I was in a situation where I desperately wanted to talk to someone who had cut me out of their life completely. After a three year relationship the break was incomprehensible and I didn’t know how to cope with it. By awful coincidence I was also told I was being dropped by my record label on the same day, so it was just one rejection too many. 

L.A. was never a song I considered would be heard by anyone, it was my attempt to try and get a response from my girlfriend. She wasn’t answering my calls, my texts, my emails…I thought if I sent the words in a song to tell her what I was feeling, perhaps that might provoke a response. I remember sitting by my laptop, constantly refreshing the page on Soundcloud to see if she had listened yet. The next day the song had two play counts, but she never replied.

After that I didn’t revisit the song for a long time, it felt too blunt and too private. The lyrics revealed things about me I wouldn’t want people close to me knowing, let alone complete strangers. It’s weird because I look back at my Instagram from that time and the juxtaposition between what I was posting on social media in comparison to how I was feeling is so stark. On the surface I was off to Los Angeles for an incredible trip, meeting the heads of big companies, working with multi Grammy award winning producers, posting from picture perfect beaches, meeting beautiful people…But on the flip side I was broken and trying to escape after the two biggest loses of my life. I think that’s why I came back to this song after all, it felt important for me to share my truth. “Everybody tells me that I’m coping, but it doesn’t feel that way”. “I just booked myself a ticket to LA, like the sun can burn away the pain, like the girls can fuck away the heartache, I wish I could fuck away the heartache.“
