In between composing, writing, rehearsing, and recording, I have been improvising a lot, and this track is the result of one of those moments. It is very different from what I am working on but, somehow, it holds my essence, and it makes me feel well. Instead of letting it disappear along with many other pieces that I never share with others, I have decided to publish it in celebration of #pianoday2018. I hope you enjoy it.

UK composer Matt Emery follows his extraordinarily beautiful debut album Empire (September 2017) with a brand new single, ‘I Put a Flame in Your Heart’. Released digitally on September 7th 2018 via Injazero Records, the single is a delicate piano composition featuring a wave of 8 pianos meandering through the piece in a wistful and atmospheric mood, delivered with the sombre grace of heavyweights such as Nils Frahm, Ólafur Arnalds and Chilly Gonzales. 

The full band version sees Emery's music swell with frantic drums, throbbing synths and a full choir culminating in an expansive interpretation, more aggressive in comparison to his gentle and intricate modern classical piano and string repertoire. It fuses the post rock intensity and epic feel of bands like Mogwai and Sigur Ros, while the energetic live drums and piano loops bring to mind DJ Shadow. 

Completing the three-track release is the stunning remix by currently one of the UK’s most exciting electronic bands Vessels, who put their gritty and glitchy spin on the original à la Jon Hopkins, Rival Consoles and Kiasmos.

Fia Fiell is the moniker of Carolyn Schofield, who channels her virtuosic skill as a pianist and refined understanding of timbre into visceral electronic music that evades the posthumous toe-tag of “ambient”, creating broad and shifting soundscapes that retract and expand, from tender melodies to dense walls of sound.  "Ladder" opens proceedings: the watery figures dance like sunbeams reflected by the sea, the parts forming together like shimmering threads intertwined into a gorgeous filigree.

Thessaloniki-based composer, producer and multi-instrumentalist Manos Milonakis debuts on piano and coffee records with "The Seagull", a synopsis of his original score for Russian dramatist Anton Chekhov’s play of the same name, directed by Yiannis Paraskevopoulos for theatres of Greece and Romania.

The first musical lines of this project were drawn while in Romania, where together with the director, Milonakis travelled to prepare a show for Craiova’s National Theatre. The post-communist atmosphere, the humid streets, the sense of modern balkan darkness contrasting with incredibly vivid painted walls, strong flavors, smells, and amazingly passionate and friendly people would be decoded into music for the classic Russian play. The thirteen tracks in "The Seagull" blend melancholic piano melodies, soaring strings, gentle electronics, atmospheric haze, and evocative soundscapes. Sometimes discreet and others at the forefront of a strong narrative, each piece pours itself into the other like communicating vessels, coexisting with romantic encounters, philosophical arguments, family quarrels and a series of unanticipated arrivals and departures. Piece by piece, Milonakis masterfully introduces us into a world of frustrated lives and unrequited love.

Even though "The Seagull" was composed in 2015, a year before his previous release, "Festen", it took Milonakis significantly more time to decide it was the right moment to release it. “During these years and working in-between other projects”, he says, “I sometimes looked back in my hardrives and these recordings always resonated inside my heart. Having performed the music extensively in concerts was also revealing an urge to me: that I should probably share this stuff with the world”. This brought him to Denmark, where he had the pleasure to have some piano re-recorded and the full album freshly re-mixed by Ed Carlsen at his studio in Kongens Lyngby.

"The Seagull" releases on 13 March 2020 via piano and coffee records worldwide, and is available on limited edition CD and digital formats, with artwork by London-based illustrator Jordan Amy Lee.

Manos Milonakis - Treplev's Song

Yes, I know that I had just had an exclusive track premiere a day ago, but I've got another one for you, kids, and this one is worth celebrating! As you have already read in the title of this writeup, today, I am sharing a track by Sebastian Plano and Maarten Vos who have paired for a self-release they simply titled "&." Although I can already see how the title will bring the duo unforeseen trouble [electronic media unfriendly to ampersands or HTML escape codes will struggle with the name!], the music will bring trouble to your unprotected heart, piercing its walls with the emotive, sensitive, and poignant. Argentinian cellist, composer, and producer, Sebastian Plano, is, of course, no stranger to my ears. I was very much impressed with his collaboration on Everything (Erased Tapes, 2017) with Ben Lukas Boysen; and mesmerized with his Merkury KX release of Verve in 2019. Dutch Maarten Vos is also a cellist, composer, and producer, whom I have only heard of via his collaboration with Michel Banabila on Home (Tapu, 2017). For their collaborative debut, the duo put together seven pieces after a week-long recording session, "which transcends from cello duos to counterposed piano melodies, synthesizers, and electronics." This beautifully stammering piece resolves into a liquid bliss.
