It was 2017 when Pierre-Alexandre Busson decided to add a new dimension to his already multi-faceted musical identity. After arriving home from Italy, having taken part in a unique sound installation at the 57th Venice Biennale, the producer felt compelled to begin something new. Breaking away from his otherwise tried and tested methods of making music, the Rheims-born sound craftsman recorded a collection of completely improvised pieces that featured a dark, melancholic edge which strayed from the French electro he was highly regarded for. It was with CHLOÉ’s imprint Lumière Noire, a label that is all about defying classification, that the project found an open ear. And, alas, the DESTIINO project was born. 

Pierre is not only affiliated with music for the dancefloors, but is an established and respected producer for movies and television, alongside running his own photography project, with a published photo book and exhibition on his work in Lebanon. The artwork for the album and singles will all be based on a photo from his own collection.

Since those formative recordings, Pierre-Alexandre Busson made his debut on Lumière Noire with two EPs, titled ‘Afsila’ (2021), followed by his debut album titled ‘Destiino’ (2021). After the release of his first teaser EP ‘Imagery’ released on the 22nd November, another single from his forthcoming album will drop in February, before the full album titled ‘ii’ out on both vinyl and digital release in March 2025.

Sapphist Eye’s initiation into Paris’ queer party scene was the catalyst for her now budding career in electronic dance. After gaining the attention of CHLOE in 2023, her track ‘Exist Everywhere’ was selected to feature on lesbian collective Barbi(e)turix’s 2nd compilation. After this breakthrough, fellow French imprint Les Disques du Lobby came calling before arriving on Lumière Noire with her debut solo EP, ‘Another Side’ in 2024.

As an advocate for the wonderfully contemporary beats that flow through the Parisian underground, she’s engaged in feminist and queer causes, and is part of L’Agence du Lobby, a booking agency who represent queer, drag and collectives in music.

Tightly interlaced but still curiously vast, Sapphist Eye opens her woozy, solo EP ‘Mutate+Back’ with ‘Hanging In A Path’. Somewhat perplexing but expertly executed, its unconventional approach is fully realised with the arrival of a pitched up vocal sample that puffs in time to a gurgling crescendo of coarsely chopped effects comprising a series of chimes, hisses and hums.

‘Hanging In A Path’ (Dub Version) wobbles into the mix, it does so in unassuming carefree fashion. The polished edge that gives the original its glossy finish has been replaced by a strung-out chorus of sonics that tumble and fumble aside flanging, piercing overtones and distorted vocal components.

A robotic ambience fuels the up-tempo ‘Searching’. Pulsing from the beginning with an assertive clap and kick combo, a wave of blurry overtones soon mists over what went before, adding an abstract edge to its house foundations, making for a slight deviation from the krauthouse stylings which largely make up the EP.

‘Whole Anger’ is a special track as the chants used were recorded during a women’s rights protest on the 8th March in Paris. The track is a cavernous blend of percussive elements bang aside cannons of reverberation and a rush of voices. Before long, the melody breaks to unveil a sleek electro pattern that fuses with this wall of chattering to bring about the latter stages of the track.

A long-time collaborator of CHLOE’s, Yuksek revives his mysterious Destiino alias to collaborate with her on ‘Venere’. Feverish and choppy from the get-go, it features far-out melodics that click together to produce a wonderfully weird amalgamation of hissing synths, chunky bass notes, and a series of mystifying effects that snap and pop across its stuttering, robotic soundscape.

(uk)Sounding the promise of long days ahead and late nights to follow with its opening salvos, Chloé’s The Dawn heralds the return of the Paris-based DJ and producer, and a new dawn in her ever-evolving career.

Indeed, The Dawn is her inaugural release on her own label Lumière Noire, which she recently set up as a separate entity and of course for her infamous Rex Club night, which has since 2014 become a bit of a club house for Parisian electronic music fans. Operating Lumière Noire as a fully-fledged label will enable Chloé to release a new full-length album (of which The Dawn is the lead single) sometime in the next few months.

Over the ten-plus minutes of The Dawn, a spoken-word track languishes over melodic washes in a dramatic progression that evokes a novel, or noir-ish cinema – a method that the producer has taken a shine to since Take Care. This cultivation of the strange and the beautiful has become her calling card, putting her in a league with likeminded producers, who take the basic tenets of techno and inject them with their own singular poetic visions. A visual-arts analogue could be found in Noémie Goudal’s photographs which grace the EP’s cover as they will Chloé’s upcoming releases.

This stirring aesthetic gives The Dawn a slightly cerebral dimension, which is taken to new depths by Dixon’s stubbornly technoid remix. The Berlin-based whiz kid, who has over the last few years risen to the top of the international electronic music scene, inverts Chloé’s light-drenched, full-bodied production into a tense, captivating chiaroscuro.

The Dawn can also be explored via the “Chloé * IRCAM V2: The Dawn Interactive Mix” installation, which embodies Chloé’s music as an intimate interactive experience. It is one of the first offshoots of a constantly mutating collaboration between Chloé and the IRCAM Institution (www.ircam.fr/) that began in 2015.

In  just  a  year  of  existence,  Chloé’s  Lumière  Noire  has  brought  emerging  artists  and  promising  newcomers  together  –  and  this  first  compilation  of  13  brand  new  tracks  expands  the  roster,  exposing  the  label’s  eclectic  vision  in  full  daylight.  When  Chloé  talks  about  her  label,  she  puts  forward  the  fundamental  values  that  informed  her  own  musical  journey,  her  trust  in  her  own  musical  taste  –  and,  of  course,  the  predominance  of  human  relationships:  “I  followed  my  bliss  and  only  commissioned  tracks  from  artists  that  I  respect  and  whose  music  I  love.  That  to  me  is  Lumière  Noire’s  musical  palette.”With  this  13-track,  unmixed  compilation,  Chloé  makes  a  case  for  a  label  aesthetic  that  is  based  in  open-mindedness.  Familiar,  elemental  Lumière  Noire  artists  are  represented,  as  are  new  faces,  producing  a  kind  of  group  photo  presaging  what’s  next  for  the  fledgling  label.  Lyon’s  Markus  Gibb  leads  the  track  listing  with  Kuru  with  a  deep  chiaroscuro  matching  the  label’s  ethos,  followed  by  other  mainstays  Il  Est  Vilaine’s  Farenheit  451,  which  evokes  Ray  Bradbury’s  retro-dystopic  angst  with  the  band’s  usual  electro-pop  elegance.  Sutja  Gutierrez,  who  released  in  debut  EP,  The  Legend  of  Time  on  Lumière  Noire  in  April,  pursues  his  electro-Shamanism  with  the  ceremonial  Allodoxaphobia,  while  Iñigo  Vontier  (whose  EP  Aluxes  came  out  on  the  label  in  late  2017)  brings  his  Contra  project  online  with  track  Taurus,  a  further  development  in  voodoo  house.  Elsewhere,  Suuns  lead  singer  Ben  Shemie,  who  lent  his  fascinating  art-rock  croon  to  Recall,  a  single  from  Chloé’s  Endless  Revisions  LP,  contributes  A  Million  Kinds,  a  synthy,  psych-pop  debut  that  is  as  brilliant  as  it  is  surprising.  On  to  the  freshman  class:  Dutch  producer  Drvg  Cvltvre  (who  gets  personal  kudos  from  Chloé  with  each  new  12”)  brings  the  uncompromising  dark  electro  of  his  hypnotic  and  claustrophobic  Last  Rites.  Jonathan  Fitoussi’s  airy,  minimalistic  Cercles  Polaires  brings  the  respite  of  his  recent  Versatile  Espaces  Timbrés  LP  (a  collaboration  with  Clemens  Hourrières):  “I  met  him  at  Xavier  Veilhan’s  Studio  Venezia  at  the  Venice  Biennale.  He’s  a  great  guy,  and  his  universe  is  unique,”  says  Chloé.  Benedikt  Frey’s  deep  techno  track  Iaon,  is  on  par  with  his  smash  2017  album,  Artificial,  out  on  ESP  Institute.    First-timers  are  also  part  of  the  recruits:  Bajram  Bili  with  the  ten  cerebral  minutes  of  Restart,  Théo  Muller  with  the  ultra-deep  Douce  Transe,  and  Lumi,  a  Basque  band  that  fuses  electronic  sounds  with  acoustic  instruments,  brings  the  compilation  to  a  close  with  a  track  commissioned  by  Chloé,  who  met  them  at  a  festival.  These  audacious  choices  are  anchored  down  with  the  likes  of  Permanent  Vacation  pioneer  Lauer’s  hooky,  80s-infused  Pythor  (“Just  like  him,  I  was  a  resident  of  the  Robert  Johnson,  and  he  was  a  guest  of  mine  at  one  of  my  Lumière  Noire  nights  at  the  Rex.  He  is  one  of  these  people  whose  music  I  highly  appreciate);  Aergeworc  &  Franck  Agrario,  half  of  English  duo  Swayzak  David  Brown’s  project,  weaves  an  ethno*  mood  into  Grace’s  techno.  Bringing  together  different  generations,  genres,  and  styles?  That  may  not  necessarily  be  Chloé’s  MO.  She  invokes  a  more  arbitrary,  personal  logic:  “I  like  to  mix  of-the-moment  tracks  and  more  timeless  one,  but  the  rule  is  above  all  ‘do  I  love  this  or  not?’.  That  was  my  ethos  when  I  started  Lumière  Noire.”  In  that  way,  the  label  is  definitely  in  keeping  with  its  time...
