわかっていた。
「ストリート」より「オタク」に近いIDMの名門が「Grime」というコンピレーションを出すのと同様、2000年代前半で彼らが作っていたテクノとエレクトロにどんどん「グライム」などの色が強くなってくる。
この辺のリリースはGrimeのパーティーでかかることも一切ないし、ダブステがしっかり形成してからこのサウンドが流行ったわけでもない。
ただただ、2003年ー2005年の間にテクノ、エレクトロ、グライム、ＩＤＭ、ブレークステップの良さをすべて取りまとめた、ミニマルかつダークな、最強雑種ベースサウンドがあった。
その辺のレコードを厳選して作ったミックスです。

This mix was originally posted last year on Clash Magazine as part of their podcast series.  A mix for celebrating fun in da sun.  

Here's my description on Clash from fall 2012 :
This mix is a soundtrack to your Indian summer, if you’re having one right now, or a mix for those people that are in need of a lil’ sunshine. It’s a very summery/sunny mix to bring you out of your fall funk. Lots of juke/footwork and a lil’ jungle thrown in for good measure. There’s some jokes in there too. I went for the more soulful style of footwork instead of the colder minimal tunes meant more for the dancefloor. I played this exact set at the XLR8R boat party at Dimensions festival in Croatia this summer.
