ShockOne - Way You Move

These days, the name L Plus on a release comes laden with expectations. There'll be expansive areas of soundscape harbouring rave-reverberating bass and precision-strike drums. There'll be detailed attention to musicality and a never-lapsing surge of energy. And if you've been checking shows from heavy-hitters like Friction recently, you'll know that this EP delivers on those expectations to the max.

“Jailbreak” is all about controlled aggression. A suspenseful chord pattern interspersed with drive-by shots of bass sets the scene. Then there's a multi-stage drop, first delivering us into a pressurised container of bass and kicks, before a further build leads us to the addition of punch-to-the-solar-plexus snares. This is heavy, heavy, unrelenting stuff.

And talking of heavy stuff, the next track is, aptly enough, “One Tonne of Bass”. A big room intro built from swirling atmospherics and wide sonorous sustained notes shimmers into view. Then the eponymous vocal sample signals a drop down into straight-up head-nodding grimy funk. Then L Plus keeps the heat rising as the bassline modulates to give each sixteen bars a character of its own. This is one to give the dancefloor a proper workout.

Then “Arcade” brings something for ravers to love and producers to envy. The chirps, bleeps and melodic patterns of eighties gaming are recreated and woven into twenty-first synthesis in a way we haven't quite heard before. It's a shoot 'em up between nostalgic stabs and ultra-modern bass and riffs which grows into a full on sonic war, and it's an addictive exultant joy. This is one that screams out to be pulled back and played from the top.

Things are a little darker in the dystopian city conjured up by “Snitch”. There's a technoid paranoia in the air, brought on by an approaching insurgency of low end. The drop provides no relief as sparse beats leave the bassline free to fill the space with interrogation-room oppression. With one eye always on the dancefloor, this is where L Plus proves his mastery of creating mood with music.

This EP proves why L Plus tunes are a constant fixture in the sets of well-informed DJs. Combining a rare technical proficiency with a well-honed musical and storytelling sensibility, plus a ruthless desire to smash parties everywhere, this producer is at the top of his game. This is creative rave music set to blaze on raves and airwaves alike.

The cover art proudly proclaims Technique's Summer 2016 album to be “100% Drum and Bass”. You might be forgiven for thinking that begs more questions that it answers. There's a huge breadth and versatility encompassed within the genre. So, you're left asking, what particular flavour of D&B are we talking about? Well, to answer your query, pretty much all of them.

Across thirty-seven tracks, Drumsound and Bassline Smith have assembled a cross-section of D&B that only has one thing in common: that summertime vibe. The label bosses themselves roll through with the fluid jungle of the Solah-laced “Cover Our Eyes”, the no-holds-barred funk of “Rise of the Black Panther” and their epic dubwise collaboration with Digital, “First World Problem”.

And then there are the big name cameos from artists not normally seen under the Technique banner. Brookes Brothers and Danny Byrd team up with the uplifting drive of “Climb High”, matched in hands-in-the-air power by the euphoric piano of The Prototypes' “Don't Let Me Go”. J Majik recruits 78° and Louie Cabrera for “Day I Left” and “Idcomercial” respectively. And the mighty DJ SS drops an emotively claustrophobic killer in the form of “Expression”.

Of course, the regular regiment of Technique soldiers are present and correct too. Tantrum Desire delivers the tech atmospherics of “Tesoro”, while Kronology subverts the big-room sound with the unpredictable twists and turns of “Everyday”. L Plus backs up rumbling bass and popping beats with entwined chord patterns in “Invincible”. Plus Document One show two different sides to their character, with the jazzfunk vibe of “Klaxon” and the paranoid sci-fi of “Say What”.

And we're nowhere near covering everything this album has to offer. From the jungle tear-out of Brian Brainstorm's “Badman Selector” to the minimal magic of Oder's “Mesmerize”, via the liquid purity of Salaryman's “He Knows”, this is a journey that needs to be experienced. Any selection that takes you straight from Fade's “Disco Ball” into Conspire's “Glare of Brass” then to Salaryman's “Synthesized Melancholia” is making a statement about the strength in depth of the D&B genre right now.

It's all here. This is the whole summertime drum and bass experience cut up into thirty-seven expertly-formed slices which, taken together, represent the full spectrum of what the scene has to offer. It's as simple as that.

We made it! Winter's officially done and spring isn't long for this world either. We can know this for sure because the regular-as-the-seasons Technique Summer LP is just appearing over the horizon.

Our first taste of Summer comes courtesy of Smooth. The last decade has seen this artist show off a panoramic range of production styles, releasing on a string of the biggest labels in the scene including Get Hype, Viper, and RAM. And, of course, he's a highly sought-after remixer for artists as disparate as Matrix & Futurebound, Slander & Sullivan King, and Seven Lions. With this tune marking his debut on Technique Recordings, it's bound to be something special.

Right from the opening chords of “All Over the World”, we know we're in safe hands. There's a bright, uplifting, Balearic dawn flavour to the intro, and the house influence becomes ever more evident as a filtered break gives way to a call-to-rave dialogue sample.

And then there's the explosive euphoria of the drop. A pitch-twisted vocal riff layered over rock-solid bass and beats sets the tone, while warm enveloping strings draw the dance deeper. Smooth's musicality comes to the fore as he delivers us into a lighters-up breakdown, reconfiguring chords into arpeggios which lift us back into the bassline.

This tune is summertime raving encapsulated in a few minutes. Classy and sophisticated and, at the same time, packing pure dancefloor punch, Smooth has set summer off with a bang. And there's a lot more to come.

Murdock’s debut album is about to land on Viper Recordings and it’s a snapshot of what the label has achieved within its fifteen years of history. They’ve been able to provide a platform for an artist like Murdock, one of the most notable figures across drum & bass and one who has repeatedly provided a place for artists to showcase their records at his formidable Rampage Festival in Belgium. However, it’s his music which has recently caused just as much attention.

Following the singles which have proven that Murdock’s just as much of a producer as he is a ground breaking curator, ‘Stronger’ is looking to capitalise on its journey for its full release. One look at the LP’s packed track listing gives weight to this fact.
With names like Jenna G, Shystie, Roni Size and Errol Dunkley all making an appearance, Murdock has joined forces with many artists who have individually made an impact on the drum & bass scene and ‘Stronger’ is a celebration of the genre Murdock has committed to pedestalling. After the release of ‘Let it Go’ ft. M’Leah, ‘Holding On’ alongside James Marvel and ‘Dark Cloud’ with Dynamite MC, Murdock returns with a host of new music. Tracks like the soul infused ‘Make Me Stronger’, featuring Jenna G on vocals, as well as collaborations ‘Double Dutch’ with Roni Size and ‘Breathe’ where Goldi Phone Home lends her talent all reveal the first part of the album’s fresh sounds.

‘Horizon’, ‘All Day All Night’ ,'Alien' and ‘Ruby Moon’ are all stand alone offerings from Murdock on a packed album full of exclusives and they all highlight a different part of his production spectrum. The jungle mix of ‘Different Way’ and the hip-hop version of his and Dynamite’s ‘Dark Cloud’ nod to Murdock’s vast influences, something which his production boasts. Then Shystie & Sena’s appearance on ‘Can’t Keep Me Down’ and Sunday Rose on ‘Lay Down’ add more emotive touches to its catalogue. Meanwhile ‘Panic Attack’, created with the help of Doctrine, still pays homage to the dancefloor prowess Murdock has been notorious for, packaged for the LP alongside a huge array of musicality from the producer.

‘Stronger’ is an incredible feat. With a forthcoming Rampage takeover set for this Winter at London’s seminal Fabric nightclub and an international touring schedule ahead of him, Murdock has dedicated 2019 to be a defining moment in his career. Although following a host of outstanding achievements throughout his path this is no small claim and as a result ‘Stronger’ found the perfect home at a label like Viper Recordings, who push ‘Stronger’ forward with nearly two decades worth of experience.

Luka Per aka Smooth was introduced to music at the age of 10, when he began to practice piano. After practicing for 3 years and later on he became more interested in guitar, also in such genres as metal, hardcore etc. When a couple of years passed by he attended his first drum n bass party and he was hooked!

After hearing ‘Under The Moon’ which would appear on Viper Recordings ‘Acts of Mad Men’ album, Smooth was signed to the label and later went onto release his first single ‘7th Sense’ / ‘Squirm’ (feat. KG) on Viper’s sister label, Viper VIP. Smooth is also one half of Telekinesis who recently made their debut on Breed 12 Inch label, as well as one third of City of Dogs, whose track ‘Absolutely Flawless’ was featured on Pendulum’s Radio1 Essential Mix. 

2011 was a breakout year for Smooth, starting off with the massive single 'Feel So Free' on Viper VIP, which was followed by 'Calling' and Smooth's absolutely immense remix of the Matrix & Futurebound classic 'Strength 2 Strength' on Viper's 'Worldwide 001' album. This was followed by two tracks on Viper's 'Summer Slammers 2011' album, with 'Want It' and 'Alienated' (as Telekinesis). 

Smooth has gained a legion of new followers over the course of 2012 with his massive ‘Blinded By The Light EP’ released in January which featured no less than seven essential cuts which showed the amazing range of the young producer. Busy on the remix front as well, Smooth has provided official remixes for smash hits such as Camo & Krooked – ‘Get Dirty’ (feat. TC) and Seven Lions – ‘Below Us’ (feat. Shaz Sparks), as well as the upcoming Matrix & Futurebound single ‘Magnetic Eyes’ (feat. Baby Blue) and Modestep’s new single ‘Another Day’.

Now ready to launch the next chapter of his career, Smooth has set his sights on working towards his debut album on Viper Recordings which will surely catapult him amongst the elite producers in drum and bass. Serving as the first album single, ‘Virgo Cluster’ is the perfect showcase of Smooth’s trademark anthemic dancefloor funk which he is becoming world renown for.
