From the very first track, it’s clear that Abby Echiverri’s debut, the “Ab Initio” EP is something different and rare: a polished and fresh interpretation of electronic music that incorporates classic electro squelches with intricate broken beats and expansive synthesizer zone-outs. Although this is her first EP, Abby has extensive history as a musician, sound engineer, DJ and VJ. Her current trajectory started early in childhood when she was classically trained in violin, flute, piano and vocals, cementing music as a part of her daily life. In high school she picked up turntables and began collecting records, eventually moving to NYC to study recording engineering and perform in post-punk bands, and became a regular at Wierd and The Bunker at a very young age. Since then, Echiverri has devoted her professional hours to engineering, maintaining, and manufacturing audio equipment for studios and clubs around the world. 

This record’s name “Ab Initio” means “from the beginning” or “from first principles”, invoking a propulsive leap into the future and also perhaps including an element of the eponymous. When we asked her to tell us more about the process of creating these hardware-based jams, Abby explained: “It all stems from my own experiences on the dancefloor and wanting to recreate that for other people. I want to make music that rewires the brain: music that is challenging, yet groovy... repetitive, yet evolving. An aural psychedelic. It's a lofty goal - I'm still working on it.” If Ab Initio is one of her first steps towards that goal then we can’t wait to see what happens next.

Fanzine Records proudly invites Nullptr, the alter ego of Eddie Symons, to the label. We are happy to have him on board to deliver our 10th vinyl release. The Brit has a career that spans over two decades, and he currently heads his own label [d]-tached, while co-promoting Cambridge-based electro night Motherchip Connexion.

The 5-track project kicks off with EP title sharing doozy "ALOPEX". The cut has an underlying dub sound and snappy claps and hits. A futuristic synth comes in that sounds like an emotional robot. It progresses nicely, with a broad range of elements including modulated toms and cymbals, before flipping into a revolving melody and fleeting flicks.

It is followed up with "CN2", and you can feel from the get-go a track with a little more Tabasco sauce. It has a bit more energy and that gutter sound, which is very prevalent. Again, the piece has those snappy electro hits and has this mischievous synth oscillating in the background. The main squeeze here though is the gutter.

Things seem to lighten up with "GeneRec" as it is introduced with an ethereal synth with some deep chords. Elements gradually get introduced as a bit more pace is added with the hats. It has subdued electro vibrations and swirling modulations. A bit of a deeper cut, it could be dropped at any early morning rave.

Before the finale, we have "Wake-Sleep" which has a very sweet synth hanging over it. It has high pitched keys and bumpy rolling beats. It has modulated plucking's which are nearly akin to an early beastie boys sound, it's texture with aspects being taken in and out.

Last, but certainly not least, we have "HEXQ". This cut has a hallowed synth that floats over the electro elements. It has a bit of everything, tinging hits, gutter vibrations, robotic stabs, and melancholic chords in-between that add a speckle of emotion. The synth gives it a down-tempo feel, but make no mistake, it's a layered production that any electro fan would dig.

THE EXPERIMENT 2

• Only six artists are part of this project.

• The identity of the artists involved in the project will remain private but they are free to reveal their identity after some time, even if we would prefer they didn’t.

• The artists involved in the project are not aware of the identity of the other artists. 

• During the following months we will periodically release 12 records: a very special 7" and 11 x 12" high qualty vinyl records

• Each record is a full album, a trip into the mind of the artist. There is no need for “perfected” tracks as this is not a collection of hits compiled on a 12” for massive sales. We asked each artist to work without any limitations or expectations that their previous "sound" might impose. In this way the artist may expose ones true self in the music or choose to demonstrate another side of their creative self.

MANIFESTO

1. We protect the creators and their independence from limits or rules imposed by the industry. 

2. We also protect the listener by offering the work of creators without any information that can alter or taint a pure listening experience.

3. Innovation is not the goal. The goal is to grant the creator and the listener total freedom. However, innovation can be a positive side-effect of creating in an environment of total freedom.

4. The use of words to describe or define music is a senseless task. Most of the time the intention of descriptive text is not to shed light on the work of the artist, but rather to serve as a promotional tool to drive sales and increase recognition. This often has the unfortunate result of limiting the creator and his work and we do not accept this imposition of the industry.

5.  Today, music or audio can be made available for listening without the need for explanatory text or any additional information about its creator.

6. This manifesto is created with the absolute certainty that there is an audience fully capable of discerning what music they want to acquire for their personal enjoyment without any superfluous contextual information other than what is provided by the music itself.

7. The music industry is based on labels, names, scenes and genres. The current boundaries are imposed by an industry that was created with the sole purpose of selling massive amounts of copies of an artist's work. Categorisation facilitates sales because it identifies or creates markets that can cater to a supply and demand model. It also imposes limits. Our goal is not to sell records and it is definitely not to enforce restraints. Our objective is to provide a safe, creative and completely anonymous platform for artists who want to share their work through a new paradigm. Selling records is a positive side-effect which ensures that the artist's music reaches the right ears.

“The Orion Years” finally reissued in vinyl format to celebrate its 25th Anniversary // Hybride Sentimento invite Thomas P. Heckmann with one of his most prolific alias; AGE. An ode to 60’s German sci-fi TV series: “Raumpatrouille Orion". Deluxe Edition with new artwork + 2 exclusive tracks, remastered by artist himself, at TROPE studio (Mainz,Germany). Back in 1994, an emulsion time for club oriented electronic music and while biggest techno hits were produced, a bunch of musicians started to explore machines in a non-conventional way, giving another smell to the appreaciation of this new form of music and production: independant, synthetic & futuristic(in the way of announcing something modern; out of humanity). We can point out just a few labels spreading this kind of 'avantgarde' electronic scene, Mille Plateaux, where "The Orion Years" has been published, was one of them. Some of those artists been highly appreaciated by the audience, basing their career on such abstract, melodic or not, experimental dance muzik, sometimes assisted by computers or sequencers, sometimes not.  

Thomas P. Heckmann took part to this specific orientation in a very subtle way as his career always been based on techno production. Aside the hits (at the time on top of big charts), Thomas Heckmann always played with outfits and aliases, permitting to spread secretly, more developed and less commercial, maybe more personnal productions through different labels often owned by himself. At the difference of all his productions, the first album under AGE moniker appears to (still) be an UFO of a generation and a career. Hybride Sentimento, in collaboration with Trope, is happy to reissue an album probably timeless for every aspects quoted, and for the reason to be privately worship since 1st meeting. Enjoy!
