Looking after my friend’s narrow boat for a week, I became aware of an inertia like state switching from the gentle rocking of the boat to the stability of land. Whenever I stepped onto the canal path, I still felt the water dancing in my head, swaying my thoughts rhythmically like a pendulum. 

This sense ebbed and flowed, but became more dominant the longer I spent aboard. Over time, this recurring feeling came to represent a bittersweet presence of memory and how our recollections can stay around longer than they are welcome.

Miyachi - Arc

This is the 8th track that I wrote for a soundwalk around the National Botanical Gardens in Dublin than can be accessed through the Echoes app here: https://explore.echoes.xyz/collections/43DUnE46Sa8IGfZq

The piece is in 8 geolocated sections, and uses location (field) recordings, synthesizers, and percussion. When a user arrives at a specific location in the National Botanical Gardens, that location’s music will be triggered on the Echoes app.

On 27 January 2023, myself and my four-year-old son went exploring some of our favourite spots in the National Botanical Gardens, and by making location (field) recordings collected sounds that excited us. I have taken these location recordings home, and augmented or ornamented them by articulating the resonant frequencies found on the recordings on synthesizers and other instruments I have at home. The location recordings you can hear are the result of naively listening to not only the environment around us, but our place, and our impact within it. As a result, there is no attempt to edit or remove ourselves from the recordings, and at times you can hear myself and my son discussing things that we hear and see with wonder and appreciation.

I hope you enjoy this little ornamented soundwalk guided by myself and a four-year-old, and enjoy exploring the beauty of the National Botanical Gardens.

I absolutely loved making this piece as preparatory research for an different work I'm currently writing for Plus Minus Ensemble as part of Zubin Kanga's Cyborg Soloists UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship at Royal Holloway University of London.

Luke Harrison is a British composer.
During his Batchelor of Music in Composition at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, Luke studied under Howard Skempton, Fumiko Miyachi, Richard Ayres, Sean Clancy, Martjin Padding, Joe Cutler, Michael Wolters and with Nico Muhly while at Dartington International Summer School.
