Space… The final wasteland for the rich and entitled. A playground for the opulent. A fantasy for the 99.9 percent. A constant source of inspiration for artists. Artists like AZO.

Making her debut on Biologic Records, complete with a remix from Steffi, here we find the talented Belgian artist strapping up her rocket boosters for a four-track trip into infinity. It takes in influences from dark matter to Detroit, black holes to Brussels.

‘Aurora Space Station’ is a beautiful rave-inspired breakbeat floatation piece that sets the scene, poking fun at the mega-rich who can afford to seriously entertain the idea of leaving this planet for dust. More thrust is added by the deep space electro of Steffi’s thumping remix. Both have more power than all the fossil fuel Bezos and Branson have burnt in the last 10 years.

Deeper into the cosmos we probe…. ‘Neptunian Sea’ takes off from Chicago, fuelled on an intoxicating combo of acid and Italo. ‘Love Bus’ brings the anti-gravity heat with a heavy, hip-writhing nod to the jazz spirit of UR’s Galaxy 2 Galaxy movements.

We might not be able to afford a holiday in space, but we can afford great art like this. The dancefloor has always been the most effective place for teleportation. Ready for take off?

They eyed them up from the other side of the room, looking down their noses at them and silently judging. There was a clear divide between these two groups, motivated by an unfounded idea of superiority; but one was no better than the other. It was clear that one side had no interest in getting to know the other, they'd already categorised them and labelled them as unworthy of their attention and there was little that could change their mind. 

Play Pal are back with another instalment of their Pals VA series, their seventh to be exact. Centred around hypnotic, guitar-infused wave and moody raw electronics, this new outing features music from artists based all over the world. There's collaborations from label head Teniente Castillo alongside Amarcord, Play Pal affiliates Mike Sacchetti and Ivan De La Rouch, and Belly Dance Services boss Nick Hanzo with A-Tweed, rounded off with solo contributions from Javier Ferreira, Ulises Arrieta and Sylphomatic, all making for another package of dystopian delights from the Madrid-based label.

Swedish producer Ivan Berggren, aka Paresse, returns to Eskimo Recordings with the 'Animachine' EP, 4 brand new tracks of beautiful electronica that joins the dots between the cosmic disco of his fellow Scandinavian producers, the early Trance sound of Frankfurt labels like Eye Q and the even earlier machine music of bands like Kraftwerk.

It is the latter band whose philosophical fingerprints, at least, are most visibly present on this new EP that was inspired by Berggren's wrestling with the age-old question of just what we are, simply biological machines running on electrical impulses and chemical reactions, or vessels filled with some ineffable spirit.

What that translates to in the recording studio is four stunning new tracks that kicks off with Where East Meets West, its pulsating synth arpeggios and relentless beat, accompanied by stirring Vangelis like melodies that rise and fall as rave stabs and echoes of lost voices create an air of faded grandeur. Upping the tempo the EP's second track, Meat Robots, an underground house number whose acid bass lines and ricocheting percussion, will have even assembly line robots jacking as it builds to a hypnotic conclusion. 

If that's helped you build up a very un-robot like sweat then the glacial Journey of the Heart slows things right down, taking us deeper into ambient house territory, its chugging beat, pulsing synths and piano chords sparkling like the first frost catching the sun. Concluding the EP we have Anima, a stately 100bpm coda to the EP filled with disorientating overdriven synths that spiral in and out as the track marches on in robotic lockstep, a heady combination of early Trance, ambient and Italo sounds, perfect to crash out on a bean bag to in the back room of a club and debate the nature of humanity to with a perfect stranger.

With releases on labels like Eskimo, Frau Blau and Correspondant, and collaborations with artists such as Titiyo, Paresse's small but perfectly formed discography that's draw upon the sounds of electronica, dub, Italo disco its easy toes why his records have found favour with DJs from across the musical spectrum from Yuksek and Jamie Jones to The Organism and Phillipi & Rodrigo onto the likes of Purple Disco Machine and Ewan Pearson.

Perdí La Luz is the project of Alfredo Lazaro from Washington. HIs sound combines the raw energy of techno, post punk and EBM, influenced by early 80s electronic pioneers such as DAF, Front 242 and Liaisons Dangereuses. With previous releases on Unknown To The Unknown’s Soft Computing, Plains Archaic and Heist Mode, he makes his Death Decay Magic debut with Cruel Fate, a four song EP with remixes by Jennifer Touch and Black Light Smoke.

Hailing from Saint Brieuc, France, Estuary Tapes kicks off its story by bringing to life a bold eleven-track compilation. On board: Tabensi, Théo Muller, and Transe Ar Gwez, the guides of the journey, plus Los Pashminas, A-Tweed (SXDNS222), Oltrefuturo, Kendu Bari, Shjva, XCI, Isabel Del Bosco, and Orphic – a true constellation of young and talented producers from various corners of this unfair and doomed little planet of ours who spared no efforts to bring the best of their games for the compilation.

From dusk till dawn, from darkness to light, the release encompasses many a genre and aims nothing but to please the fans of high-quality underground electronic music out there.

Premiered here, the stunning closing theme of the VA comes from the mastermind of the creative Portuguese virtuoso XCI. Named after the Greek god of fire, who is best known for defying his Olympian counterparts by stealing fire from them and giving it to humanity in the form of technology, knowledge, and more generally civilization, “Prometheus” comes packed with a magnificent cosmic and starry aura, as if its mesmerising synth layers were paying a tribute to the beautiful sky of Athens in 3000 BCE.

The collaborative project from Vincent Lemieux and Guillaume Coutu-Dumont, Flabbergast, returns this March with a new EP, entitled ‘Default Mode Network’ and coming via Swiss imprint Adam’s Bite.
Vincent Lemieux is a staple of the Montreal, Canada underground and a widely beloved DJ for his impeccable technique and selections, he’s also offered up productions on the Studio Club and DISDAT labels and a collaborative EP alongside Ohm Hourani for Jigit and co-founding the Musique Risquée alongside Akufen, Deadbeat and Stephen Beaupré.
Guillaume Coutu-Dumont, a fellow Montrealer has long been a prized producer for his unique spin on micro house and deep house music with his music finding a home on the likes of Mule Musiq, Meander and Dokutoku among others. In 2015 the two joined forces for their Flabbergast debut on Circus Company, have gone on to release with Yoyaku and Copier/Coller, and here makes a triumphant return for Switzerland’s Adam’s Bite with four fresh original cuts.
Opening the EP is the playful ‘Peppermint Poddle’, fuelled by oscillating synth tones, twitchy percussion and saturated bass alongside a spoken word vocal. ‘Manger Du Bon Manger’ then shifts focus to cinematic organ lines, jazzy drums and a snaking bass groove throughout.
‘Mou D’état’ kicks off the B-side and sees the duo dive deeper via ethereal atmospherics, their signature wonky, mind bending synths and an amalgamation of processed vocal murmurs. Lastly ‘Dans L’oeil’ sees César Merveille join the party, the trio working collectively to create a unique slice of percussion fueled microhouse with intricately intertwined organic percussion, dubby synth flutters, cinematic pads and pulsating subs.

Flowers From The Ashes is the latest multi-artist project to bear the acclaimed Stroboscopic Artefacts imprimatur. There is a sensibility of decadence and corroded grandeur etched within its four album sides, reminding us that historically “decadent” times have nonetheless resulted in some of the boldest acts of individual and collective creativity. Like the "floral" theme that has remained a consistent feature of S.A.’s graphic presentation, the music here equally presents fragility and intensity in a way that really drives home this visual metaphor for good, while still holding out the promise that similar creations will be seeded in the near future.

Though many of the artists involved have set of residence outside of their native Italy, all contribute here to make a captivating portrait of a shared spirit and cultural memory. The album opens with 'Errori', deceptively fragile sonic ornaments crafted and suspended in space by Blackest Ever Black artist Silvia Kastel. This is followed closely by the mellifluous, warming glow of percussionist Andrea Belfi’s 'Spitting & Skytouching', and then by the resolute electric bass patterns and luminous fog of 'Lux et Sonus', from Eeri label head Marco Shuttle. Hospital Productions alumnus Ninos du Brasil open the B-side with a similarly dense, amorphous construction built from tribalistic chants and rhythmic patterns, to be followed by Mannequin label boss Alessandro Adriani’s 'You Will Not Be There For The End', showcasing his distinctive take on the "paranoiac breakdance" aesthetic of classic EBM. S.A. veteran Chevel rounds out the first record in the program by interlacing several percolating synth lines together into a richly conversational piece.

The journey continues with 'Starving The Mind', an undulating mini-epic from S.A. founder Lucy that is animated by his signature balance of seductiveness and concentration. The bright, biting acid synth tones of 'PRV-HH3-X', by Lory D, then takes a sharp right turn into an invisible metropolis ruled by reflective high fashion and hidden intrigue. The imposing architecture of 'Virgo Rebellion', designed by modular synth futurist Caterina Barbieri, acts as an excellent companion piece, and sets up the closing '4G' from Spazio Disponibile co-founder Neel - a crepuscular serenade that accurately sums up much of the foregoing activity.
