Everything speaks. Everything is language, consciousness, shapes, conveyance, encoded reason. We are conductors of perception and play in reality, physical orchestrators of communications channeling, bridging worlds which meet through our cognizance. Improviser = composer = improviser = composer… Our practice is exploration, duration, hold, threshold, space, choice, interaction, non interaction, dynamics, energy, body. Amounts of things. Touch. There is no turning back from the experiences and exposures which evolve the love and flow and articulation of our being and awareness. We continually curate the galleries of our mind, this dream we each are in the universe. A seance of world premiere meetings. Such is meditation too. It is beyond words, and yet we know it. How far can we go? We honor life, this opportunity of existence and healing we’re given. We use it and sing it through. Our life is cosmic synchronicity made manifest.

14-speaker live nature music sound collage meditation

Listening in a very quiet environment, or at a very quiet time, preferably with good quality headphones, at no more than a moderate volume, is very much recommended. These sounds of late summer dawn in Mallee country were widely dispersed. The original recording level was 60 dB, with a further 12 dB gain in post. Listening at a low to moderate volume will more faithfully re-present the original soundscape experience. At first light, the dawn songs of Spiny-cheeked Honeyeaters predominate, gracing the early dawn soundscape with a beautiful yet melancholy quality. Also occasional Owlet Nightjar calls (which have continued all through the night), Grey Butcherbirds, a couple of Emu 'drummings', some distant Ravens, amongst others; and, in the distance, briefly, a couple of strays that ought not to have been there at all.  Throughout, the sound of the wind rising and falling, through Mallee woodland of Eucalyptus and Casuarina trees.

「森と海がまじわるところ」

鬱蒼とした森の記憶を辿るように、レコーダーを手にし土と枯れ葉の小道を登る。
まず、その小高い森の中心と思われる場所で一度目の録音。
そして同じ場所でレコーダーのマイクを空に向け二度目の録音。
遠くに僅かに波音が聴こえた。

その音に誘われて、数日後、友人たちと森を抜け海に降り立つ。
岩場の潮溜りにハイドロフォンを落とす。
マイクを通して海中の音を聴くのはそれが初めてで、海の中から外の世界を見ているような気持ちになった。
小さな生き物たちの気配、波音と森のざわめきと
すべてがまじわるところに僕はいた。


※この録音を聴き返すうちに、10年前に三木葉苗が書いた「美の基準についての覚え書き」を思い出し読み返す。合わせて読んでももらえるといいなと思いこれを付属することにしました。

森と海 -Excerpts-

Night Listening means sitting, through the night, in a chosen location, as still and quiet as possible, often for many hours, absorbed in purely listening, while recording. This is an excerpt from a recent Night Listening. It involves three Brushtail Possums, and one Red Fox. The responses of the Possums to the barking of the Fox are very interesting. (Don't start with the volume raised to more than 50 to 60 per cent: some of the fox barks are quite close and loud.)

2023.12.28 Night Listening. Night Forest. Red Fox and Brushtail Possums. Early Summer.

This work is intended as a meditative companion-piece to an earlier work, https://soundcloud.com/hearingbeings/20211024-night-music-spring, and follows a similar structure. However, it was recorded in an entirely different location (thirty-six kilometres away).

In this piece, the auditory journey of approach towards the distant source has more intervals, and is more gradual, than in the earlier work. Listening to what may be heard along the way is as important as arrival. On this occasion, there is only one Eastern Banjo Frog in the midst of a plenitude of Spotted Marsh Frogs, along with some Brown Tree Frogs and Common Eastern Froglets.

Other than balancing gain levels, the sequence of recordings constituting this work (made during one night at one location) has not been filtered or processed in any way (with the exception only of the final two minutes).

Fixing the volume from the outset to a fairly low level, e.g., around 40 per cent, and certainly not more than 50 per cent, is recommended. What is distant and quiet will gradually become nearer and louder.

Recorded on an early spring evening in the village of Mooste in South Estonia. These are the common frogs found everywhere in Estonia, but for about 5-7 days they become really active in their calls. I was pleased to find such an active pond although they are very sensitive and take about 15 minutes to come back if they get scared.

Based in Estonia and work as a program and technical coordinator for MoKS, a non-profit artist-run center.
