Cabaret Voltaire continue a series of releases on Mute with #8385 (Collected Works 1984-1985), out on 4 November 2013, more details at shop.cabaret-voltaire.net . #8385 is a six CD / four vinyl and two DVD box set.

#8385 (Collected Works 1983 - 1985) collates four of Cabaret Voltaire’s classic mid-period releases – remastered - on CD and vinyl - The Crackdown (1983), Micro-Phonies (1984), Drinking Gasoline (1985) and The Covenant, The Sword and the Arm of the Lord (1985) alongside a CD of Cabaret Voltaire’s 12” A's & B's from the period and a CD of 12 unreleased tracks entitled Earthshaker (The Lost Soundtrack).

DVD1, Cabaret Voltaire Live, collates two live shows, the Bedford Boys Club (18.08.84) and Hammersmith Palais (02.12.84) and DVD2 is the long awaited DVD release of Gasoline In Your Eye (1985), plus the four promotional videos from the time.

#8385 (Collected Works 1983 - 1985) also includes 40-page 12" booklet, notes about Earthshaker, an essay by Phil Barnes and new sleeve notes by Richard H. Kirk.

In Hour 2 we welcome Stephen Mallinder, a founding member of the hugely influential Cabaret Voltaire, who were pioneers in British experimental electronic, industrial music and visual art. He joins the Solid Steel 25th Anniversary celebrations and says of his mix ;

"A selection of music from peers, associates, co-conspirators, influences and baton-carriers. Starting with early head-turners This Heat (1978) and filtered  through the mix claps from composer Steve Reich (1972) onto post-punkers 23 Skidoo who I'd gigged and recorded with. 
A couple of FSOL tracks - covert Cabs somewhere in there and back up north to Sheffield's first real label WARP - the original Forgemasters reworked by bleepers Unique 3, The Black Dog posse and sonic provocateurs supreme, Autechre. An offering from my own Cabaret Voltaire - a rework of Yashar with the original 70 billion people sample. Keith le Blanc and co - Major Malfunction, classic tough electro, there's a whole history from Sugarhill to Tackhead in there. And rounded  off with our one-time co-conspiritor On-U's Adrian Sherwood's mix of metal-machiners Einstürzende Neubauten, complete with sniff sample.

All spiced with some period spoken word courtesy of Malcolm X, Mr Burroughs and JG Ballard stories and lovingly mixed by hand.

Solid Steel Radio Show 22/11/2013 Part 3 + 4 - Stephen Mallinder (Cabaret Voltaire)

“City Slab Horror” was released in 1985 on UK “Ink” records.  The LP though 2 years after “Since The Accident” continues to carry the torch illustrating the evolving transition between experimental structure and loops into the catchy pop hooks that would later define such releases as “Rotund For Success”.   This LP seems to move slightly into darker territory in general with it’s synth textures and slower tempo tracks but overall has a nice “continuation” feel from “Since The Accident” yet with obvious technological evolutions. The opening track “Spasm” drags the listener down the Sev Head mental rabbit hole instantly with it’s heady samples and eloquent drum machine rhythm.  “Spitoon Thud’ is a rambunctious affair with it’s cacophony of samples and percussion.  “4.W.D.” is a great sneak peak into the sound of the Sev Heads LPs to come with it’s treated vocals and pop hooks (perfected on later records such as “The Big Bigot”).  Next to last is the amazing “Goodbye Tonsils” track which is unstoppably catchy and features more of the creative use of samples which made this group so interesting. Though signed to 80’s industrial label icon Nettwerk in North America and often classified in the same vein, these records are not easily definable and actually have a life of their own. Though commonly misclassified with a lot of the late 80s industrial/goth scene (as well as touring with Skinny Puppy at one point), Severed Heads would be more accurately in good company with acts such as Cabaret Voltaire, early Coil, Chris & Cosey (and CTI), and the like.  Long out of print and a rarity on the collector’s market, it is presented with original repro jacket.   Remastered by Tom Ellard form the original source masters. Presented on high-quality 180gram heavyweight bone white vinyl. Features bonus LP insert compiled by Tom Ellard with ephemera from the time.  Limited Edition.

From a demo tape dated 1993, this was our shit kicking, rabble rousing, 'anthemic polemic' track which contributed to us briefly blagging a record deal.  Everything went tits up and unfortunately none of the vocal industrial EBM stuff ever made it out of the door (mea culpa, ok?).  Reza Udhin went on to successfully lead that charge on his own in Inertia.  Composed by Udhin/Luxmoore/Grey in lovely London, 1993.  Hope you enjoy it, some did back in the day...

Conflict

It all started with a fan letter…

“Hey Peter, just noticed you on a Rhys Chatham link. Just want to say I adore your work, I had a release on DFA recently, and they sent me some of your releases you did with Jonathan - so brilliant! I’ve had “Condo” track for a while, this completely catches my personality and when I feel disillusioned or need comfort, I always put this on, and it makes me feel good and strong.....i will stop gushing now! Thank you!

This was Peter’s reaction…

“I was quite flattered and was glad that ‘Condo’, one of my lesser-know tracks, was being appreciated. (I was also curious, because the most-viewed clip of ‘Condo’ on Youtube is actually a slowed down version: someone played the 12” 45rpm EP at 33 rpm. The result, however, is quite beautiful.)

I responded, said I hoped we could meet the next time I am in London, and Nik then suggested that she had a track that she was working on, and would I like to listen to it and possibly collaborate. I am always game for a new challenge, so I said sure and Nik sent an mp3.

I was immediately struck by the haunting and evocative nature of the track, the analog synths feeling fresh and familiar at the same time, the vocals having a primal quality of breath and phrasing. I loaded the track into Ableton and instinctively began recording some overdubs. I used analog (Prophet 5) and digital (Moog iPad) synths and a soprano saxophone. I then sent a mix to Nik.

Nik responded quite positively, and over the next few weeks we exchanged files back and forth, experimenting with different mixes and submixes. After a couple of dozen rough mixes, accompanied by email discussions among the three of us (Gabe had entered the process after the first few exchanges,) we settled on a final mix. Shortly after we had a final mix, I synchronized the track with a video that my partner Kit Fitzgerald was working on. This long extended shot fit the music perfectly, and we had a video for ‘Beachcombing’. (A still from this video serves as the artwork for the 12”.)

Initially, there was going to be a one-sided 12”, with ‘Beachcombing’ the only track. Nik then wrote to me that Dominic was also interested in working on a track, and would I be interested in working on a B-side with Dom. Of course, I readily agreed, and I received an mp3 of synth tracks. As previously, I began building up tracks, using the alto sax (rather than the sopranino used on Beachcombing) and the addition of a vintage Korg vocoder.

Once again, a series of file exchanges of mixes, submixes and discreet tracks ensued, and we finally settled on mix #26a. There is kind of a sweet quality which surprised the both of us.”

The result is before you now and forthcoming on Optimo Music. Modern collaborations with magical results!
