Michael Hutchence was an Australian musician, singer-songwriter, and actor who co-founded the rock band INXS and was its lead singer and lyricist from 1977 until his death.
SnakeHips’n’LizardLips is my tribute to the man and to the group of fine musicians that were INXS, done the Ma9Na way. Being a musician in Australia, their early songs were very much a part of my own career, and our paths crossed several times throughout the 80’s, with some being not so obvious until later in my life. I tell a simple story that is as much about the private man that not many knew, acknowledging the vibe and fun that Michael and INXS took to the world and leaving an endearing musical footnote in history. Ma9Na.

Hallo zusammen.... Ich darf euch heute eine "Überbrückungsmusik" präsentieren, bestehend aus nur einem Titel (Chicago Blues, entstanden in den frühen 80 iger mit unserer damaligen Band Hydra), aber recht unterschiedlichen Interpretationen. Da die Idee von mir stammt, habe ich irgendwann begonnen, das Stück wieder aufleben zu lassen, mit den Möglichkeiten, die wir damals leider noch nicht hatten. Der Track Chicago Blues ist in meinem kleinen Home Studio entstanden und alles wurde von mir selber eingespielt, gemischt und finalisiert. Das Stück Chicago Blues (Olaf Svendson Master ) hat die weiteste Reise hinter sich und wurde in Spanien durch meinen Freund JJ komplett überarbeitet. Erstaunlich was er daraus gemacht hat. Nicht ganz soweit mußte Chicago Blues (featuring Armin Lonsinger) in den Süden der Republik reisen, wo es mit zwei tollen Gitarren parts veredelt wurde. Mir gefällt die unterschiedliche Interpretation von ein und demselben Stück außerordentlich gut und ich hoffe euch geht es ebenso... Bis bald... Gruß Jürgen

Today, I would like to present you with some “bridging music,” consisting of just one track (Chicago Blues, written in the early 80s with our band Hydra), but with quite different interpretations. Since the idea came from me, I started to revive the piece at some point, using possibilities that we unfortunately didn't have back then. The track Chicago Blues was created in my small home studio and everything was recorded, mixed, and finalized by me. The piece Chicago Blues (Olaf Svendson Master) has traveled the furthest and was completely reworked in Spain by my friend JJ. It's amazing what he did with it. Chicago Blues (featuring Armin Lonsinger) didn't have to travel quite as far, to the south of Germany, where it was enhanced with two great guitar parts. Living in Tasmania, a small island on the southern tip of Australia, which I fondly call "the arts end of the world," is no deterrent. With technology and social platforms, the opportunities for sharing my creations are endless.

From humble beginnings in a small city in New Zealand, my musical life began as a guitarist. At the age of 13, a simple visit to a music shop to return a broken amplifier resulted in a drum kit returning home with me. Sneaking into venues to watch bands set up and soundcheck led to a chance meeting with a visiting band that took an interest in me, with an invitation to play a song on the drums with them. I was invited to watch the gig that night from the safety of the side of the stage due to being underage. I was pulled on stage and placed behind the kit during their set, playing my first live gig. My first band was in the audience, and so began a journey that took me to eventually full-time touring of New Zealand and Australia.

Hobart became my home in 1981, and for nearly two decades, I was a member of several successful bands, which included recording and touring band Reckless Hearts from 1993 to 1996. Fast-forward to 2020, and creating Ma9Na (ma-nine-nuh) as my artist’s name, I began writing, recording, and releasing my own songs featuring local, national, and international musicians to support my multi-instrumental abilities.

Drumming will always hold a special place in his heart, but he has also harbored a deep passion for writing, recording, and producing his original songs. These days, he has a home studio that allows him to create music at his leisure.

In addition to drumming, Ma9Na enjoys playing bass and guitar on his songs, and he humorously describes his keyboard skills as being like those of a one-finger typist.

Drawing inspiration from Australian rock bands such as Midnight Oil, NoiseWorks, and INXS and developing a newfound appreciation for Nightwish, Ma9Na is drawn to songs with meaningful narratives that address real-world issues rather than the typical themes of sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll.
