ABOUT Cigarra:

Ágatha Barbosa (Cigarra) is a DJ, VJ, performer and producer from São Paulo and currently living in Lisbon, Portugal. She is a member of Tropical Twista Records and the VOODOOHOP collective. She also leads 2 parallel projects: Jardim Eléctrico that focuses on audiovisuals and Jardim das Descoisas that focuses on kinderculture.

In her sets, Brazilian rhythms and exotic, world sounds combine with contagious low frequencies and hypnotic, seductive cuts. Playing sets for 10 of her 30 years, Cigarra released her first EP “Límbica” with tracks that have been part of the most recent history of her collage work. Her research for this EP is based on cultures that are ancestral and organic, urban and synthetic, and includes ghetto-electronics and psychedelic rock. The EP has 6 tracks based on sampling. Each one resembles a hurricane in a woman’s voice and is powerful.

Here's the recording for my DJ set from July 2nd, 2017 at the Katerblau Kiosk, hands down my favorite place to play music in Berlin.  The whole venue is a wonderland of discovery, the staff is extremely kind and hospitable, and I don't think I've played for a more open minded crowd in all of Europe. Longer sets allows you to take your time and be patient with the music, and the mixing.  The slow building journey I had imagined in my mind, was possible to make a reality, and extra time allowed me to experiment as well. This was probably my favorite gig of my entire 2 month Summer Sol Europe Tour. I hope you enjoy this mix as much as I had creating it in the Kiosk.  Thanks to Mira, Britta, Martin, Claudia, Joyce, David, Brett, Toto, Sylvie, Dorin, any other friends I may have forgotten who were there, and especially to all you lovely dancers who joined me on this ride. »The inspiration behind my Seaside Trip journey is this amazing poem by the beloved Pablo Neruda, called The Sea. To me, what Pablo seems to be telling us is that the sea is a living, breathing organism, whose essence is an ongoing, caressing movement. All seas, like all human lives, are joined in a certain, unbreakable way. In my Seaside Trip journey I tried to convey this message by using a full range of soul-bound beats, melodies and vocals from all around the world.« Niki Sadeki

Djoon club founder Afshin began his career in the Parisian house scene by throwing acid house nights with Laurent Garnier, inviting legends such as Joey Negro and Norman Jay to host the 'Sweet House party’ in the 90s. In 2003 he founded the legendary Djoon Club which quickly became the reference point for house culture in Paris, and a European hot spot for house dancers from Chicago to Johannesburg.

The 30th and milestone story of our series is marked by the wonderful Portuguese duo Ohxalá. It is with great pleasure to host this rare sound on our series. Porto - Portugal. "Banho Maria" is the Portuguese expression for a slow-cooking technique used to melt chocolate. Enjoy two hours of slow, melting sounds enhanced by Ohxalá's unique touches.

Ohxalá is the musical project of Maria & Luis who live in Porto, Portugal Their tracks are part of several mixtapes around the world within the growing wave of ethnobeats. In 2017 they released their debut EP “O Futuro do Passado” in Casa Caos (BR), Dona Cuíca EP on Cosmic Awakenings (US) and more recently the Sereias do Planeta Vermelho Ep on Ready Mix Records (CA) with remixes from acclaimed producers such as M. Rux, Lemurian, Dandara, Discoshaman, Intiche, Nillo & Maracuyá, MiRET, Thommie G and Rodrigo Gallardo.

The duo is eager to explore a thematic cut with a focus on Portuguese, Brazilian and African culture, inspired by the strong rhythmic foundation of popular and ancient music. Their productions are full of field recordings and booming bass lines and they did not skimp on the effort to incorporate traditional ethnic folk elements into contemporary electronic music - which is what makes this project a unique musical experience.

This voyage is a live recording of the duo's DJ set at a Banho Maria party in Maus Hábitos.
