Alec Longstreth is in it for the long haul. 

On July 13th, 2002 Alec decided he was going to Draw Comics Every Day, and has missed only eight days in the sixteen years since. When I met Alec in 2010, he was teaching at the Center for Cartoon Studies—and I was about to draw my very first 8-page minicomic (which then became the first chapter of my book, Baggywrinkles). 

Alec was several years into drawing his graphic novel Basewood and wasn't going to shave or cut his hair till it was finished. In total, the book took 6,000 hours to complete—information we have because Alec is a BEAST about documenting progress and process. I have a hunch that my love of structured creative projects (Inktober, the 100 Day Project, etc.) started with Alec's example. His passion, dedication, and obsession with metrics set me on the path to becoming the cartoonist I am today. 

I was fortunate enough to catch up with Alec while visiting Santa Fe on my big summer book tour! In this hour-long conversation, we discuss the power of metrics, parenthood, the scarcity of time, popsicles, R2D2, cool facts about Russian Libraries, why museums are the best, the trouble with Pop Art, what it means to leave a legacy as a cartoonist, and LOTS more.

(Oh, did I mention his adorable toddler Suzanne is also in on the act? SHE IS. IT'S VERY CUTE. WE BUILD A LEGO HOUSE TOGETHER.)
