Continental’s own A&R and multi-tasking, all around vibe meister DJ drops his debut solo single ‘Yeah!’, the send off to his no-nonsense DJ Tools series on the label.

Pioneer of the Parisian electronic scene, long relocated to London, Jerry Bouthier joins passionately the dots between music and fashion. The resident dj of east London’s infamous and now defunct BoomBox night knows a good tune when he hears one as his Continental label’s output testifies. His celebrated dj mixes for Kitsuné, Emerald & Doreen and his own Heart & Soul series are captivating labours of love that have attracted followers the world over. His stylish upbeat dj sets, blending genres and everything else fancied by this iconoclast Frenchman, never fail to rock the party from one continent to another. 

Also a sound-designer for fashion, his post-modern soundtracks for Vivienne Westwood – seamlessly merging classical into world music, punk into cosmic disco and more - have become the stuff of legends. In the studio, he produces as JBAG - his baleariscopop project with Andrea Gorgerino - together they’ve released 4 singles (inc. tropical anthem ‘Mogadisco’) and remixed Two Door Cinema Club, RÜFÜS, Ladyhawke… however it’s now time for a new recording chapter.

Jerry explains why he’s never released a record under his own name before:
“I come from a band/group background and as long as I wasn’t producing tunes strictly on my own, it didn’t seem fair to the other musicians involved in the creative process with me. That’s why we started JBAG for instance, the contribution of my musical sidekick Andrea Gorgerino is huge, it wouldn’t have made sense to release our stuff as Jerry Bouthier…
With time I’ve acquired confidence and felt I could produce some decent DJ tunes on my own, the kind of funky, housey stuff I play in my sets, nothing as musical or song-led as JBAG – it wouldn’t be fun to do the same thing. The idea of delivering a series of DJ Tools soon came to me, you know simple yet effective tracks that work the dancefloor well without fuss…
So I locked myself in the studio with a pile of old vinyl and came up with ‘Yeah!’, my first attempt at going back to house basics, fusing the soulful vocals of yesterday’s NYC dancefloors to the more underground, bassline vibe of London.”

On the remix front Barcelona duo Mordisco, takes the deep house route with a sensual chugger that’ll work its wonders in the early hours. Next another duo, Tel Aviv’s B1ZB1Z, turns out a dreamy disco reinterpretation spiced-up by a zest of indie.

Early 2013 brings new niceness from the Luv Shack. Head honcho, Simonlebon teams up with other Luv Shackers, and comes good with his own lick. Simonlebon has been providing quality through his DJ’ing and productions in recent years, good to see his name at the forefront of this release.

Buddies help out of course, and first to fly is the collab with Jakobin on ‘Can’t Do With You’. Warm and flowing, as is the norm with the LS crew through seven previously wonderful releases. Gentle builds entertain; claps with sunny smiles, and zestful and effective chords do the job admirable. Indeed, you just can’t do without this kind of groove in a set.

LeSale joins forces with Simonlebon for ‘So Many’. Punchier and throwing bigger hits, it’s destined to work up a sweat. Tasty piano, vocal treats, and a tip of the cap to dirty Detroit and classy Chicago do await the floor.

Flip it over on the 12” for ‘All I Can’ and you get more excellence this time containing the fine work of Lee Stevens aiding and abetting Simon. The most atmospheric track on the EP with subtle hints and notes of mystery and lost romance. A sexy and classy ‘bridge’ brings it all home again, and takes it a little further down the road. Gorgeous track!

Finally, Domino lends a helping hand with ’Second Chance’. Again, the mood is majestic and divine. True House music has always contained the pervading tone of life and love, and this is where Luv Shack always come through.

New and old, today and yesterday, you hear it in all their releases. Lights off and listen…and get lost.
