This piece was inspired by a video installation entitled “A love story” by the artist Amar Kanwar I came across at the Carnegie Museum, which prompted me to write a piece about how we as humans express love in relationships. Love and relationships are truly one of the most paradoxical aspects of being human. The simplicity of love at the same time renders it complicated beyond expression. In this piece I try to articulate the nuances of this complexity through music. Each of the movements in this piece is an attempt to illustrate distinctive kinds of love and the tangled emotions that humans have when experiencing love.

Program Note: Out of many possible imageries, The Ocean Was Still is not about "rage and relief". I wanted to stay away from building up drama in the piece. Using a wide spectrum of register, the music moves freely with both swift and lingering gestures.
