Inspired from Romanian cultural heritage, be it film, dance or musical instruments Articulat's new EP 'Folclor Abstract' is a glance back to the roots in search of a meaningful future.
Searching for inspiration within Romanian folklore, Rotterdam resident producer found Ivan Braga who was on his own pursuit of cultural heritage, experimenting with a variety of traditional instruments and rhythms from different regions of the country. Doba lu' Braga is Ivan's modern take on Romanian drum patterns performed on a traditional Moldavian drum (dobă) with an uplifting twist and arrangement for the dancefloor experience.

For the second release on Subject To Restrictions Discs' White Series, Los Pashminas from Fribourg deliver a four-track sound experience for dance floors. The complexity of the human experience has led to many theories, which tried to explain the emotional activity of our everyday experiences. In the ’60s Paul MacLean formulated the 'Triune Brain' model. This theory proposes a very simplistic organisation of our brain, which would be too easy to accept since the very notion of 'change' is difficult to give credence to. The wiring between our primary and emotional behaviour is much more complex and subject to plasticity and transformations. What if the very essence of music could follow the same path? Maybe music could take conscience of its own environment and develop its own wave, independently from the human will.
This EP is an essay in which symbolic samples are organising themselves into the genesis of a new form of conscience, a result of a survival-mode experience that pushes the music itself to create its new form. This sound journey was created during the 2020 Pandemic.

Music, that is able to in sight humans to an Atget photography. Able to transmit flashes to the firmament, to stars that wander darkling in eternal space. And yes: to some who listen a sudden physical movement might transpire, despite the fact that all was made without a particular practical value. Art for art's sake. In favor of an alternative to reality. Compellingly haunted by itself. Like stone, that awaits a random molecular movement."

At the end of 2019, just before the world would be turned on its head by the Covid pandemic, Berlin-based label R.i.O shared their first various artists compilation Risks Issues Opportunities. Since then they've gifted us solo outings from the likes of Philipp Otterbach, Benedikt Frey and Tim Toh and Chris Imler, but now they're returning to the VA format for their first release of 2022. For the second iteration they welcome eight new artists, including Airaboi, Willie Burns, Bocksrucker and Twoonky, all of whom deliver abstract and intriguing electronic compositions that colour outside of the lines.

Acoustic, no-age krautrock from Berlin releasing on Glasgow label, Phase Group. 

The next release on Phase Group unearths a truly unique project that has existed as an outlier in the Berlin underground since 2002. 

A stage decked out with xylophones, tambourines, timpani, wooden percussion, two drum kits, a cello, harmonicas, saxophones and pieces of scrap metal. Eight unassuming musicians playing repetitive, trance-inducing phrases, at times serene, fragile and dream-like and at others wild, primitive and driving. This isn’t a scene you might associate with hazy nights out in Berlin but it’s what you’d find if you ended up at a Kulku show.

Kulku's music is a hard to define blend of percussive minimalism, folk, krautrock, post-punk and no wave, almost exclusively derived from acoustic sound sources. Their debut album ‘Fahren' presents this unique sound-identity that they have been crafting for the best part of two decades. 

The A-side presents 3 tracks of percussive propulsion, minimalist xylophone motifs and repetitive drums alongside monotone organ, dramatic narration and woodwind instruments moving in and out of dissonant howls and melodic improvisation. The B-side is devoted to lighter tones, beginning with the glockenspiel minimalism of ‘Unterm Himmel’ and rounding the record out with trance inducing drone of the album’s title track which builds up into a cacophony of snare drums, dissonant accordion and melodica before fading out like dream.

Vienna's Florian Stoffelbauer is the man behind the Heap alias. He uses it sporadically to drop cultured deep techno on labels like Mechatronica and Neubau and has done for around six years now. This new long player is the first we have heard from him in almost three years but it has been worth the wait. False Hope on Canadian label Isla is slow and snaking techno with icy atmospheres and a sleek sense of futurism. It's stylish in design and heady in mood with standouts like 'Inner Peace' drawing you into a world of intrigue and mystery. The title track brings lush cosmic melodies over gentle kick patterns and somehow soothes the mind, body and soul. Nice work indeed.

DIRK DESAEVER - COLLECTED 1984 - 1989 (Cassette)

Musique Pour La Danse is thrilled to present its latest anthology, the label’s most ambitious release since it the extensive anthology of music produced by the late New Beat pioneer Ro Maron back in 2015.

This time label managers Olivier Ducret (Muriaux, CH) and Ed Isar (Paris, FR) have focused on another essential Belgian producer: Dirk Desaever, the man behind White House White, A Thunder Orchestra and Danton’s Voice. Rare and sought after, his records fetch high prices among collectors. Some of his productions under these aliases have appeared in crucial compilations such Geert Sermon’s Sound of Belgium, Minimal Wave’s Hidden Tapes as well as Walhalla’s Underground Wave, along with edits by Mick Wills for Biorythm and Marcel Dettman for Dekmantel.

What was initially supposed to be a simple reissue affair soon turned into a much wider project, as Desaever shared heaps of amazing unreleased material with the label. It seemed much more interesting to shed light on the dark (more shadowy, wicked etc.. – pour ne pas utiliser dark) side of this producer’s body of work.

After listening to noisy tape rips over and over, Ducret & Isar opted to break this release down in three formats (EP, LP distributed via NEWS and a cassette exlcusive via the label), each one with different content. They entrusted sound engineer Lorenzo Targhetta with remastering the music and it’s impressive how much he managed to polish the sound without altering the unmistakable grain of music committed to cassette tape.

THE CASSETTE (100% unreleased content)
The cassette version of Collected 1984 - 1989 is 100% unreleased, with a focus on a more vocal / new wave / synth pop / bedroom EBM aspect of Dirk Desaever's works, that kinda asked to be released on this specific format, and urged to be played on an walkman while walking in the city during sunset, or cruising on the Belgian motorway in your car stereo.

Paris-based imprint @globalwarmingrec starts the decade looking at the future, with a bass-infused Various that compiles four avant-garde club bullets from artists and friends close to the label.
The release is opened by @malcolmaudio , curator of the EP and label honcho, who gives the mood with a slomo post-rave break, where ethereal vocal samples, acid pinches and a loud reese bass are smashed by a hostile kick storm.
Then, the one-man band performer and unpredictable producer Ouai Stéphane delivers an epileptic reinterpretation of his drum and bass roots. His signature bleeping sounds and self-made vocals elements are here chopped over by a frantic pump bass and complex drum patterns. A landmark for the guy.
After what, the dark child Slowglide, previously heard on Antinote or Comic Sans Records makes here his Global Warming debut, delivering the perfect anthem for Gotham City nightclubs, merging industrial mood and codeine effect into one.
Finally, closing the whole thing, Parisian badman Jon Beige delivers a mental half-time gabber creature, where a bone-crusher rythmic section blends with thrilling industrial jams, sci-fi atmospheres and a haunting vocal, at the speed of light.
