Requiem for the Dead

How can something invisible cause such scars?

How can it seep into every corner of the world? Spawn unending media coverage, mask statesmen, cripple multinationals .. the assault is obvious and dramatic. But those wounds will heal and fade and be forgotten soon enough. Others will always be scars.

The father gurgling and mewling a last goodbye through a ventilator, bloated, scared on the tablet screen, looking at a thumbnail of his family's wracking anguish. The nurse holding the tablet, hand trembling with emotion, tears running down her visor.

The grandmother too nervous to open the windows, bereft of allowable family, lonely and afraid. There are tins for a day or so, maybe more. The boiler has gone out. He used to know how to fix it, but he has passed. There is no-one to ask, no-one to tell. Her life has shrunk into something too small to be of interest or significance - to her or anyone else. The TV tells her the same message, same story, same instructions a hundred different ways. How to deal away hope, comfort, will.

The daughter in the crematorium, watching the coffin disappear into the furnace, her body sobbing and jolting, aching to be hugged. Her mother was worth a thousand times more than the cold, alien dozen mumbling hymns yards apart. The insult and the anger multiplied by grief.

The dog, pawing at her master's shin, whining gently. Tired and emaciated she will not leave him and rests her head at his feet until he is discovered days later.

Let's remember the many like these. When we feel indignant, deprived, inconvenienced, pray for those who left scars.

This is it! 10 story sections, 10 releases of varying lengths. 

One interesting note about these last two pieces of music: The first one (Twelve Speaks Again) is about the newest thing I've written, and the second one (Home) is one of the oldest things included in the entire Time Machine Chronicles, dating from about December of 2000. I remember the date well, because I was hiking to the bottom of the Grand Canyon with my pops. The idea that music preserves memory has been a huge part of this project.

Thanks for coming along on the journey, it's been a blast.
