In his book 𝑇ℎ𝑒 𝑊𝑒𝑖𝑟𝑑 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝐸𝑒𝑟𝑖𝑒, Mark Fisher wrote about the two notions: While the weird is something present where it doesn’t belong—something from outside found on the inside—the eerie has to do specifically with outside space. Something is eerie when there are unanswered questions about agency: Who or what is responsible for the abandonment of this zone? Who or what is crying out in the distance?

Katharina Schmidt’s 𝑇𝑒𝑛𝑛𝑖𝑠 𝐶𝑜𝑢𝑟𝑡𝑠 𝑖𝑛 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝐻𝑎𝑙𝑓 𝐿𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑡, a single, longform track stretching to a near half hour, deftly captures this spatial sense of the eerie. The evolving drone is like coming upon a ruin, circling it, and being drawn inside. There are no surprises, no sudden horrors, just the strange pull of oscillating waveforms that paint a bleak yet soothing landscape.

In certain kinds of listeners, empty, abandoned spaces produce a pleasurable dejection. Maybe this is because spaces where human life is evacuated represent the end result of capital. (It seems to have withered away, but is in fact off to find another shell for its home.) What we’re left with is something new to inhabit, a new infrastructure for freedom. The subtle changes in Schmidt’s recording have less to do with melody and rhythm, more to do with accumulating color and texture of space. And so the half hour can feel like five minutes, or an eternity—time and scale exist differently here.

After years of playing drums and piano in various bands, Katharina Schmidt's solo work is influenced by indie, experimental, and improvised music. Exploring interests in storytelling, sonic topographies, and generative techniques, her music uses electronics, field recordings, and self-built interfaces alongside acoustic instruments. From sonifications to lullabies, her work is poised between formal experimentation and narratives cued by literature and pop culture, and can be heard in installations, film music, and radiophonic pieces, as well as releases on labels such as Flag Day Recordings, Slaapwel Records, and Focused Silence.

Katharina holds a master’s degree in Sound Studies from the Berlin University of the Arts and hosts resident shows at Cashmere Radio and SVS Radio.

Roxane Métayer is a French sound and visual artist now living in Brussels. She composes with the violin, primary wind instruments (ocarina and various flutes), archaic percussion and field recordings, fragmenting and reassembling them with synthetic effects. Nature becomes the backdrop of these wild soundscapes, populated by a phantasmagorical bestiary and an exuberant flora.

– Thanks for your contribution to our mix series, how did you prepare for this mix, and how would you describe the eventual result?

I prepared poorly, as the original mix was lost in an irretrievable data breach and I had to re-record. I don't really plan out mixes that much, which I think is pretty easy to hear in some of the transitions between records and moods. The mix is essentially a stack of records I put together from my shelves, in a rough order, which I then recorded in my living room when my housemates weren't in. It sort of traces the past year, records I have found or at least listened to the most.

– Is there a record in the mix that you associate with a special story?

Too many to mention really, but 'I Love the Night' by Blue Öyster Cult is probably the record in here that I have had the longest so brings with it the most nostalgia. I reckon I probably got that single when I was 18 and freshly arrived in Leeds, in one of the charity shops opposite my student accommodation.

– How do you dig for new music, and/or what kind of things arouse your interest in a record/music? 

Bandcamp for new stuff, which is actually more my cup of tea these days. Bit of Discogs of course, but even that I have calmed down with a bit. I prefer emailing people and trading without the formality (and cost implications) of Discogs. Tip offs from friends are also always welcomed.
As for what interests me in a record, the cover is important as a signifier - but in terms of sound I don't really have a criteria for what I like or don't like, just a sense of good or bad. I also really like some bad stuff too, and regularly confuse myself with the distinction.

– Are there three records you would take with you on a deserted island?

This is an absolutely impossible question really, but definitely the new Tara Clerkin Trio because I know I can listen to it repeatedly without the enjoyment fading. Station M.X.J.Y. by Maximum Joy possibly or To Each... by A Certain Ratio. Stuff that would send me into madness more quickly? Also not sure if you'd want to even take music you enjoy to a deserted island?

– Music bonds people. Any djs/shops/etc.. you would like to shout out? 

Again too many to name really, DJ-wise particularly because I am surrounded by so many good ones. Queenie, a friend from Leeds who has a show on Narr Radio is my most consistent listen and has amazing taste. Ben Wrong too, if you know you know. The people I live with and my/their friends and loved ones are a pretty talented bunch of people musically and otherwise, but there are too many to namedrop properly so I'll namedrop none of them. Its been nice to meet online friends that have become offline friends, like Caldu and Alex, who both know their beef from their eggs. The Little Record Shop in Hornsey is no secret really, but is the shop I try to get to most regularly. The owner David goes against the record store manager stereotype, and the digging is always productive.

Marathon DJ who is infamous for 8+ hours DJ sets from Sendai, Japan

Also owner of Ene Records, which has been at the forefront of the edgy underground label scene since 2009. A list of contributors including Prins Thomas, Eddie C, Man Power, Tiago, Lord of The Isles and homegrown Japanese talent such as The Backwoods, Cos Mes, and Sly Mongoose.

He is also 1/2 of Mascaras duo along with 5ive, destroying dance floors from the most intimate venues in Japan all the way to playing 10 hours set at Berlin's Cocktail D'Amore constantly over the years. 

Chida remains that rarest of phenomena, a performer who has managed to carve out a global DJIng schedule purely from the merits of his sheer skill behind the decks, and has been beloved from headz around the world for the last 30 years.

Puls Kluba is a mix serial of in-house artists, residents and contributing friends from all around. We're kicking off with our friend & resident Pepi Jogarde. 

Hailing from Croatia, Pepi juggles numerous roles with finesse - a radio presenter, DJ, promoter, organic winemaker and gourmet chef. He has won acclaim as an event coordinator for international music festivals in Tisno and as the host of the widely celebrated radioshow, Adriatic Coasting on yammatFM. He maintains residency at Peti Kupe in Croatia's capital, Zagreb, and was formerly known in the industry as Jogarde. With an illustrious DJ career spanning over two decades across Europe, Pepi has made his presence felt through club nights like Freilauf and collaborations such as forty:love. He has introduced audiences in Zagreb to top-tier acts, fostering a vibrant atmosphere fueled by inspiring music. He's had the privilege to host world-renowned disco and house aficionados like Hunee, Prins Thomas, Gerd Janson, Dixon, Ame, Metro Area, Antal, Jimi Jules, Roman Flügel, Henrik Schwarz, Boo Williams and many more. His rich musical background and unyielding enthusiasm have been defining factors in pushing boundaries and catapulting small underground clubs onto the global stage, emphasizing the importance of such intimate spaces. Pepi is renowned for his spellbinding seven-hour sets, seamlessly blending disco, house, techno, and dancefloor-friendly krautrock into a distinct, palpable, and somewhat melancholic sound. Today, he is considered by many as one of Croatia's finest DJs. Alexandre Wa (@alexandrewa) and I met a decade ago while studying history at college, we instantly shared a common interest about odd music, arts & silly memes. Years later, our paths crossed again as we’re now colleagues in the same research library. 

But enough chatter. Like me and even more, Alexandre is a massive krautrock enthusiast. That’s the reason I invited him to design a one-hour perilous but epic collage of motorik beats. Fasten your seat belt and get ready for a hallucinated ride on the autobahn !

Last year, he released the Insekt EP via Lolo Batten’s traverse imprint : an hypnotic 4-tracker blending IDM, ambient & bass, in which he showed particular skills for intricate microrhythms & crispy sound design.
