An artist with a rich back catalogue to his name over a 15-year period, Luke Mandala is a
welcome Proton Music debutant with his twin-track, “The Wind People”. Combining live wind
instruments and percussion in his production portfolio, Luke Mandala has been a powerhouse
creative force with music on Desert Hearts Records, Digital Structures and Dave Seaman’s
Selador. Also a global touring DJ, opener “Eagle Song” is a pulsating progressive treasure that
glitters with a beautiful melodic flow. Hitting its dancefloor straps with a strong bassline groove,
the juxtaposition of ethereal synth phrasing and fizzing hi-hats creates a dynamic piece that
reaches a scintillating zenith in the third movement. A slightly darker offering, driven by strong
kick and intricate rolling groove, “Gorgeous Darkness” retains the soft melodic motifs of its
counterpart, particularly at the beatless breakdown. Either side, a dynamic bassline sequence
creates a vibrant energy that comes to the fore with a growling, filtered variation in the second
half that sits perfectly with the arpeggiated melody woven into the delicate sonic mosaic.

Dance music royalty and a true pioneer of the underground house scene, Nick Muir has become
a firm favourite with the Proton faithful since first remixing Rick Pier O’Neil in late 2019. Since
then, the Bedrock co-founder has lit up the label with further reworkings of Eric Lune and
Sebastian Sellares. Moreover, his “All One Word” EP in mind-2023 showcased an original track
of 24-carat gold that saw standout remixes from GMJ & Matter and Trilucid. Returning for a
fourth remix, the Nick Muir interpretation of “Eagle Song” is a potent demonstration of the iconic
star’s long association with dance music. A classic old-school house vibe is married with cutting-
edge production techniques as familiar refrains shimmer across the piece, not least in the arpeggiated motif integral to the original. Intelligently integrating a timeless house piano phrase
at the mid-point, it develops with typical brio into the second half with a cascading brilliance and
powerful vibrancy.

The final remix sees newcomer, dernis, the kid makes his Proton Music debut. An artist with the
production credentials to rival any modern producer, the US star has been a mainstay in Claude
VonStroke’s DIRTYBIRD studio as well being part of the San Diego-based event group
responsible for an annual desert party of epic proportions. Also releasing through his own AZB
Studios imprint, the dernis, the kid reworking is built around a huge sub-bass groove and ticking
percussive top-line. Cleverly reimagining the melodic elements from “Gorgeous Darkness”,
immaculate production skills are in full evidence as wonderful layers of original sound are
introduced. Culminating in a beautifully crafted and free-flowing piano refrain, it gently
permeates the rasping, gritty bassline groove to create a dance-friendly framework. The result is
an outstanding debut from a US producer at the top of his game.

Luke Mandala - Gorgeous Darkness [Proton Music]

Hitting repeated heights with his “Parallel Words” EP series in August 2020 and April 2021, in addition to work for the likes of Anjunadeep, Replug and Monstercat, Nōpi now returns to Proton Music with another original offering. Showcasing his twin-track “Overload” EP, the Ukrainian producer excels once more as the pounding beat and soft, shuffling shakers of “Galactic” bristle with a deep, elemental energy. Gently modulating synth lines merge with softly pulsating white-noise washes before a central motif makes its presence felt. Filtering easily, it is complemented by a swathe of effect and soundscapes while luscious pads add layers of listener interest. The result is an aptly named opener. “Overload” continues the chunky rhythmic poise of its partner track while an uptempo percussive energy and driving bassline groove create a dance-friendly character. Full of cadenced stabs that create a house vibe along with spoken vocal cuts, the track hits a powerful zenith in the latter stages before a new arpeggio is brought to the sonic collage in impressive work from the Nōpi studio.

A Particles regular since late 2009, Vinayak A has been at the forefront of dance music for over two decades. An esteemed figure within the underground dance fraternity, his work for Bedrock, Buddha Bar and Subtract, plus performances at festivals including Magnetic Fields, VH1 and Echoes of Earth have placed him as one of India’s most successful dance artists and sound designers. After a recent Particles remix for Wolfframm in February 2024, Vinayak A now debuts on Proton Music with a typically innovative and carefully sculpted reworking of “Galactic”. Steeped in trademark organic soundscapes, familiar elements from Nōpi’s original are immaculately blended with instruments and phrasing from Vinayak’s native India as a majestic piano chord and new bassline sequence sit perfectly amongst the original components to create a mesmeric new interpretation.

Recently joining the Proton roster with his “The Wind People” EP, Luke Mandala has a strong track record for a commitment to dance music that extends to mixing live wind instruments and drumming into his production work. A regular DJ across his northwest US home, Luke’s work for Dreaming Awake, Digital Structures and Uniting Souls Music has seen him become a sought-after figure. Reworking “Overload”, a delicate rhythmic opening, knocking woodpecker clave and atmospheric wind instrumentation, paves the way for a dark bassline groove to make its presences felt in the early stages. Waxing and waning with filtered and glissando intensity, familiar phrases from the original create a rich sonic landscape before the huge bassline dominance makes a play at the stunning breakdown before blending itself once more with the cast of melodic characters and spatial effects.

World dominance has come easily to Nōpi through his “Overload” EP with further assistance coming from Vinayak A and Luke Mandala.

Happy to share this 12-2am set with you guys from one of the funnest events I've played in a while. They did a great job with this event and it fully popped off...as you can hear from the crowd (we recorded the crowd as well). 

I was playing some wind instruments and a drum pad and I'm finally getting a mix out that was recorded with a show with those instruments included.

The Great Mystery is the latest full length album by the Desert Dwellers, and it is truly a jet setting piece of work. The 12-track collection was predominately recorded on the road, in airports, airplanes, and hotel rooms and finished in multiple studios in multiple countries. Even the live recordings were done with various musicians and singers from around the world in rooms ranging from Berlin to Santa Cruz over the past 2 years. This release is a special one, because it’s the first fully realized album of all original music that Amani Friend and Treavor Moontribe have produced together, even though it is the 8th full album in the Desert Dwellers catalog, along with countless singles, eps, and remixes.

The title of the album is derived from a Terrance McKenna quote, “Life is like a moment, we’re born out of a mystery, and we die into a mystery.” The duo notes, “Life and Death are great mysteries and we felt that was a pretty amazing theme to go with.” The album also features a talented cast of collaborators including Rick Hunter playing Oud, singer Megan Chandler, violinist Hannah Thiem, Ixchel Prisma, Anuradha Genrich, and a host of others. The duo also worked with notable engineers including Torin Goodnight (Bird Of Prey), Benjamin Last (Temple Step Project), Yulu Fershtat (Perfect Stranger), and James Lumb (of Electric Skychurch Fame) who did analog summing that really transformed the sound quality of the album.

The diverse recording locations are just as mixed as the albums vast range of musical inspirations. The pair’s musical palate spans from classical world music to psychedelic rock, all forms of hypnotic deep electronic music, reggae and dub, to pop and everything in between. The duo enthusiastically state, “Its always been a dream to create an album that embodied many of the styles we resonate most with, and The Great Mystery is that album!” They add, “When it comes to electronic music we have always refused to be ‘genrefied’ and this album goes on the complete journey from our classic tribal downtempo grooves to tribal techno, psychedelic trance, dubstep and ambient, all under one unified sound.”

Luke’s dynamic live act includes playing a mixture of electronic and acoustic music while mixing in multiple live wind instruments and live drumming. His lifelong devotion to community dance medicine started at age 14 in 1998 when he started to DJ at northwest USA raveriffic events! He then started touring the world and releasing hundreds of songs released with a large number of the biggest labels in the world like Selador, Desert Hearts, Digital Structures, Dreaming Awake, Desert Trax, Booka Shade Music. 

This is deep piscean scorpio music, sprinkled with unusual sounds, unexpected twists, eclectic mix of global sounds, various tempos and grooves. It reflects stories of love-driven culture and open-minded ideas.  Depending on the crowd, the sets can vary from being pretty and uplifting to deep, dark, and primal, although they typically feature melodic and atmospheric textures infused with a lot of emotion.  Luke also has a functional (natural, root cause) medicine practice as this weaves so beautiful with dance and music medicine.
