This month I spoke with Hayley Croom, an intensely funny, kind, smart dame who's been running an independent business for over ten years. (You can find her at http://paintboxsoapworks.com)

We covered the classic subjects you might expect, like how to stay sane while working at home alone or what’s helped Hayley sustain her practice for the long haul as an indie business owner. We also got into the dangers of being labeled as exceptional or gifted as a young person, our mutual loathing of the phrase “jack of all trades, master of none,” and the dangers of side hustle culture. Much of our discussion relates to the challenge of how we can simultaneously honor our own areas of expertise and educate audiences on their value. And THEN we got way into the concept of being “from, not of” in our respective upbringings. Hayley’s the child of two Brits who emigrated to Montreal, and then brought her to the US as a youngster, making her “an absolute pro at Not Belonging.” We had a wonderful time comparing notes on finding a tribe, feeling at home in the world, and navigating the nature of long-term practices and relationships.

I should mention that we do discuss unplanned pregnancy, abortion, and adoption in the second half of our conversation, just in case you want to give that a pass. Personally, I was incredibly moved by Hayley’s candor and compassion, and it took the discussion to some really wonderful places. I am deeply grateful for everything we discussed.
