L'incipit di questo viaggio è un suono fluido, forse lo stesso dello scorrere e scrosciare di quella cascata ninfica, o così ci piace pensare. I love experimentation. Especially when it comes to music. I hate making the same sound twice."

"Can I choose none? Haha.
Opera if I had to choose. I respect the amount of talent that an opera singer has."

"I love high fantasy novels. Endless reading, And a lot of my track names come from reading high fantasy"

SIMON SLIEKER  :: 7 quick lockdown questions  

1. Action, Drama, Romance or Documentary movie? 

Whichever one has a sweeping epic hero. Unfortunately this means I have dubious taste in cinema, lacking nuance, eschewing complexity, and constantly craving something to believe in. I’m increasingly disappointed. 

2. Coffee, Tea or Alcohol? 

At the moment tea. That’s the morning ritual. But I don’t really like tea, it’s too watery and insipid. But coffee is brutal, so I like to roll off it periodically. Hence the tea. As for alcohol, if you’d asked me last lockdown, it was all about Damned Murphy and his crazy specials, hmmm a spirit, all the fun of the mixed case of wine, may well get this six pack as well, oh and these ciders, and on the way out that shopping trolley with random bottles was so much fun; wow $1.39 for a bottle of citrus stout: bargain! Bleaugh. This time I’ve stopped altogether. Dry. So the tea has become quite the ‘high’. High tea. 

3. Sleep in or get up early 

Ah this is becoming about the contrasting lockdowns: 1 and 2. Lockdown 1 I didn’t sleep, I stayed up the whole time. Lockdown 2 I’m going to bed early and have made a surprise discovery: getting up early. Which sounds bad, like you’re being punished. But it turns out it means you’re getting enough sleep. I’ve not experienced this before so it didn’t make any sense. It’s amazing you should try it. 

4. Favourite Sunday afternoon listening album 

I don’t have one.

5. What art movement describes you the best?

Pre-Raphaelite.

6 Opera, Country, Folk or Black Death Metal

Maybe folk. But I think you’ve chosen the four exceptionally problematic and compromised genres there. Were they chosen especially for me? I’m going with folk because when I was 16 I decided to become quite good with a harmonica and I think that had something to do with folk, or Bob Dylan at least. 

7. Tell us something no one knows about you?

I don’t have a favourite listening album. Oh that cat’s out of the bag. Um, I don’t want to alarm anyone, but I think I’m starting to go bald.

Following our initial collaboration for CodeCast (@thecodecast), the excellent LD Hypno (@ldhypno) from Argentina returns for a second transatlantic deep & hypnotic techno transmission. Two hours, B2B:  Buenos Aires' LD Hypno versus London's Ben Cyan.

Filipino-American DJ and producer based in San Francisco CA. 888 was first Introduced to electronic music through the San Francisco underground techno scene. Slowly, while collaborating with friends, she honed her skills by playing at local bars and clubs. She hosts monthly events namely "Tone Exploration", creates a safe environment for new artists to openly express their musical talents and "texhno.exe", an event that highlights the unsung heroes of the Bay Area music scene. 888 plays varied sounds that range from downtempo, house, experimental to hard techno. She loves the opportunity of exploring newer genres and finds excitement in playing styles she never played before. 888 has a special affinity for industrial techno, electro and new/synth wave.

I don't watch a lot of talkies these days, but  the last thing I watched was a documentary. 'My Octopus Teacher' blew my mind and expanded my appreciation of the infinite mystery of our earth and fellow species.

One of each thanks!  Although if I could only have one for the rest of eternity it would be tea - there are so many delicious infusions.

3. Sleep in or get up early 
I used to aspire to being an early bird - but I've resigned myself to the fact that waking up will always be an excruciating exercise of personal willpower.

4. Favourite Sunday afternoon listening album 
Currently it's probably Power Spot by Jon Hassell or Holy Spring by Lawrence Pike- but it depends on what sort of afternoon I'm having. I also enjoy tuning into RRR or PBS :)

5. What art movement describes you the best?
Neo-Expressionism? I think? I'm not really across all of the sub genres of sub genres... I think that art is for everyone and that play and creation is a fundamental part of being a human animal - so perhaps we are all part of the same movement?

There are good and terrible examples in every genre, so never say never. But I'm more likely to be listening to folk or country on a regular basis.

7. Tell us something no one knows about you
I was so depressed and consumed by grief after the bushfires earlier in the year that I didn't think I would ever play music again - I didn't even want to listen to any music. It felt like the light had gone out of the world. I realised recently that somewhere during lockdown my capacity to enjoy music had crept back in, perhaps not in the same way as before, but I'm grateful to Machine for inviting me to prepare this podcast - it's been good to create something I can share with my Machine family until we meet again xxx

With a career spanning over 33 years, Andrew Till is one of few players with a stake in, not only the establishment, but the defining of electronic music in Australia. If ever the term “pioneer” was to be thrown around, it might well be thrown at Andrew Till. And it would stick.
Amidst a budding club and rave culture, hot on the heels of the halcyon summer of love, Andrew Till was amongst the first delivering the new dawn. First as DJ and event organizer, then as co-founder of Australia’s first and most influential electronic label.
Psy-Harmonics burst onto the scene in 1993 and would quickly thrust Till and partner Ollie Olsen onto the world stage, riding at the crest of a new wave of electronica that would crash far beyond our shores. For the next 16 years this label would offer up countless gems, to cement a timeless place in the worldwide pantheon of dance music.
As a dj, and repertoire manager, Andrew Till’s success marks him as elite. His legacy has earned a legion of fans the world over. Launching from hometown Melbourne, his tour schedule is constant: Tokyo, Helsinki, South Africa, Europe, USA, South East Asia, the list goes on and on.
His globetrotting takes in all corners but none more so than Japan. Harboring a particular fascination, Japan has played host with 50+ gigs from the largest festivals & nightclubs including; Ageha, Liquid Room, Womb, Velfare, Nagisa Music Festival, Space Gathering, Total Solar Eclipse festival (Amami-Oshimi) to the most intimate indoor and outdoor venues.
Andrew Till is known for being an innovator: a stylist whose sets are part conjuring act, part act of persuasion: a composite of timing and compositional balance. He mesmerizes with beautifully realized structure and broadens horizons with his call to war: the tension of being swept up in the familiar, and dropped into the unknown.
A view to the horizon and an open minded appraisal of emerging sounds has forged for Andrew Till, the respect of his peers, the endorsement of the music seeking public and continual success on the label front.
In 2009 a new wave surged. Machine Label is the new kid on the block, the techno lovechild, spawned by the club of the same name. Machine is the current driving undercurrent of Andrew Till’s techno fame. Co-owned with Simon Slieker, Machine has become the flag bearer for a procession of burgeoning new talent from Australia and abroad. Machine Club is the monthly embodiment, public outlet and testing ground, whilst Machine Label throws it out to the world.

Andrew continues to deliver forward thinking electronic music as an artist, dj, A&R, manager and mentor. His vast dedication to the development and progression of the culture that became an industry is his inspiration and motivation.
