Picadilly`s review:

Return of the mighty Jack Pattern on the highly collectable Lustapoderosa label. A lot like the world we currently occupy, Jack Pattern's sound heads darker on this release, recalling distant memories of dystopian nuclear wastelands, Total Recall-esque interplanetary life and the rise of AI machines. With a hefty collection of vintage drum boxes and weighty analogue synthesizers, the EP throbs and hums in all the right places, with UnknownMix singer Magda Vogel's vocals really doing the track on "Codex". Fans of that dark, electroid sound from Borft, Frak and Tillander will love this, as will general lovers of EBM and new beat. It's discordant but harmonious, jagged and mechanical but rhythmic and enveloping. It's absolutely brilliant but definitely not for the faint hearted!

The compilation series is planned to continue on an annual basis with a revolving cast of bands and musicians, and with a festival to celebrate the launch of each album. This year's two-day festival will be held at Kulturni Centar Grad, on March 13 and 14, 2019.

Ashinoa is a krautrock dementia that fans of the genre will recognize. An artistic atavism in the footsteps of the post-Stockhausen generation, a kind of round table of geniuses Klaus Dinger (Kraftwerk, Neu!), Edgar Froese (Tangerine Dream), Schulze (Ash Ra Tempel)… but also a kosmische musik of modern times, with a touch of electronic influences in the most experimental way. Part of the collective Misère Records from Lyon, which also includes the bands Abschaum (who released its first album in late 2017 on Macadam Mambo) and Pratos, Ashinoa started at the end of 2015 and occupes a special place in the Lyon alternative scene. So it’s a real pleasure to welcome on board a band with such qualities from Macadam Mambo’s hometown. Don’t miss the trip!

Spearheaded by James Dean Brown (also known from Perlon’s Narcotic Syntax) and Victor Sol, and featuring other rotating members, Hypnobeat is a true product of the open-ended spirit of DIY music that proliferated in the 1980s. The prescient project championed deft, machine-powered rhythm programming as its modus operandi long before the practice would become a dominant global cultural form. Since Hypnobeat was revived in 2012 with Helena Hauff joining JDB on stage for improvised live performances based on one 707 and three 808s, there have been a string of archival releases shining a light on the early and more recently recorded works of this forward-thinking venture.

This latest collection for Artificial Dance comprises three freshly unearthed iterations. Long-form A-side track “Polychrome Desert” is a pure percussive exercise, programmed and recorded by JDB in 1986 with a chain of three 808s filling out a stereo panorama. The intention was to create a pure, meditative rhythm drawing on African influences and reinterpreted through what was then the music technology of the future. “Spies In Malaysia” is a live recording from a concert Hypnobeat performed in 1985. Its lurid melodic passages and crunchy percussive blasts formed the closing track of the set, which was met with rapturous response. Recorded in the same year, “Sumatra Railway” was the product of an impromptu session between JDB and Victor Sol. The song finds the pair exploring a more shadowy, surf-inspired sound, laden with echo and freewheeling through seven minutes of sun-kissed, subtly tropical subversion.

With each successive release, the plot surrounding Hypnobeat thickens in a tangle of 1/4” jack cables and ancient effect pedals. From its shifting line-up to the diverse sonic repertoire, it remains one of the wondrous plants of German electronic music in the pre-techno era.

There was a frosty feeling in the air this evening, a sense that something sinister was headed this way. The clocks had gone back the previous week and the days had got shorter and the nights considerably longer, bringing with them an overwhelming darkness. As the couple walked their normal path home they couldn't help but look over their shoulders. It was eerily silent, almost too silent. They hadn't seen a passer by since they began their journey. Perhaps it was just paranoia or their imagination working on overdrive, but it felt as though someone or something was lurking in the shadows...

Berlin-based imprint Ombra International's next V/A release welcomes five talented producers from around the world. International by name, international by nature. Exploring electronica, EBM, rock and everything in between, the release features offerings from Slovenia, Russia, Mexico, Belgium and our pick from Indonesian producer Arvin Fajar. Opener "In The Shadows" creeps along slowly, flaunting epic guitar twangs and weaving together influences from EBM, dark disco and new wave.

Cape Perpetua is a thing of beauty.

Sordid Sound System has taken his unique, raw, dub-infused sonic vision to a new level. With 'Cape Perpetua' we travel dem spaceways to a place that seems to grow more beautiful by the second; a textured, melodic, blissful interplanetary landscape where further words fail. From here Sascha Funke manages to take the controls and steer the mission on a futuristic space odyssey that's as urgent as it is blissful. Faint background signals of the original remain but are violently ejected from the airlock by the most synthetic, syncopated sounds the human ear has ever been exposed to. Flip over and we're straight into 'It's About Time'. This one is equally high octane ..... but this time of the afro-tinted psychedelic surf punk variety. If you aren't dancing to this you're probably dead. No rest for the wicked, however....because before we manage to get our precise bearings and a firm grasp of what just happened the acid techno space rock of 'Pneumonia Gulch' kicks in and takes us to places Hawkwind could only have dreamed of. Respite soon follows when the seductive voice of Eva Geist transports us to yet another beautiful paradise. Slowly it dawns on us that we're now in a dimension elsewhere entirely. Mind boggling. Nothing comes close. If you were to take a cockatil of mandrake, opium, LSD, ecstasy and a variety of amphetamines in the company of the heavenly host, the cosmic machine elves and a group of your best human friends with access to every instrument you ever wanted you would only know the half of it. This takes a very twisted, talented, mystic mind to come up with. I'm sure of it.

Let's open the doors to a whole new world.

PRÈMIÉRE: Sordid Sound System - See You On The Other Side Feat. Eva Geist [Invisible Inc]

Very pleased to showcase yet another Glasgow-based act for our third Invisible Inc digital-only release.

This time it's French duo Double Discone who upped sticks from Clermont-Ferrand in late 2016 and landed in Glasgow on their feet running. They've got no less than 23 shows under their belt since their debut at an Invisible Inc night in May 2018, with of these performed 100% analogue and live!

For this release the duo have produced four extra-terrestrial synthesizer jams that head into slightly more experimental territory than the electro disco sound they are known for.

All tracks are recorded live with no editing using an incredibly limited set-up that the two can control using just 7 channels on their recording desk: 2 x drums, 3 x synths, 1 x reverb, 1 x delay.

The resultant sound is a vintage drum machine + retro-synth audio odyssey reminiscent of John Carpenter, Vangelis and other such pioneers of the '80s. Perhaps not entirely surprising, it reminds us most of their French compatriot: the singular Jean-Michel Jarre.

On the other hand the music is undeniably contemporary. Perhaps that's unavoidable when its two creators are both still in their early 20s? Similarities can be heard to Nico Motte, Etienne Jaumet and their peers over the Channel as well as Invisible Inc label mates Spacerocks and Tim Love Lee.

The EP opens with 'Espionage Industriel' which sounds like an imaginary theme tune for a 70s TV crime thriller gone wrong in which the detectives have been spiked with acid. 'Temps Modernes' is a look at the future from the past, a cult sci-fi film spinning out on the inside of the eyelids. The EP's titular 'Géant de Fer' sounds like a lost Patrick Cowley track created for one of the many gay porn soundtracks he recorded in the 80s. 'Retour de Chasse' winds things up very nicely; elements of Cluster, Harmonia, Tangerine Dream come to the surface.....the echoes of these ripple outward and dissipate. A perfect ending.

Deep in the jungle, a small hut stood alone. It was the only place you'd find human life within these trees; a little known retreat for those who were in on the secret. Knowledge of it's existence spread by word of mouth but to be accepted you had to fit certain credentials, and you had to have the money to secure your spot. But for many it was worth the cost; you'd enter as one person and leave as another.

Label boss Kolomensky takes care of the next release on his own ИДА (IDA) imprint, exploring tribal rhythms across the EP. Title track 'Mystic Rush' comes with two versions - an electro tool and a 'disco-techno' cut - followed by another original in the form of 'Jungle Mirror' which takes things down a notch, introducing field recordings, spaced-out synths and percussion. Taking on remix duties are Lithuanian producer Roe Deers and Milan-based Tagliabue who morphs our pick into a psychedelic trip.

Making Covid-19-references when writing about popular culture can feel tiresome, living in the midst of it but let “Taken From A Fixed Point” by In Fields console you in this age of pandemic. This album pierces through you like sunbeams through the blinders of your quarantine-ridden apartments’ windows.
This isn’t In Fields first appearance on the label. In 2019 the artist released a collaboration with Golden bug and the exiting dynamics of that album resounds in this one. Though a little easier on the disco influences and a turn towards ambient, In Fields’ music is still “tension and release” dance music produced to perfection. In Fields characteristic sound contain contrasting elements where soft airy synth pads meet more frightening sounds dug up from somewhere deep and dark like in “Ghostnights”.
The tracks are dynamic where growing crescendos fast and suddenly fades out and you realize your mind have been focusing on a completely different part of the sound. Underneath those surprising elements sits a skeleton of well-sounding bones keeping the songs together tight and steady.
“Taken From A Fixed Point” is dance music for a dance floor in your head and triggers the muscle memory in quarantinenauts tired of hard lock-down. Though produced in a dark place, this album gives a somewhat positive vision of the future and life on the other side.
