Evolution grows into the darndest things. Babies who had the ability to recognise a smile on their mother’s face had higher probability to connect with their progenitors on a motion level, resulting in a higher chance to stay alive. The hominids who recognised shapes of both predators and preys between the dense forests lived longer to pass their genes to futures generations.

However, evolution recons that it is better for certain faculties to be developed in excess, than in scarcity. Various perceptive phenomena came as side effects from that excess, which is the case of the Apophenia, the recognition of patterns in random data. Maintaining a motional link with particular notions could also offer evolutive advantage, in a pre-scientific method world. Still, when cognitive fallacies get collective acceptance, they tend to grow stronger and stronger without any room for reasoning. Indeed, it is easier to grasp or chase a familiar concept than acquire updated information that ravishes lifelong personal beliefs. Our only tools to fight this tendency is patience and early education. And so, this is not meant to be a harsh criticism on post-truth, but an explicative sound narrative containing a factual core for why said fallacies and cognitive phenomena are formed.

Sankt returns to the fold with Inganical, his first full EP under the moniker. Over seven ever-morphing tracks, Sankt strains the organic and inorganic into various angular new forms.

Ghosts opens Inganical with eerie granular pads and takes shape quite quickly before bursting into a flurry of breaks. Combustor on the other hand instantly delivers industrial-grade footwork, groaning and moaning for every inch of its life. The title track expands on this formula in an equally agitated but more glitched-out way, shifting between thudding metallic clanks and more playful textural details. Those details come to the fore with disembodied voices floating in and out of the spectrum on the following Zwischen, the EP's fragile midpoint, which soon dissipates into feedback and unease.

Hydrangea picks up the pace again with its reframed EBM bassline and howling sirens, barreling relentlessly forward, only taking a fleeting pause at an uncanny waterfall. Continuing the onslaught, Goons squelches and squeaks, like a malfunctioning machine on its last legs, while Fogbow provides airy but cold breaks combined with a moody yet catchy bassline. At last S S S S (@gewissheit) supplies an additional scorching remix of Fowbow, sharpening its edges even more.

Fumbata Phiri (he/him) is the project of the first-generation Malawian American musician, producer, and artist Anderson Chimutu, based in the post-industrial town of South Bend, Indiana (US). Focused on both analog and digital electronic music, Fumbata Phiri integrates the use of drum machines with granular synthesis, early influences drawn from the time spent growing up in Chicago and Detroit where he was exposed to the music of local legendary acts, as well as an eye on the representation of his African heritage.

His first outing is represented by Decoherence, released last year on the Hungarian label Exiles, which hosted an articulate, theoretical investigation on the concept of decoherence stemming from observations on the interaction between electrical signals in the quantum world. The record was followed up first by Equipoise, licensed by the UK-based outcome Hard Return, and then very recently in 2021 by Actuation, on Eternal Search. While the former reflects on concepts such as balance, machine-machine interaction, and stability by means of glitchy sound sketches and conceptual rhythmic deconstruction, the latter offers techno compositions intersecting with reggae and conga influences to craft minimalistic, obscure dance anthems.

Today, we're glad to have Fumbata Phiri on board who figures as the 84th entry in our GUESTMIX series. The 53-minutes long contribution opens up with an unreleased live set spanning almost two-thirds of the mix which then flows in a lively selection of tracks produced by cutting-edge artists such as Ekoplekz, Rawaat, and many more.
