So NT1927 are a new signing to Atlantic and although I just discovered them in the past couple months I'm a huge fan of their sound - if you dig The Killers you're gonna like these guys, a lot.  Tegan and Sara need no introduction and I've always loved their sound so I was really excited when I got asked to do this remix.  The lyrics really struck a chord with me and I imagine they will with anyone who's ever been in a relationship that's gone south fast, aka everyone.  The song pretty much perfectly captures that feeling of wishing things had stayed good...but also wondering how soon it can all just be over and done with and when you should change your netflix password.  

One of the things that struck me as really cool about the original is how there's an A/B verse section split between NT1927 and Tegan and Sara, so I decided to play off that idea for the remix.  I tried to keep the verses minimal and let the lyrics shine through, while adding a bit of an 80s/retro touch.  The hook goes full on future tropical indie house (new genre coming to Beatport soon I swear) and brings the energy up for club play.

It was a casual Saturday afternoon at a friends place; A random Spotify playlist had assumed the roll as the DJ for the night, which eventually cued up the Jose Gonzalez cover of “Heartbeats” (a song originally performed by the Knife). I couldn’t remember the last time I’d heard the song but was immediately consumed by feelings of nostalgia, as memories from my freshmen year in university hijacked my imagination. I found myself re-listening to the song over and over again, until coming to the (what should have been obvious) conclusion to create my own cover.

I laid down the acoustic guitars, along with some simple drums - just enough to get a general idea of how this was going to play out for me. A good friend of mine (who performs under the name Lani Rose) was available to track some demo vocals; what he sent back blew me away. 

I didn’t want the cover to be too similar to the Jose rendition, so I was sure to add a taste of Fairlane throughout the record. After wrapping up the first final version, I had the pleasure of previewing what Lani and I had done to another close friend (who’d admitted to sharing a similar obsession with the Jose cover in the past). As the demo ended, I turned around in my chair to gauge any reaction, only to discover my friend sitting in silence with his mouth agape. “That was special” he said “and that’s all I’m gonna say”.

This Heartbeats cover will always hold a place in my heart. To me, it represents an acknowledgment to the time my journey has taken to get to where I am - from the last time I heard the original 8 years ago, to the first time I heard it again on that random Saturday evening, and everything else in between.
