For the third installment of Token’s Fuga compilations, the label invites another list of 9 cutting edge artists to put their skills to the test. Ignez, Emily Jeanne, Altinbas & Cirkle, Alarico, Dustmite, Yant, Marcal, and Decka all offer their unique vision of contemporary club music for a collection of tunneling and intelligent cuts. 

Introducing the compilation, Ignez warms us up with the appropriately-named ‘Celestial’ - a 6 minute argument between melody and dissonance over a thick percussive line. Emily Jeanne then continues with ‘Red River Delta’ to lift some of the weight with a dissociative mind-bender. The crisp sound design and wide stereo image allow for an exhale before Altinbas and Cirkle introduce their collaboration ‘Uhlanga’. With our focus back on the body, the duo turn up the pace and prioritize groove. With rhythm at the forefront, depth is given to the track in the ambience, creating a rainforest-like atmosphere with resonant stabs streaking over the tighter low-end. Alarico then picks things up by taking advantage of this crescendo to present the energetic climax of the compilation with ‘Spit’. Hypnotism becomes almost paranoia with vocal cuts camouflaging themselves in the pulse of the track that only releases us with the occasional fleeting arpeggio. Walls rise and we’re in concrete for Dustmite’s ‘Filaments and Jaws’, which wastes no time in introducing itself with clear intentions and an imposing, low hi hat. He then lifts the record with a hovering main synth that drifts the experience back into a nervosity that complements the preceding track. It’s Yant’s turn to guide us with ‘Take the Reins’ - an almost nostalgic record with infectious chord stabs over a pounding 909, before leaving us with Marcal. ‘Dancing Pursuit’ is offered to the listener as another dance floor weapon with a density in its percussion and ambience that’s balanced by the sequence of the lead synth and creates a lot of energy. Decka then takes control with ‘Fracture’ with a brutally saturated kick over whipping two-bar synth loops to close out the compilation with a head-spinner.

Offering a three track EP on Token, emblematic UK producer James Ruskin proves his capability and linear focus once again through ‘From the Ashes’. Looking past trends to create a lasting record rich in texture and thick with impact, the project affirms what the scene has already known to be true about his work for the past 25 years. 

Setting his intentions from the A1, Ruskin wastes no time by creating an intimidating introduction. Saturated percussion and stuttering keys whip through a 4 minute masterclass of sound system focused production. Adventurous in structure, Ruskin remains unquestionably in control of a bursting, almost chaotic track. ‘From the Ashes 2’ picks up what was left off, containing a hard-set groove with hi hats slithering in progressively from the stereo image to slightly destabilize an impressive club-heavy tool. With intricate work being done in the ambience, the EP’s hard hitting second track booms through a cavernous acoustic, giving the record not only body, but dimension. Switching up the rhythm and focusing on more mental synth work for the third act, Ruskin quickly and mercilessly rips through his work with a shrill pad, creating overwhelming tension to be released in the first third of the recording. He brings a dosed dissonance between his elements, reflective of the qualities of vintage techno with today’s capabilities and arrangement. Pushing intensity through waves, Ruskin leaves us in anticipation of a fourth track that is never given.

Up next on Wolfskuil Records and as the title suggests we find some of Shlømo’s finest cuts on the Dutch imprint reworked by Oscar Mulero, Johannes Heil and Tripeo. 

Spanish techno master Oscar Mulero takes over the A-side, keeps the heat of the original and adds extra tension to offer a stand out rendition of ‘Obsession’, while in ‘Vanished Breath’ he goes deep and delivers fine electronica and a sophisticated, experimental remix where broken beats and haunting synths seamlessly blend to create ghostly atmospheres.

On the flip side Johannes Heil transforms the beatless, synth-heavy beauty ‘M.U.M.’ into an euphoric, driving techno track, right before Tripeo proves ones again his strong command on the dancefloor with a solid, twisted version of ‘Avadon Part 1’.

When it was announced that Luke Slater was going to release his latest Planetary Assault Systems album on Ostgut Ton, it hardly came as a surprise. After all, he'd already given them an epic ambient cut for their Shut Up and Dance! Updated ballet soundtrack, and he's been a semi-regular fixture behind the decks at Berghain since late 2006. But even given his previous record for raw techno and acid as Planetary Assault Systems, it does seem as if Temporary Suspension is Luke Slater's "Berghain album"—a distillation of his adventures at the club, both in the DJ booth and whilst getting sweaty amongst the muscle marys and party animals. Even the introduction of the record draws direct comparisons to the Berghain experience, with the slow fade in to an already driving beat mirroring the walk up the first set of stairs to an already bulging dance floor.

Having only a scant few releases to its name, L.B. Dub Corp, one of Luke Slater's lesser used guises, slinks in and out of the scene, dropping off quality EP's and remixes when you least expect it. Finding a new and appropriate home on Ostgut, the Take It Down (In Dub) EP has two spacey hitters. A slappy bass, a noise wash, and a growling kick are what kick off the title track, slowly giving way to a slightly pitched down vocal drop of "take it down." 

Not nearly as high in the BPM's as Slater's Planetary Assault System productions, "Take It Down" is a slyly warping beast. It has a pristine sludge to it that begs for an eyes-closed demonic shuffle, its brooding drone perfect for early hour madness. More than halfway through, though, the entire thing shifts to reveal a grimey, rinsed out synth that opens the entire 11+ minutes of the track up to a new feel and intensity. 

Where things really get interesting is on flipside "It's What You Feel." One of the most inviting basslines in a while partners with a steady synth pad for a cleverly produced house track. A steady groove paves the way for a classic piano line summoned from Chicago. This B-side monster is the perfect counterpart to the A, and makes this one of Slater's best efforts since his PAS EP on Ostgut last year.
