Bob Berberich on drums, Barry foley on bass, Peter Bonta on piano and guitar, Tommy Hannum on pedal steel guitar, (all from the Rosslyn Mountain Boys),Mac Bogert on acoustic guitar, vocals and story.
A song about a hippy pipe dream, romance, and the short, sweet moment of success. Tommy Hannum's work is incandescent!

Lovers and Best Friends

I recorded this at Sounds Reasonable off Dupont Circle as part of a live acoustic in-house concert in 1979. I had heard the Lovin’ Spoonful play the song and loved it, so I grabbed it and ran with it. It’s just me, my lovely, wonderful and beat-up Martin D-18, and my feet playing a homemade drum my long-time friend and sound man Mike Leeper created for me. He used different woods to generate two distinct sounds, a ‘kick drum’ and a ‘snare drum.’ We had lots of versions of the thing – this was the best by far. No effects, no overdubs, just me playing solo, always my favorite adventure. Enjoy and spread it around, please.

Never Heard of Lover Who Could be Best Friends

My family spent as much of summer as we could on the Jersey shore. One year we rented a very funky cottage on Barnegat Bay. We could walk to the beach, crab and fish off the dock, go sailing and rowing in a cozy dinghy, and my brother and I began a decades-long addiction to surfing. Next door to us was a slightly run-down house with a recluse who seldom appeared, a little mysterious. This is the story of a slice of that summer, when Fred and I found out about the stories we write.
Timing  was recorded in 1977 at SRI off Dupont Circle, the host John Hall (previously with WHFS) and, for this recording, I believe, with WGTB. The band is The Mac Bogert Band (what an ego!):
