ℹ️ | Bay 6 Recordings present the fourth edition of their compilation series Back to Bay 6, Vol.4. Much like the  previous records, the label aims to introduce fresh talent alongside their existent roster. Artists such as  Artsea, Beeson, Natus, and vocalist Aleya Mae contribute tracks alongside long-standing Bay 6 artists like  Colossus and Fearbace, as well as recent signees Option and AUDBL. The result is a rich take on drum &  bass, where artists are given the freedom to build upon the foundations of the genre.

Artsea's 'Summer's End' opens the record. Serenity is the atmosphere here, as the track leads with a gentle  piano riff. Modulated pads and driving percussion play out in the background, recalling the rise and fall of  waves crashing against the rocks. 

Colossus and Aleya Mae contribute 'Flight Patterns'. Technical drum programming, spherical synth  patterns and deep bass lines create a stirring base from which Aleya Mae delivers a soaring vocal full of extended harmonies. Texturally, the track is detailed, a dense combination of sounds designed to evoke  the deepest feelings. 

Elsewhere, AUDBL's 'Night’s Embrace' features undulating motifs and finely layered melody work lower in  the mix; Beeson's 'Cindy Stop It' is a minimal symphony defined by a gripping intro, and 'Find My Way' sees  Fearbace and Natus deliver a poignant take on drum & bass. 

Option's 'Prying Eyes' closes out the record. Perhaps the most club-ready track on the compilation, it's skittering drums take hold on the brain like a liquid symbiote, while nimble melodies and cavernous bass add the decoration.

Handra join forces with the talented Mortem here and from the opening salvo of primeval drums, arpeggiated bass and stirring opaque pads, the track shapes into a dark shadowy piece of contemporary DNB. Tight rounded kick, chiseled snare hits and titanium tinted high hats provide the ingredients for the geometrically precise beats. A fierce, neolithic, axe weighted and cavernous bass, hammers through the track with the supporting blips and bleeps adding some svelte texturing and balance to the mix for a glacial, cold edginess that perforates the entire arrangement for a real steam roller of a track. Utter badness.

Following his widely appraised ‘Shadows and Silhouettes’ LP, Hugh Hardie’s latest offering is his most unique to date. During isolation, the Bristol-based producer set himself a challenge to write a new track from scratch every day for 7 days birthing the ‘7 Tunes In 7 Days’ project. For what would be a daunting process for many creatives, Hugh explained that the time limit “made it impossible to procrastinate or overthink decisions” - allowing his ideas to come to fruition more fluidly. Continuing to showcase his sonic diversity, ‘7 Tunes In 7 Days’ is home to soulful liquid funk, sub-heavy new wave jungle and minimal yet deep drum & bass bangers.

Setting the bar high from the offset, the week began with the creation of ‘Back & Forth’ which sees melancholic arpeggios and captivating pad hits rest delicately above signature rolling breakbeats. The EP varies between old school jungle influences on ‘Klaxon’ and soothing vocal chops contrasting coherently with gated synths as that much-loved Hospital loungecore style shines through in Day 4’s ‘CNK’.

Teaming up with the acclaimed duo Pola & Bryson for Day 6, ‘Bending Light’ consists of elegant flourishes and heartfelt strings. For the final day, Hugh upped the challenge by deciding to not use any loops or samples, instead making use of his hardware synths and microphone to record the purrs and meows of his cat Gretchen to create pads and a bass line for the aptly titled, ‘Gretchen Bass’. This techy stepper is a perfect round off to a successful week of music-making. As Hugh said himself - “Sometimes all you need is a microphone and a cat”.

Hugh Hardie’s ‘7 Tunes In 7 Days’ project displays the versatility of his production and creative ability. Making the most of his time in isolation, Hugh attempted to demonstrate the numerous benefits of staying at home during these difficult times, when the world needs music more than ever.
