Ten years on from the release of his highly acclaimed, award-winning debut LP ‘Emulation’, Mefjus shares five of the album’s biggest tracks with his label-mates at Critical for the 2024 remix treatment.

A landmark album in the genealogy of drum & bass music, the hard, heavy and supremely technical tracks gathered together for the original ’Emulation’ set a new standard in sound design and pushed the conventions of the genre to the very limit.

With Dimension and SkankandBass forging the label into a small outlet known for big quality, Regal Records has earned an ever growing fanbase. One of the biggest years yet for Regal, 2012 has seen the label go from strength to strength. Hooked by releases such as ‘Tape Marauders’ by Hyroglifics, the huge Ad Gannon EP, along with dancefloor weapons by Dub Motion, ravers across the scene are noticing an imprint doing huge things. Gaining support from the likes of Crissy Criss, Cyantific, Matrix & Futurebound, London Elektricity, AMC, and many others, Regal Records continues to punch well above its weight.

Now Regal continue on their mission to release quality music with a brand new release from British producer Chords. One of 2012’s most promising new talents, Chords burst onto the scene after remixing Cyantifics’s ‘Don’t Follow’ on Hospitality Festival Drum & Bass. Quickly gaining the attention of the mighty Matrix, the finalist of the BBC’s Young Musician of the Year soon found himself releasing on one of the pillars of DnB itself, Metro Recordings. After releasing the sumptuous ‘Hypnotize / Follow You’ and more recently the lush ‘Video Soul / Fly’ on Metro, Chords is set to make his debut release on Regal. Featuring the soulful sounds of ‘In Lightspeed’ and the dancefloor funk of ‘By Design’, this one will be dominating 2013.

Already known for his soulful, funk infused productions, Chords kicks things off in style with ‘In Lightspeed’. After a mesmerizing introduction that features a hypnotizing vocal, warm textured synths and bags of atmosphere, ‘In Lightspeed” evolves into a slice of stunning DnB. Smooth synth sounds, sharp stabs, intricate percussion and a dreamy vocal all work together to put ‘In Lightspeed’ in a class of its own.

Insidious: Proceeding in a gradual, subtle way, but with harmful effects.
So the dictionary tells us, but if the word insidious bears any relation to Rene LaVice’s rise to drum & bass prominence it’s that it is the exact opposite. Smashing his way to the top of the game within a year with nothing but a hugely positive effect, Rene LaVice is poised to unleash his debut album following just a handful of releases.

It would be foolish to think that Rene LaVice and his music weren’t ready for such a bold step, though. Last year saw his tunes find a home on the playlists of tastemakers such as Annie Mac, Nick Grimshaw and MistaJam, become highlights in the sets of Ram boss Andy C amongst many of his D&B peers, top the sales charts amidst fierce competition from all manner of bass music and storm into Mixmag’s top 50 tracks of the year. 

How exactly, you may ask, has a relatively new artist from Canada managed to achieve all of this in 2012? Your first listen to his debut album ‘Insidious’ will undoubtedly answer that.

From the opening bars of ‘So Inspired To Fail’ to the closing notes of ‘Absolute Monster’ this LP is really a lesson in creating beautifully crafted drum & bass. ‘Perfect World’ and ‘This Is Conflict’ are prime examples of Rene’s ability to put together tracks that will undoubtedly smash dancefloors.

Throughout ‘Insidious’ has nothing but breezy production and genuine soul to offer the listener. ‘The Way You Love Me’ draws you in with subtle vocal hooks and chest-warming Reeses, ‘Rude Selection’ sees Rene drop the tempo and team up with Trinity Chris for a crunching, grinding slice of hip hop heavy bass music, while the album’s title track is a dizzying blend of sultry vocals and Prototype Years style drum & bass. 
Drawing together classic sounds and giving them a fresh lease of life is Rene LaVice’s mainstay, crafting drum & bass that manages to feel nostalgic, infused with timeless, classic intent, but always up to date with fresh production values. Rene LaVice is a producer who wears his influences on his musical sleeve and always brings them together in a new and exciting way, and his debut album is a testament to that incredible talent.
