Disquiet Junto Project 0611: Music That Listens to Itself
The Assignment: Record a piece of music that repurposes itself as it proceeds.

I started very late and struggled a bit. Music that listens to itself gave me the idea of two synths playing the same sequences as an echo. I settled on for the preset "harmonic wind" on Aalto plugin by Madrona Labs. It didn't quite turn out right in my opinion. It would probably be quiet hard to meditate to it...Anyway, that's what I did this week.

In the hidden shadows of the night, under the soft veil of darkness, strange souls gather to share their secrets in hushed whispers. Their words dance through the air like wafts of mist, barely audible to the ears of the normal, but to those who are willing to listen.
They are lost in the folds of time, the keepers of the music that slumbers between the lines of thought. Their voices are like the whispering of the wind, the rustling of leaves in the forest at night. They whispering in the Dark.

Disquiet Junto Project 0618: Burying the Lede
The Assignment: Turn old news into new music.

I love reading very old news articles and noticing the ways life is still the same and the ways is very different. I wanted to find something from 100 years before I was born in The San Francisco Chronicle. My actual birthday (August 20th) was missing pages in the archive where I looked (newspapers.com) so I went with August 27th, 1884. I enjoyed the style of writing and storytelling about a dog that was addicted to opium. It carries echos of the present day anxiety about fentanyl but in other ways has no moral or backstory - just a snapshot of life.

To create this sonically, I used the "Matthew" voice from TTSmp3.com and played a bit with inserting commands for spacing or emphasis on particular words (always a challenge with text to speech). It worked OK though I think this piece might have been good with someone just reading it.

After creating an initial draft of the piece where I faded out the voice to let the music take over, I thought it would be more fun to disappear him into something that sounds more musical. So I auto-tuned the voice to try to keep it to F# and G. Then I exported the voice file and uploaded it into Holly+, Holly Herndon's AI tool for converting any audio file into her voice. This created something staticky and singsongy. I crossfaded this with the original voice and then chopped up some bits that worked rhythmically for the end.

Just because, I included a little sound design early on using a "Victorian street" simulation by Timbre on Freesound.org. I then processed it and played it backwards, as is *required* of any *real* sound art...

I finally finished another piece for the Clutha Project!

The Firth of Clyde has many types of sea birds and waders gracing its shores. I particularly love the antics of the Oystercatchers. These strikingly handsome birds with their beady red eyes strut and fret through the sands and rock pools as they prod and poke for their next meal. Their pace is slow, slow, quick quick, slow, as they dispute a scrap of ragworm, or chase off the smaller wading birds that get in their way. 

Ever watchful for disturbance or danger, they will instantly take off at the slightest provocation and wheel around in their groups, low over the water, before settling down again just a few yards away. 

I find them a perky and jolly sort of bird. I was watching them during a recent holiday in Berwick on Tweed, when i got the idea for this tune, which tries to capture their strutting and their sudden take-offs. Hopefully you will find it a jolly tune. Lord knows there's a current shortage of jollity in the world....

The guitar is real and played by me. The other instruments are virtual,  courtesy of Spitfire Audio Solstice Orchestra, and 8DIO Bazantar. Field recordings were taken by me at Berwick.
