Following in the footsteps of Sawlin and Yan Cook last year, Ann Aimee has readied its next release. This one comes from UK tastemaker and Radio 1 presenter Mosca, and is his first release of the year after previous releases on labels like Martyn’s 3024 and Hypercolour.

First up is ‘It's Not What It Looks Like’ - a hunched over, industrial tinged house groove with rattling percussion and a heavy kick drum. Fully of grainy textures and clanging machines, the whole thing is backlit with serene pads and smeared with deft synth patterns. ‘Kneecap’ is even more direct, with tiny little off kilter chords bringing a sense of paranoia to the barrelling beats and bristling percussion. It’s muscular and heavy yet inviting, whilst final offering ‘Press Up’ is a beautifully swung bit of deep and atmospheric house – all the edges are nicely frayed and the whole thing is smoothed over with misty textures as the barrelled-up sense of funk grows more and more lively as things progress. It’s been a while since we heard from Mosca, but this one sure was worth the wait.

As always with this lovingly crafted label, the EP comes with full cover artwork by Boris Tellegen.

This new track is a perfect example of their love affair with the sleazier side of house music, razor sharp synth lines cascade over a hefty set of percussion and a rumbling, morose b-line while a pitched-down, barely audible vocal lurks in the background. After exploding onto the scene last year with the highly charged and widely acclaimed CLR debut, ‘The Engine EP’, Bryan Black revises his BLACKASTEROID guise to present ‘Black Acid’: five tracks of lab-crafted techno, and a deeply groovy entry into the Electric Deluxe stable. 

Whilst BLACKASTEROID is still a fairly fledgling endeavour, Black’s production credentials are as rich as they are steeped. Starting out at Paisley Park Studios as a sound designer for Prince, Black proceeded to foment a passion for techno as the other half of Motor. Signed to Novamute in 2003, over the course of nearly a decade Black and his partner Olivier Grasset consolidated EBM, industrial, pop and electro fusions into four albums and a string of EPs. But it is as BLACKASTEROID that Black has come into his own as a unique and highly skilled sonic engineer, with ‘Black Acid’ marking further steps towards a purer, and yet boundless engagement with techno.

“This EP is about chemistry and space. I chose to focus on raw, analogue sounds. I spent a lot of time playing with white noise, static and sub bass, often layering them together and coming up with new sounds in the process.”

From the EP’s punchy granular title track to the meticulous disorder surrounding “Hydrogen” and palette of alien, mechanical sounds that proliferate throughout—distinctly towards the EP’s space-themed closers: “Pressure”, “Lunar Landing” and “Lunar Escape”—‘Black Acid’ is an inventive and ever intriguing record. Like some estranged and maverick alchemist, Bryan Black mixes drops of discordant home-brewed noise with plenty of infectious floor-ready rhythms to form compounds that transcend straight listening and danceable orientations. Indeed, whether an aficionado of sound or simple beat junkie, ‘Black Acid’ will lure you in with one and hook you with the other. Turn up the bass and dive deep into its timbres to discover the weird and wonderful vistas of BLACKASTEROID’s sonic imagining.

OVERVIEW:
Techno fans in New York and Chicago should be pretty aware of Jeff Derringer by now. Since launching Oktave in October 2009 with partner Kevin Gregor, the former indie rocker has turned a passion for deeper electronic music into a respected DJ and promoter career. But it is as a producer that Jeff has begun to earn rising recognition elsewhere—throughout the US and beyond—with his records infiltrating Europe via support from the likes of Silent Servent, Chris Leibing and Peter Van Hoesen, along with many others that have graced Oktave over the years.

A trio of Perc Trax releases saw Jeff fashion hypnotic loops into deep and darkly charged techno, culminating in the stringent artillery that landed on Speedy J’s Electric Deluxe label this summer (a collaboration between Jeff and LA protagonists Raiz). Now comes Situational Ethics, Jeff Derringer’s first full three-track EP and most serious studio statement yet. Over “Ambition”, “Compassion” and “Shame” Jeff Derringer masterfully builds tension with shamanic cyclical rhythms and punishing basslines, weaved here into potent and intoxicating concoctions from haunted beginning, viper-laden middle to heavyweight end. Electric Deluxe bedfellow Brendon Moeller then concludes the EP with a rework of “Shame” plied with signature Moeller-crafted sounds over a punchy, turbulent beat that only just about lifts Jeff Derringer’s powerful spell.

Fachwerk boss and dubby techno don Mike Dehnert steps away from his usual home for a new EP on Delsin entitled ‘Umgangston’. It’s not his first time on the label following last year’s Fachwerk album, but it does see him cast his sonic net a little further afield.

‘Andruck’ swings back and forth on a squelchy synth hook as tin foil hi hats cut up long thin pads. Knocking bell sounds add plenty of silvery colours to the dubby bass below, and it’s one of the more serene and beautiful Dehnert cuts of recent times.

‘Tracer’ is much sterner, with huge Basic Channel dub waves breaking beneath scratchy synths and acid bleeps. Fizzing and fine grain like warm white noise, it’s for those more intense dancefloor moments.

‘Refillable’ finds Mike in full on rave mode with filters twisting and turning and skewing synths into weird patterns as hi hat ringlets race between sandy claps and a tortured vocal yelps out every so often. Rushy and racy, it’s underpinned with a walloping kick drum where closer ‘Umgangston’ is about knife-edge intensity, cantering kick drums and wild, freeform synth lines.

Seemingly a touch untethered from his usual basement dub techno aesthetic, Mike Dehnert might surprise you with this one.

Gabriel D&#8217;Or &amp; Bordoy continue to unfold their scroll of skills and this time they have delved into even more uncharted territory and, of course, emerged victorious.

&#8220;Carbon 7&#8221; starts out deceivingly with shadowy elements and otherworldly effects,which unexpectedly give way to old school chords that firmly stand their ground and lead to a breakdown of epic proportions. The same vibe continues on &#8220;Carbon 12&#8221;, where grinding drums and subtle stabs share center stage with the now familiar chords that, once again, take things to a whole new level.

Alex Bau is the the true, post-apocalytpic gatekeeper. The stomping drums of his latest offering provide the backdrop for his effects-laden soundscape, letting layers of noise do the talking, while engulfing the unsuspected listener in a multitude of shadows.The Spektre remix is a hypnotic rumble with a bass-heavy attitude and micro riffs interplaying with synth snippets. As always, the boys have maintained their cavernous vibe while mutating the original&#8217;s elements in style.

The Magnus Men return with Act Two, the second chapter in what is fast becoming one of techno's most talked about projects, this time with all star remixes. The title track 'Act Two' continues where the Magnus debut 'Act One' left off. Raw analog processing meets storming percussion to amp things up whilst preserving that signature funk. First up on remix duties is Truncate who expertly strips things down to an almost atomic level and then brings it back with a thump as only he can. Coming up second is Brendon Moeller who drops a THC infused dubbed out cut with acid bleeps and crack house swing.
Act Two was mastered and cut by Man Made Mastering Berlin and is available in limited quantities on beautiful blue vinyl. Coming soon to a bass bin near you!

Since he released with 'OR' one of the best albums of 2011, Kangding Ray was on our list for a future cooperation. We just needed to wait for the right track for him to remix. That came in the form of Albert Van Abbe's demo for Curle. On his own label No Comment he had previously also worked with Conforce and Convextion - next to Gerald Donald (!), Sleeparchive and Abdulla Rashim. This is however Albert's first release outside of No Comment. The Sugar Lobby Series counts three numbered tracks. 9191 is definitely peaktime stuff, 9090 is deeper but Kangding Ray turns that one into a dark monster too. 9390 concludes the EP with atmospheric offbeats, to cool you down again.

It is Monday the 28th of January 2013 and we welcome back a returning guest on this week´s CLR Podcast. Luis Flores is one of Mexico´s most popular Techno producers and live acts, who is widely known for his diversified and groovy style.

A minimal use of elements results in a rich spectrum of textures and a dark and trippy dance floor pull. Live shows, improvisational in nature, can last anywhere from one to three hours, resulting in a hypnotic exploration of the possibilities of electronic production.

He has been a Techno activist at the forefront of the Mexican scene for the past 15 years and has worked as the artistic director of the highly influential label Nopal Beat Records, providing a stage for local producers.

Luis Flores has had several original tracks in the playlists of many of the biggest players in the scene and has played his much-loved live sets at countless renowned clubs and festivals worldwide.

Sound> Classifying Flores’s sound is a difficult feat, and that is precisely the  point. His personality and experience are present in every track he produces, resulting in a dark, groove driven sound. Luis’s interaction with the machine becomes the listeners’ interaction with auditory landscapes of eeriness, altered states and paranoia. A minimal use of elements results in a rich spectrum of textures and a dark and trippy dance floor pull. Live shows, improvisational in nature, can last anywhere from 2- 5 hours, resulting in a hypnotic exploration of the possibilities of electronic production.

Bio> In the more than 17 years he has been producing electronic music, Luis Flores has not only made a name for himself but has been at the forefront of a movement that made the city of Guadalajara, Mexico, a hot spot for electronic music production and events. At the center of this movement was Nopal Beat Records, a label he ran from 1998 to 2006. At the same time, he also worked with the city’s cultural bureau to produce a string of massive, free public events that could bring electronic music to a wider group of people and provided a stage for local producers.

In 2007, he returned to the studio focused once again in his techno roots which quickly yielded results like his enduring relationship with L.A.’s Droid Behavior or the demand for his live shows.

In 2009 the release of the “Damage” EP on Droid Recordings, established Flores as an international artist with its immediate success, making the charts of artists such as Speedy J, The Detroit Grand Pubbahs and Chris Liebing’s Best 10 of 2009. In 2010, Dietrich Schoenemann’s Hidden Agenda released “Pain + Prosthetics”, an EP which among other things includes a collaboration with Canadian: Vitamins 4 U.

Flores published “Love Your Machine” under the German imprint Micro.Fon the following year. Further exploring the audiovisual aspect of his music, he created the video teaser for the single using J.G. Ballard’s “Crash” as reference and inspiration.

In 2012 he returned to Droid for the release of “New Flesh” which included remixes by label owner Drumcell and CLR’s Brian Sanhaji. This year was also marked by people's interest in his sound with remix requests for legendary names like Jam n Spoon and The Advent.

2013 began with his first collaboration with Berlin based producer Material Object and the release of the “Crowd Control” EP under the Impact Unit moniker for the French label Silent Steps and in 2014 he released “Rituals of Submission” on Detroit’s Blank Code, “Test Pattern” EP in the Spring for CLR and the “Metal” remix for Black Asteroid under EDLX.

He began 2015 with the the release of “43” on Alex Bau’s Credo compilation and with his 3rd release for Droid Recordings, the “Static Forces” EP.

Luis has represented México at the Meet in Beijing, ADE in Amsterdam, Borderline Festival in China, Brussels BEMF, among others.
