In this exclusive commentary, genre-blending songwriter Marlon Funaki talks about his rise as a self-taught guitarist and recording artist, and breaks down key tracks. He made his SoundCloud debut at just 16 with the debut single “Get Out of My Face,” which was recorded in his bedroom. After promising his parents he’d get a college degree before committing to music full-time, he did just that. On the strength of songs such as “when sunday comes around,” Marlon earned an offer to open some tour dates for the country star Billy Currington. “Red Hearts,” he says, is another song that means a lot to him.
