“Lychee is a thoughtful, bubbly raveworld fixture. A colorful and perpetually exploratory DJ and event organizer, they manifest underground energy with a magical, scintillating take on technoid psychedelia and relentless, meaningful inquiry. Lychee elegantly runs Spontaneous Affinity, a monthly mix and interview series, annual zine, and occasional event platform. A voracious reader and writer, they ever-thoughtfully explore human experience and interconnectedness through words, soundwaves, and the expansive, wobbling pulse of the dancefloor.” -words by Furtive

Lychee got their start as a radio DJ for WMFO, Tufts' college radio station, in 2007. Since starting to play out in 2012, they have played alongside artists like Takaaki Itoh, Objekt, Rrose, Legowelt, Claude Young, and Honey Soundsystem. Lychee got their start as a radio DJ for WMFO, Tufts’ college radio station, in 2007. In addition to playing out, Lychee has organized DJ/producer skillshare events, taught DJ workshops, and curated a speaker event about inclusivity in music technology.

Notes on the Mix //
As someone who often goes super conceptual with mixes, this one was a lot more about capturing a vibe - something sultry and slower-paced and weird that a few recent sets I heard from the dancefloor tapped into (@andrewakanbi and @DJTemporary closer at the last Groovy Groovy, @RussellELButler silky slow peak time moment at their all nighter at @Nowadaysnyc , @Physical-Therapy at Weird Science at @liveatmagickcity on a Sunday night). I felt kind of disconnected from my body and sense of sensuality this winter, those sets really helped bring me back to it compared to a lot of the faster, frenetic music I've been hearing out (not that I don't love that too). I don't think what I played here really matches the style or tempo of any of the sets I mentioned (and I still want to make a ~100 bpm set with a bunch of tracks played at the wrong speed someday, and almost went there for this, but it wasn't clicking for me this time), but it makes me want to move the way those sets made me want to move - slippery, playful, strange, emotional. Sort of a similar tone to my @JuanitasNYC mix back in November."

The first Patterns of Perception mix of 2023 comes from a luminous presence and dear friend of our collective - label head, mix series curator, promoter and esteemed selector Aaron J (@arn_j).

Over the years, a combination of passion, openness and tireless energy has seen Aaron become a trusted voice for experimental, boundary-pushing electronic music across both the US and the wider scene. 

Founded over eight years ago, Aaron’s much-loved platform @sure_thing is the embodiment of his forward-thinking curation and clarity of vision. Now based in Brooklyn, Sure Thing started as a series of parties in San Francisco before growing outward, later blossoming into a renowned mix series and record label. 

As a DJ, Aaron’s level of empathy and attention-to-detail are unmistakeable, allowing him to deeply connect with the dance floor no matter the context - layering, building and driving emotions ever onwards.

Aaron J's Patterns of Perception 106 is both radiant and personal - an idyllic snapshot of the perfect dance floor, glowing with wide-eyed energy. Pensive darkness simmers into hedonistic psychedelia. Intensity turns reflective. Endless rhythms vibrate and flare into nurturing light.

Influences: I'm most influenced and inspired by the hardworking people around me who help me believe in myself. Tom who runs Techno Queers has been my close techno companion since we were dubstep rave babies together, my Distrikt1 co-organizer Nerea (Ne/Re/A) helped me find a home in the techno community in New York, Aaron J of Sure Thing has been an inspiring, grounded, community-driven co-promoter in Boston and NY, my longtime friend Dennis (Parzer/Open Ground) in Boston was one of the first people I ever did DIY events with and I'll never forget what I learned from those, my partner Nathaniel (Blankstairs) whose intrinsic musical work ethic always motivates me to keep doing what I feel no matter what's happening in the "scene."

I'm also inspired by collectives and mix series like this one that keep their ear to the underground and highlight marginalized artists - Noctuary, Beyond/Below, DIESELcast, Abstract without Abstraction, TUF, Beyond/Below, Gays Hate Techno, Honey Soundsystem, Discwoman, Walking & Falling, Maneater, the list is huge and I'm sure I forgot some big ones.

Advice for the DJs, producers and artists of our community: Collaboration is important and I'm glad to have some great collaborators who both challenge and support me, but you should never feel like you need anyone else's permission to do anything! There are more resources and communities out there than ever to help support marginalized artists - if you have a dream project, don't be afraid to execute it on your own, without compromise (and ask for help when you need it).

Last year I made my first ever print zine for my own mix/interview series, and for some that would be a minor project, but for me it was huge proof to myself that I could pull together a new type of project if I set my mind to it - and finding the confidence to do that (and start my own series at all) took way longer than it probably should have.
