HARDER... DARKER... STRONGER... was the tag-line and “Disconnect/Reconnect”, the third studio album from The Japanese Popstars, garnered plenty of critical praise and won the hearts and minds of many forward-thinking music fans throughout 2013, proving to be a big success for John Digweed’s Bedrock label. So fittingly, it falls to Gary Curran and Gareth Donoghue to kick-off the 2014 release schedule with a timely revisit to three of the album’s boldest tracks, with superb heavy-duty remixes from London based Sharooz and Barcelona’s Coyu.

The mighty and melodic “Vision” and insanely noisy “Heavy Hitter” battle it out to see who can become Techno champion of the world, a duel that can only result in them both sharing the podium, being so distinctly different in attitude and being unforgettably memorable. It was the original version of “Matter Of Time” (featuring Green Velvet on vocals) that took the 2012 IMS by storm, catching the ears of Laurent Garnier, Francois K, Carl Cox and John Digweed, who promptly signed TJP to Bedrock. Now, for 2014, it reappears with a suitably massive Coyu Remix. With his Suara label currently one of the most prominent imprints in the world of Techno, Coyu’s pedigree is of the highest order and he stands as one of the most charted artists in Resident Advisor's history. Sharooz (owner of La Bombe), whose recent tracks on GND Records have been flying high, is no slouch either! His decidedly twisted remix of “Heavy Hitter” is impressive in the extreme and will no doubt be causing chaos everywhere it lands.

There can be no doubt, that this next salvo from The Japanese Popstars is destined to be heard in the dirtiest of dark rooms and at the biggest nocturnal festival shows worldwide, throughout 2014 and beyond. These boys are on fire and have their gaze fixed firmly on the future.

The Italian wonder kid Samuele Sartini teamed up with Brit songstress Amanda Wilson, and the results are nothing short of stellar.
These two have turned in an infectious house tune that masterfully samples Kings Of Tomorrow’s seminal ‘Finally’ (which is 100% cleared).
It’s got a groovy production and a classic vocal so we’re confident this is going to become a Summer sing-a-long.
Dutch duo Redondo prove they are still right on the money with an awesome remix for ‘About U’.
Feel-good house music that has got Ibiza hit written all over it.

SCALES - Loves Got Me High (Sonny Fodera Remix)

In a world where the creative arts are fluid, influencing each other via film, music and theatre, the world of Desaturate brings a passion for the creative process matched by a dedication to musical craft. As the lines between art forms become blurred, "The Unholy Mountain" draws inspiration from the world of cinema and musical storytelling.

A man with a rich history within the underground music scene, the Progress Inn name saw Janko Dragovic partnered with Igor Kadic in a string of impressive releases allied to the industry's most respected imprints. Thus, Vapour, Stripped and Temporum provide the backdrop for Serbian production know-how and a platform for DJ performances across Europe and their adopted Perth home on south-western Australian coast.

Through Desaturate, success has continued for Dragovic as work for Sudbeat, Sound Avenue and Balkan Connection testifies, often through the collaborative partnership formed with French dance music legend Rick Pier O'Neil. Now returning to Particles after the success of the "Spirals" EP with O'Neil, Desaturate embarks upon a new musical chapter.

Influenced by the 1973 film, "The Holy Mountain" and accompanied by exquisite art from the hand of Ben Mautner, Desaturate draws inspiration from the, "fascinating work of art" directed by Alejandro Jodorowsky. Filled with religious imagery and stunning visual cinematography, Desaturate's "The Unholy Mountain" is a musical vignette of the highest order through a sweeping cinematic narrative that paints a vivid aural picture.

Opening track "Detract" is a warm, bouncing, bass-fuelled gem that is enhanced by a striking percussive cadence and richly textured pads that pulse gently throughout the eight-minute work. Reverb and delay drenched chords play their part in a brooding and hypnotic piece that evolves elegantly from the third movement.

"Frostbite" maintains the hypnotic flow of its predecessor as metronomic groove quickly finds its feet amidst a melange of evocative chord progressions and sumptuous pads. A delicious riff adds aural bite from the mid-point onwards in a work that revels in strong rhythmic accent.

Characterised by a strong, thumping beat, final track, "Unholy" develops with impressive guile and subtlety through its side-chained pads and acid-tinged riff, building in momentum to a superb zenith. Effects layers redolent in filtered and flanged delays swim across the stereo spectrum to supply additional depth in a work of skill and poise.

Scaling unprecedented heights at the summit of "The Unholy Mountain", Desaturate has further enhanced his reputation at the high altar of underground dance music. "We began in a fairytale and we came to life, but is this life reality? No, it is a film."

As Particles looked up at "The Unholy Mountain" in May 2016, Desaturate provided a musical triptych that showcased impressive production talents. As we return to the EP, three new interpretations from the Netherlands, Belarus and Argentina now illuminate.

Superstar DJ and producer, Alex O'Rion has a portfolio to rival the biggest modern producers. At the cutting edge of the underground and mainstream dance scene, the Dutch artist's cross-genre appeal has seen him acquire a century of production credits for industry behemoth, Black Hole Recordings. Indeed, a collection of stellar remixes for the likes of Ferry Corsten, Richard Durand and Cosmic Gate have enhanced a glowing reputation as has his role as resident DJ on the "In Search of Sunrise" tour with Durand in 2014. A DJ with an ability to satiate crowds across the globe, recent production work for Mango Alley, Spring Tube and Nueva has continued an impressive output. Now, a single Particles remix of Somersault's "Space is Big" in November 2015, is accompanied by a compelling rework of "Detract". Using an intricately glitched percussive groove as a backdrop, further rhythmic foundations are laid by gated white noise pad effects. Intelligently reworking Desaturate's elements in a masterful new direction, analogue melody and filtered bass line provide a sumptuous groove-oriented interpretation.

Mickhail Akulich needs no introduction to the Particles faithful with his work under the Michael A production moniker. An artist who has grown in stature and reputation over the course of 2016, his prolific output signed to a plethora of high-profile imprints has seen him hit the catalogues of Balkan Connection, Soundteller and Superordinate, with his Genesis Music imprint a hugely successful outlet for his own work and that of like-minded peers. A regular on the Particles roster since an appearance on the "Fall 2013" compilation, the original "Behind the Moon" EP has been a notable highlight. Returning to the label for the first time since February's contribution to "Winter Particles 2016", the Michael A remix pays tribute to Desaturate's "Frostbite" as the running bass groove is used as a basis for a raft of additional production material to shine from Akulich's production arsenal. A pulsating groove and strong kick are accompanied by layered pads that pump in unison before a rich melodic melange and ethereal vocals create a masterful mid-point denouement. Epic dance floor credentials are then brought fully to the fore in the third movement with the resultant work sure to find much success.

From the Argentinean capital, Buenos Aries resident, Sebastian Busto, has carved out a considerable niche for his unique brand of underground dance music. Renowned for creating "dreamy atmospheres through elegant and melodic progressive house", Busto has found his classical music training, invaluable. Having already made an impact as a rock musician with multiple tours and albums to his name, a move to dance music has garnered similar success. A catalogue of work signed to the likes of MNL, OLD SQL and Massive Harmony Records, have established a reputation, cemented by September 2016's three-track "Nature" EP for Particles. Returning to the label to remix Desaturate, the Sebastian Busto interpretation of "Unholy" retains melodic themes resonant in the original and its deep running bass line. Adding a collage of harmonious layers via rippling, delay-filled arpeggio, strong kick and off-beat claps, Busto's evolving, elegant work is a classy production of technique and skill.

As Alex O'Rion, Michael A and Sebastian Busto revisit "The Unholy Mountain", Desaturate still reigns supreme from the summit.

Marking an impressive EP debut with a trio of outstanding tracks, Desaturate hit the Proton Music catalogues in January 2018 with "Wanderer". As Proton now returns to the EP, remixes from Greek and Norwegian talents provide a new outlook.

DJ and producer, Simos Tagias, has risen rapidly through the ranks of the underground dance fraternity to reach the upper echelons with veritable ease. An artist who has performed regularly across Europe and throughout his native Greece with spell-binding sets, Tagias' production career has seen him feature on a host of impressive imprints. A regular on the likes of Stellar Fountain, Balkan Connection and Movement Recordings, a remix of Michael and Levan and Stiven Rivic for Hernan Cattaneo's "Sudbeats 3" compilation was a notable highlight.

A regular on both the Particles and Proton Music imprints, the "Airlock" EP for the latter was a standout moment in early 2017 while remixes of Tim Penner, Luc Angenehm and Soulwerk illustrated another side of his production character. The Simos Tagias remix thus builds on the rhythmic mastery of "Wanderer" by taking the core components of Desaturate's track and reworking them into a new piece chock full of dancefloor dynamism bristling with melodic energy and fizzing percussion. Evolving effortlessly a driving bassline and acetylene lead pierce the mid-range, combined with shimmering chords to create a very special new interpretation.

Espen Gulbrandsen has witnessed a long association with electronic music. With his 'Espen' contraction, the Norwegian producer found success in the early noughties under the Recluse production moniker, with several appearances on Armin Van Buuren's "A State of Trance" compilations. Working under his own name from 2007, a double-century of production credits sit proudly next to the Espen name with regular appearances for such high-profile imprints as Looq, Silk Music and Stellar Fountain. Indeed, a remix of Oliver Lieb's "Wasp-17b" in July 2018 marked an impressive return to the label.

A pair of remixes for Particles in 2016 and 2017 saw reworkings of Omar El Gamal's "Escoz Me" and Rick Pier O'Neil and Desaturate's "Cursed", so it is therefore an honour to welcome Espen to Proton Music to remix Desaturate's solo work. Founded upon a strong, dominant kick and ticking hi-hat groove, a rich and sustained bass note provides the backdrop for a series of melodic phrases to rise up out of the rhythmic framework in rippling glory. Beautifully textured pads create a new sonic architecture that intelligently uses the themes inherent in Desaturate's original to dramatic effect.

A pair of remixes from Simos Tagias and Espen see Desaturate chart a bright new path in "Wanderer".
