Dear Poetry is an advice column that turns to poems for answers to callers’ questions. In each episode, a caller sends us their dilemma, and we invite a poet to listen to whatever it is that’s troubling them, and to read a poem that offers consolation, guidance, or just a good laugh. The podcast features some of my very favorite writers and poets – including Cheryl Strayed, Chen Chen, Camille Dungy, JP Brammer,  Pádraig Ó Tuama, and many others – and will be published July 7th, 2022 on Audible.

There’s no rules, and there’s no plans
But let me tell you how I start these trends

Never interrupt me when I’m scissorin’ 
Never follow patterns, the patterns gotta follow me 
Running out of glitter, gotta go on a shopping spree
Yeah, I go to Michaels, I ain’t snobby
But I never fuck with Hobby Lobby
Got my coupons, got my flyers
Got my cart, tearing up these aisles
Get that glitter and those pens for my work in progress
Get those buttons and sequins for my work in progress
Bust these gift cards just to realize my work in progress
Make it rain if you wanna see my work in progress

Look, I need a glue stick, need a bent trimmer
Need a heat gun, need a light shimmer
Need some fresh felt, I need some jump rings
I can’t forget those Shrinky Dinks
Got coupons? That’s what I’m saying
Project 800 just like my credit
They got a special, well, I'm tryna get it
I got it started, now I gotta finish
I don't quit, I wanna craft
I wanna throw, I wanna cast
I want to make my project miraculous, like something you’d never imagine
My craft game is fire, this project is bitchin’
Try to distract me but I keep on stitchin’
I craft this thing like it’s one day to Christmas 
When I get it finished, you won’t wanna miss this

Your honor, I’m old school crafty
Beastie Boys wrote a whole song about me
Making shit is a messy endeavor
Spill glitter in here, you got glitter forever
Never sell on Etsy, but I don’t keep it 
At the holidays, you know that I sweep it
Handmade gifts for everyone I’m meeting
