«Since I was little, I’ve been immersed in the culture of the Mexican Aztecs and Mayas. So, logically, I’m attracted to magic and spells. Mixing both in my music is the perfect combination of my tastes and my roots». Seen from Europe, Iñigo Vontier’s assertion can seem puzzling, but from the point of view of a Guadalajaran DJ-producer, this blending of genres makes all sorts of sense, expressing the dreams of peoples steeped in mystique, whose rites have provided refuge and hope through generations.
As soon as the needle hits Aluxes («it’s the name of forest spirits, and it’s pronounced ‘aloo-chess’,» according to Iñigo) a channel to occult forces does seem to open up. The EP’s title track, with its sparse, unfathomable voices and its bouncing, metered rhythm, is like a spell operating its serene power over the listener.
The spirits are at time tricksters: the facetious Patito and its stubborn metallic rhythm brings back Vontier’s precious dark disco essence, which mellows out what would be more overly-serious Western electronic music: «I’m proud to help the Mexican Dance Music scene make its international mark, along with Rebolledo and others. My personal contribution, along with my role as a label head, is to bring this sound to the world. Musically speaking, that means that our productions are increasingly influenced by Latino – and sometimes Arabic – sounds, which makes them more diverse and eclectic».
Detlef Weinrich’s, a member of post-rock band Kreidler and a resident of Düsseldorf’s Salon des Amateurs, tasks his Tolouse Low Trax side project with elevating Macaco to the temporal dimension of a fevered nightclub, with a remix that is lightyears from weekender minimal techno, and closer to Dopplereffekt. Finally, with its haunting incantations and ritualistic percussion, Temazcal brings the EPs ritual to a close. The spellbinding suite, with a musicality and an originality which is all too rare on the electronic scene, prompts the artist to muse: «perhaps dance music sometimes lacks magic, but I’m sure there’s many dancefloors where we can feel it».

Iñigo Vontier - Macaco

Following the critically acclaimed release of Golden Bug’s V.I.C.T.O.R. album last year, La Belle Records tap into some of their favourite contemporary artists and ask them for remixes. Il Est Vilaine, Red Axes, Destino, Thomass Jackson, Danny Daze, Strapontin and more all serve up sizzling results in return. The original album was a vital and broad affair which touched on everything from adult disco to psyche-funk, abstract atmospheres to slow-fi techno. It was another highlight in the Paris man’s esteemed discography.

Glasgow producer and Optimo trax artist MR TC, who also runs the Night of the Jaguar parties and has released on this label before, then gets spooky and unsettling on his dark and broody re-rub of ‘Un Paradis Artificiel’ feat. Julienne Dessagne.

This is a fantastic package that marries together electronic music, dub, freaky synth work and post punk guitars into eleven menacing and meaningful tracks.

Acid Pauli - BLD Remixes B 

Acid Pauli’s album BLD dropped last year and was a superb reminder of Martin Gretschmann’s unique place within the electronic music.
Breathing musicality and adventurousness into everything that he does, the album covered a number of moods and emotions, from dystopian carnivalesque vibes to moments of high intensity, through to deep melancholia and synth laden ambience.

Following on from the “A” remix package, “B” brings another huge selection of producers into the fray to reinterpret the originals.

First up, Hamburg hero Stimming works over 'Amadou' - flipping the original, into a techy bomb. A thick kick underpins a shuffling, off kilter rhythm and beautifully treated melodics. Stimming’s feel for gently pushing the dancefloor into new places shines through.

'René' is reworked by Roman Flügel, the Ongaku/Klang/Playhouse boss whose influence on the European electronic music scene has been immense. Always willing to experiment, 'René' is the perfect canvas - arpeggiated blips and beeps echo primitive electronic explorations by the likes of Francis Bebey, and a huge subby kick drum take this track into space.

Axel Boman sets to work on 'Jeanne', locking into his signature groovy, tribal approach to working the dancefloor. The Swedish producer adds dubby elements, an irresistible percussion track and disruptive, random sounds to the thick, heady mix.

Dutch wunderkind Satori tackles 'Jorge' - twisting the original into a psychedelic groover that finds room for backwards vocals, marimba-like melodies, fat basslines and shuffling breakbeats.

Lastly, label co-founder Nico Stojan remixes 'Verbos', and finds a way to twist it into an energetic yet deep dancefloor burner.

The shop was busy and crowded, the place was heaving on a Saturday afternoon, it always was. Furka had become the destination of choice for many a man in the know, capitalism was king here and the money poured from the pockets of the hard working people into the hands of the greedy. The warehouse sat on the outskirts of town and promised worldly "essentials" and the latest trends, it was all manufactured crap but they still bought the life out of it. 

E&A Rueger feature on a new compilation from Eclect Rec, the release is a wild assortment of experimental electronics. The dancefloor remains the underlying focus throughout but this is far from a dance album.

Duro’s co-founder Moises Ramirez aka Moisees is back with a new EP that follows up his excellent remix of Mijo’s “THXTASY” and his last release, Train Station Philosophy. Remixes from Middle Sky Boom and Younger Than Me complete this standout 20th package.

Mexico City artist Moisees has been building up a fine catalogue of edgy, machine made disco tracks that are full of alluring darkness. He’s garnered international press support as a result, as well as becoming someone DJ’s looking for an edge often reach for.

Opener ‘Midnight Raider’ is perfectly named: a late night tune with a sneaking sense of movement that roams through a desolate cityscape. Freaky synths and filtered sounds are unusual and draw you in. His other original is the brilliantly original ‘The Death of Hope’, a psyched-out deep techno cut with disco colour and astral synths. It’s a track that slithers ever deeper down the rabbit hole and melts your mind with a hypnotic lead synth sound that sounds like little else.

Middle Sky Boom is label boss of Unterman and based in Tel-Aviv. His music has come on Rotten City Records and Days of Being Wild and here he flips ‘Midnight Raider’ into a spooky, mid-tempo chugger with freaky vocals and glassy synths. It’s brilliantly weird and wonderful.

Remixing ‘The Death of Hope’ is Younger Than Me from Milan, an associate of Tusk Wax, Bordello A Parigi and XXX. His vital version echoes with a late night mystery. Phased bass and percolating riffs ride up and down the scale as icy hi hats add to the infectious groove. Weatherall et al will surely approve.

These are four fresh, unusual tracks that bring plenty of new ideas to the alternative
disco world.
