As times seem to get rougher and tougher in political terms in the urban jungles of the world, conscious music and cultural activism in general gain in importance. Message music to uplift the people is essential in society. On this mission, Lion’s Den has teamed up with the upcoming producer Blue Hill outta Athens, Greece. A heavy riddim, somewhere between jungle and dub, outta his mixing lab was given to the mighty Lutan Fyah from Jamaica to create a powerful anthem, calling for action in times of political turmoil - the youths need to “Get Out” of their mental and physical state of badness.
Another vocal on the same riddim was recorded with the Lion’s Den MCs Kali Green and konTa outta Berlin, Germany. This wicked combination hits with the same amount of lyrical fire - this time in english and german - and adds to the rebellious mood. A call to “Start A Revolution” and to fight the system full of trickery, downpression and exploitation. But this is only half of the musical story to be told...
Lutan Fyah’s piercing voice and melodies were given to five producers to come up with three strong remixes inna different style: For the first one the US dubstep pioneer Roommate joined forces with the head of the Lion’s Den, Ras Lion outta Ber- lin, Germany, to mix it up inna pumping dub / steppaz fashion. The second remix leaves no doubt about message music reach- ing the clubs - no matter if ‘uptown’ or ‘downtown’: A heavy banger somewhere on the jungle tip, with a west coast breeze, by a brand new collaboration project between US bass music legends Noah D and No Thing (together with Roommate he forms Babylon System) called Lost City JNGL. Last but not least, the third one was done by the great jungle producer FLeCk outta Athens, Greece, and hits hard with some break madness and extra deep bass.
The whole EP was transferred to 1⁄2 inch Tape for extra analogue warmth, mastered with care and pressed on high quality limited and hand-numbered 180g vinyl by Star Delta / Delta Disc, UK. It is also digitally available.

With the antipodean spring having finally sprung, the Red Robin posse have hatched a fresh 12” that’s been incubating over the southern winter.

Featuring two ‘new’ veteran artistes, as well as a couple of more familiar collaborators, RR03 is bound to be another highly-collectable edition to their growing catalog.

Side A opens with Midnight Riders on a classic piece of Naram digi roots – this time lamenting the quick temper of his 'Jealous Woman' in the dance. However there’s two sides to every coin, so part two sees legendary UK sheejay Ranking Ann construct a compelling argument that it’s the 'Jealous Man' who presents the bigger problem!

On the flip Naram explores an earlier rub-a-dub sound, giving a solid foundation for roots icon Earl Cunningham to issue a decree against gun violence on 'War in the City'. Raggamuffin Junior Cat then hammers home the message with a relentlessly militant deejay cut, 'Stand Tall Ghetto Youth'.

As per usual, both sides feature killer versions from Naram and have been carefully mastered to tape by Pole. And, also as usual, they’re strictly limited pressings - so don’t sleep.

There's so much dope music out there combining elements of hip hop with different Jamaican styles and it's not really surprising as these are two musical genres that are intrinsically linked, sharing rhythmical roots in Africa and both heavily influenced by American Blues, Jazz and Soul. 

Kool Herc took the Jamaican sound system concept to New York in the late 70s and helped create hip hop, often from funk records with lyrics that echoed the revolutionary message of rasta. 

The creative recycling process of dub music can be closely compared with the tradition of sampling, and emceeing and rapping aren't really so different from a dancehall dj toasting. 

Significantly,both styles reflect a culture that is all about rising above oppression and sufferation.

Livity’s obsession with reggae music began when he moved to Dunedin to begin a Fine Arts degree. He started attending reggae dancehall nights at Bath Street, saying ‘I was that annoying kid asking the DJs for track names’.

Soon after this his vinyl addiction began. He was invited by General Dread from Renegade Sound System to present a show on Radio One. Not long after he started playing at Bath Street’s weekly reggae nights.

In 2006 Livity supported Luciano and met Messenjah from Reality Chant Productions backstage, the day before moving back to Christchurch. This lead to joining Messenjah and Nazarite on the Dubwize show on a regular basis and doing gigs as a crew. He has now been running the show solo for 6 years.

He is a regular fixture on Bass Factory and Chief Remedy Sound Systems, has supported many internationals and played countless festivals and local gigs.

Livity loves all reggae from militant Rasta roots to the slackest dancehall.

He says, 'I wanted to create a mix that reflects the diversity of reggae music that I love. I find mixtapes hard as there are so many songs I want to squeeze in, so I used tunes that I've played in recent DJ sets and tried to create something with flow while ripping through some different styles. Respect to all crew nationwide pushing the sound in their own ways, I hope you enjoy the mix'.
